Ok

If I could allow you to choose one of McGrath or parish to trade out at the end of the year which would it be. You can only choose 1
I would put it as a poll but have no idea how to do that and it would require me using my brain.
For me it's McGrath because his turn overs are dead set are momentum killers
Parish by a mile. He's an inside midfielder who's a list clogger

What's their definition of 1v1? Because I remember multiple occasions this season where his man has beaten him for a mark on the lead.

Unless it's making a distinction and referring to "body to body" contests only.
One-On-One Contest: A 50-50 contest that occurs after a kick, and involves only two players – a target player and a defender. Each player must have a reasonable chance to win the ball in order for a one-on-one to be recorded. Winning and losing percentages refer to how often a player wins the ball or concedes a possession to his opponent. A neutral result is recorded when the ball is spoiled or results in a stoppage.

It’s a bit rubbery though. CD isn’t exactly open source and still relies on human decisions

Getting beat on the lead probably should be graded as a loss, you lost your position and you allowed your opponent the ball. Or a stat that breaks down the types of contest/battles that occur between forward and defender to allow any form of analysis.

When you look at your description, a neutral result is when the ball is spoiled.
If you are beat on the lead it's not a loss.
If you wrestle off an opponent and cut off the kick it's credited as a win.
So even by their metrics if you are beaten off the mark, recover and spoil it's still only a neutral result not a win for the defender, but they never get counted as losses?

That is if you got beaten off the mark of course. Pressure up the ground is generally a factor on that front. Stats are stats. The are never really perfect.

Yep Agreed there.
I think that is kinda my point when we talk about some of our players on this board, using the two hot topics of Parish and McGrath as examples.

A common comment is to throw a counting stat back as evidence of a good game or performance.
There is more to it than that.
We (footy public we) need to agree that whilst stats are an important aid they are so flawed they are not some silver bullet to an argument.

The stats that would be most relevant for McGrath are:
  • turnovers into opposition scores
  • forward kick retention rate
  • handballs resulting in next possession turnover (someone elses problem).
The problem with listing normals stats are that they dont shoe the consistent disposal issues that dont impact his disposal efficiency %.
  • His premature bounce and run that result in panic long kicks to 50/50s at best (multiple times a game)
  • His dodgy short kicking that falls two meters short on the bounce, but puts the next player under pressure

Leaving aside the histrionics for a moment, he’d be in the best 22 of any AFL side. While he’s not what you want from pick 1 in the draft he’s far from a terrible player.

6 years seems far too long for a contract for a player of his calibre but I think his flaws will fade into the background as the defensive unit is rebuilt and we are less reliant on him to counterattack.

Don’t know about at Brisbane, Collingwood and Geelong.

Could McGrath play a role as a pressure forward/tagger, he takes the oppositions best half back every week

Or as a high half forward like Shaun Mannaugh?
Would be an interesting move. At least he wouldn’t be turning it over in D50 for a while

Could see him getting caught a mile away. Opposition know he runs himself into trouble. Should have cleared it straight off the boot.

I've wanted him in this role for years. Gets to do what he does best without having his terrible disposal hurt us as much.

Quality commentary as usual from you.
I said we should trade him when he was playing a few good games and what happened? dodo signed him to 6yrs and there’s been SFA from him since. Beyond being a very average footballer he lacks competitiveness

Right. All I said was he’s been fine tonight but spout off I guess.

Runs back into traffic and almost responsible for a red time goal. The dude has rocks for brains.
As I said in the game thread he clearly had nothing out the far side. His choice was to bomb it to nobody or step back inside to find an option.

The resultant kick was shocking off the side of his boot but his decision making was perfectly fine.
