#1 pick worth

Pick #1 doesn't have a locked success rate. The reason it's so valuable is because it gives whichever club has it the priority in choosing whoever they want & is guaranteed to be there. IIRC, West Coast were demanding pick 1 from Carlton in the Judd trade, but Carlton were dead-set keen on Kreuzer and weren't prepared to give him up even for Judd, so they traded pick 3 & Kennedy instead.

That isn't to say GWS won't trade it away. While I have no doubt they want Boyd, they'll trade pick 1 + their first round compo pick + Giles for Nic Naitanui in a heartbeat.

True, but when was the last time the #1 pick was used for someone other than the draftee who is considered the most talented regardless of needs? Clubs are too afraid.

And in hindsight, Carlton should have given up Kreuzer instead of Kennedy, #3.

We would have taken Cotchin. In fairness to Carlton, Kreuzer has been injured so we haven't seen the best of him.

Really? I would. One of the most talented key forwards I have seen

He's not a Buddy Franklin or a Naitanui type player. Probably closer to Josh Kennedy (WCE) than those guys. Good but not elite.

Cameron has 54 goals from 25 games playing for a rabble. If that doesn't show his potential to be elite I don't know what does. It took JJK almost 50 games across his first 5 seasons to reach the same number.

2 goals a game is not elite. Until such time he proves himself elite, he isn't elite.

John Coleman kicked 100 goals in his 1st season, 21 games. 12 in his 1st game.

Not sure if the article refers to AFL only or didnt happen to search records more thoroughly, But Coleman will never be matched , Period. Calling him elite is only selling him short, he is goal kicking.

But Cameron will be a future Coleman medalist provided he gets enough feed and injury doesnt get in the way of his progress.

Cameron will certainly be a gun, but that article is pretty selective picking out only Lockett, Grant and Ablett Snr to have kicked more than 44 goals in first 22 games..

Tony Modra kicked his 102nd goal in his 22nd AFL game...

I'm going to assume that there must've been plenty of others too that had a better record...

Cameron is a jet. Get poor delivery and the best back each week.

Quality KPPs are so hard to find, he has played 1.5 season and won a rising star. Unless there is a Riewoldt level #1 player in the draft I would be taking Cameron over the number 1 pick every day of the week.

How many #1 draft picks have been traded and how many top 5 picks have been traded in the past 5 years since trading and drafting has become an exact science?

Only Gold Coast trading Pick 5 and other picks for Jared Brennan and Pick 10 in 2010 (I would argue that Melbourne and Gold Coast last year and Gold Coast the year before didn't count as they still got junior prospects)

But to counter that argument, how many players worthy of those top 5 picks are put up for trade, very rarely and only when a player wants out, such as Chris Judd.

I think Cameron and NicNat are worth more than the number 1 pick, they are pretty much exactly what you are hoping to get at best from the number 1 pick.

FWIW Modra debuted at 23, Cameron at 18.

Not sure where they were going with the 22 game, 44 goal stat though.

Podsiadly kicked 49 goals in his 19 game debut season...
