#1 pick worth

FWIW Modra debuted at 23, Cameron at 18.

Not sure where they were going with the 22 game, 44 goal stat though.

Podsiadly kicked 49 goals in his 19 game debut season...

Maybe they forgot to mention something about being an 18 year old in the article..

hack journalists... you know the afl.com.au site is a joke when half the time the stats and figures of things they write are wrong...

I mean, after Lynch kicked 10 goals against GWS the other week, they kept writing that it was the first 10 goal haul kicked by a Crow since Modra in 1993...

He kicked 13 against Carlton in 1994...

I mean, it's a small point, but you have to think they get this shit wrong all time....

It would have to be someone like Ablett, Franklin, Naitanui, etc. hypothetically.

Those players now, or those players as unproven 18 year olds? Ablett went as a F/S pick and from my recollections was not in contention to go at #1 anyway, Franklin went at 5 and Naitanui at 2 (essentially 1, Melbourne don't count).

Looking at 2004 Franklin is top 5 in the comp, Deledio and Griffen are AA quality and Roughead is a very good player, and Tambling was the bust. People umm and ahh about players like that being worthy of picks, but only one player in that list would the club be happy to get the pick they used back for the player in a trade, despite each player being 25/26.

The Hawks currently sit atop the ladder. If given pick 1 I would happily hand it over to get Franklin or Rioli to West Coast, and I'd think about Birchall. The rest either aren't worth it as players or aren't in the right age bracket. Anyone who thinks they'd definitely get better than Mitchell or Hodge from an unproven 18 year old is delusional, but you wouldn't trade the #1 pick for a 30 year old. Ever.

The Giants currently sit bottom. I'd give them pick 1 for Coniglio, and I'd think about Ward, Shiel and Greene. I haven't seen enough of their 2012 recruits to make a call and I have no interest in Cameron/Patton because my team has two good key forwards that have plenty of footy left.

The easiest way to do this is have a look at your own team and decide who you WOULDN'T give up for the Number 1 pick.

At Collingwood:
Wouldn't trade Pendlebury, still only 25 and arguably the 2nd best mid in the comp after Ablett.
At the start of the year I would have said Dayne Beams I also wouldn't trade, 23 y/o coming off a season where he was a top 10 player in the league... after a year of injuries who knows now?

I'd have a think about Cloke and Reid, as AA CHB/CHF are hard to find but then I'd end up trading them for the number 1 pick.

Anyone else on our list I'd give up in a heartbeat.

So Pendlebury and maybe Beams off limits, I'd expect most other clubs would only have 1-2 players they'd be worth more than pick 1.

I am not saying Collingwood would do it but if I were GWS I would at least ask about the prospect of trading pick 1 for Ben Reid. At the very least it would cause Collingwood to think about it as it is not an outlandish trade proposal.

Pies would be insane to do that. Ben Reid is one of the best defenders in the competition and is essential to their structure.

The only players GWS would be interested in trading their #1 pick for would be:

Nic Naitanui
Trent Cotchin
Patrick Dangerfield
Scott Pendlebury
Joel Selwood
Jack Darling
Harley Bennell
Jack Martin
Jaeger O'Meara
Jesse Hogan
Ben Reid
Tom Liberatore
Daniel Hannebery
Tex Walker
Nat Fyfe
Rory Sloane
Daniel Talia
Jake Carlisle
Chad Wingard

Any team that doesn't have one of these players won't be getting the #1 pick.

Looks like GWS will have to use its No 1 pick in the draft.

Seriously, GWS complaining no-one will trade with them when they have always demanded clubs pay overs for their draft picks. Lunacy. They have themselves to blame.

Why would you give up a proven young champion such as Fyfe for a No 1 pick?

Imagine making a team out of those players. I nearly reckon a best 22 out of those players, would beat a best 22 of the rest of the competition in a game.

The Crows would love that pick to get Aish.

Hard to see how though. I think Dangerfield, Crouch and Walker are the only completely off limit players - but we'd struggle to lose Talia after losing so many talls recently, and Sloane is the ultimate team man.

Apparently this is a done deal if they don't land Buddy - j riewoldt for number 1 pick, and either Tyson or Adams plus some swapping of picks depending on ladder position.

Wouldn't happen... he's not a draw card like Buddy. Other than that, we are after kpd or ruck.

Pick 1 is going to be on the trade table this year

I think GWS should go for the best key defender they can get with pick 1.
Gws get - Jordan roughead, Shaun Higgins, pick 5,
Dogs get - Pick 1, Taylor Adams.

Gws get their blue chip key defender with 10 years ahead of him. Higgins is a buy-low throw in for them. If his foot comes good, he improves them immediately. They can pick up sheed or dunstan at pick 5 to replace Adams.

Dogs get the key forward they need in Boyd, and another quality young mid in Adams. Losing roughead would hurt. No obvious replacement on the list. Perhaps a second trade for Mitch brown, or develop fletcher Roberts as a key back.

And take out Jeremy Cameron. Very good player but no way would I take him over the #1 pick.
Really? Are you kidding? The entire reason for wanting the number 1 pick is the HOPE that you draft a player like Cameron. Why would you turn that down for a shot at a guy who could be the next Jack Watts? It's not like Cameron's in his mid 20s, he's still only 19/20.

There won't be too many key forwards that come along in the next few years as good as Cameron.

At Essendon the only player I wouldn't give up would be Carlisle.

Hurley and co are all very good, but with the number one pick the holes they would leave could be more than plugged.

Carlisle on the other hand, Untouchable.

Didn't GWS bid their #1 pick for Daniher in last year's F/S meeting? They'd probably trade it for him as well, even though he's young.

The only guy that would get us pick 1 is Hannerbury a you'd be game to trade him

Oh they did, did they? I didn't include any first year players on the list, because well, they're first year players and you'd think they'd be untouchable anyway.

Having said that, I'd sell my soul before I saw Joe Daniher traded to GWS for the #1 pick.

Chris Judd could not get the #1 pick. I would not trade the next Jaeger O'Meara or a Trent Cotchin for JC. Everyone's a champ compared to Jack Watts.
