Even great kicks at goal like Gunston have had the yips this year.

Even Watts missed a sitter on the weekend.

Hoges isn't at their level but he's having a rough patch, his technique is actually pretty sound inside 45 - aim straight, run straight, leg swings straight.

But when you're low on confidence you tend to misjudge the angle, or overthink where you should be aiming ... or simply just lose concentration because you're worried you'll miss.

Disagree his technique is sound - his ball drop is awful.

Isn't ball-drop a big component of goal-kicking technique?

Brian Taylor who works as a coach always says this .. the average conversion in the NRL is close to 80% while the AFL is 65
How come there's a 15% difference? Because the NRL place kicks so there's no room for error before the point of contact
The photos of hogan as he is just about to drop the ball and he's holding it on a 45 are horrific, he has no room for error if he isn't high on confidence

Maybe he should try Plugger's technique of leaning over like a hunchback as you walk in to reduce the drop distance (and hence the margin of error)

Its no coincidence plugger was one of the best set shots of all time

It looks ugly but seems to work for him when his confidence is up.
Technique definitely needs work, he still spins the pill 5 or 6 steps before kicking it.

On a side note, saw footage of Joe Daniher standing at 90 degrees to the goal to snap a set shot directly in front 35m out on the weekend. Now THAT is lacking confidence.

I know it was ugly but he kicked the goal. If Daniher starts converting he will be a beast.

But what is that saying if a full forward sets up to snap goals from directly in front?
If he can't kick drop punts from there, he has a serious issue.

Really liked his game yesterday. Took a lot of contested grabs, worked hard around the ground, his attitude was good I thought, if not for his s**t goal kicking would have had an awesome day.

On his goal kicking, it has to be a mental thing. He showed last year he can kick goals from anywhere in the 50. As Darthsidusfan said above The Ox may be having the last laugh, if laughing at your former football club's current and future FF and potential star because he is missing goals is something worth laughing at.

I seem to think though a former legend of the club potting said clubs 20 year old FF 's kicking technique and literally devaluing his potential output because of it may have played on Hogan's young mind and in hindsight was a completely stupid thing to do.

He's an interesting character, so many Melbourne's fans have posted how they thought he had a terrible game.

A lot of the time his hard work around the ground goes unnoticed, only his work close to goal gets discussed

I thought his workrate was excellent and he marked the ball very well. His conversion was poor though and he missed at crucial times (So did Watts, but Watts has a lot of credit in the bank in 2016) which really hurt us.

What's wrong with it? Ball is straight, low enough to his foot.

Half the time he doesn't run straight at the target so he can kick across the ball, he also doesn't drop the ball straight consistently. I defended him at the time of Schwartzs comments because his record was quite good, but his kicking has been a lot worse this year.

When he's further out than 45 he does run across, otherwise he's straight.

He drops the ball fine inside 45, he just has the yips.

Hogan did a very similar thing in Round 6 when we played St Kilda, and he kicked 7.1 that day!

He doesn't drop it fine though, he does when he's confident but he holds it sideways as soon as that drops and that's a problem
Hogan's kicking at 47% for this whole season, that's not good enough at all and when you've got someone like Jason Dunstall telling you its a flawed technique you have to listen

Caroline Wilson said something strange on footy classified, she said the melbourne people she talks to are at their wits end with Hogan. Apparently he goes back to Perth and thinks he might head home and then the boys go ok and he tells the club he's gonna stay and it's keeps flip flopping
Might explain why there's conflicting reports because he doesn't even know what he's doing

What is it with these idiot forwards like Hogan and Daniher? Why don't they seek out the best in the game and get some advice? I'm sure Dunstall, Carey, Lloyd, etc. are all available for short term stints of coaching. It would be worth investing some money to get the best available. They are both abysmal kicks for the money and hype they receive.

Flip flopping is almost worse than leaving. It stops the team from making longer term plans. This, combined with his kicking yips, paints the picture of a guy who is mentally fragile. Might be a long term challenge to keep him on an even keel.
