Callum Mills

Callum Mills is one of the best young players in the AFL. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2016 AFL Rising Star award and was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in three of his four eligible years. Mills is a small defender with uncompromising courage who’s also capable of shifting through the midfield. The New South Welshman was elevated to Sydney’s leadership group during the 2018 pre-season at the age of just 21, and he’s now a member of a five-man leadership panel alongside co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Lance Franklin.

DOB: 02 April 1997
DEBUT: 2016
DRAFT: #3, 2015 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: North Shore (NSW)

I didn’t bump the thread to shit on the bloke, just think he isn’t competing against much to be skipper, in actually fact there’s a lack of leadership around the captain.

Look at Maxfield good skipper, seemingly a great skipper, when he had to go there were what 7 guys who could step in.

We used an ex skipper last year, rotated Heeney and Rowbottom through this year who seemed a bit meh.

I'll take John Longmire's words about the club realising from very early days that Mills was a potential future leader.

I amfound it partly amusing and definitely assuring that Longmire mentioned that Mills was questing him on his game plan as a 15 year old!

Longmire walked out of that meeting and told Andrew Ireland that Mills will captain our club one day.

Surely these are clear signs of a thinker and leader.
And told Horse to piss off from the bench , as he gives the players the shits

I think if we are going to really be a contender next year, Mills needs to go back to the midfield and be our Josh Dunkley. He's the defensively-minded, clearance player who can still be good with the ball in hand but that offers the Brisbane midfield a dimension that none of their other players provide. Mills can do that if back to 100% fitness. He's big enough to take on the best midfielders and he has the range of skills to help all the rest (Heeney, Warner, Errol) be their best.

I'd be gearing him up for a massive off-season, giving him some proper midfield minutes in the final few games of this year, and having him be as fit as possible to take on a big role as our midfield general next year alongside Heeney and Warner largely as our CBA trio of choice. Rowbottom can play more forward, Jordon off a wing.

There's a real question about who plays down back in Mills' absence and that's where I think we've got to properly test the young guys in Snell and Edwards as early as possible in 2025 - or even late this year with Snell. They've got to be given responsibility to test whether they can flourish because if one of them can take on a real defensive role, it might open up McCartin to become more of a Harris Andrews/Jacob Weitering type of interceptor who can control the back half rather than have to lock down the best forward week in week out.

Snell and Edwards are defensive talls , not a medium

IMO what we'd lose by Mills leaving the defence is less about the player he matches up on and more the role he plays of marshalling the defence and intercepting. So if I'm honest I don't really care that we'd be replacing a nominal medium defender with a taller player because I think the role of marshalling/intercepting could be taken up by McCartin and then the replacement tall takes over McCartin's lockdown role alongside Melican. This is keeping in mind that I think we need to move past Rampe who is a player who can play on medium types that Mills does.

Good again tonight
Good again against quality opposition too, apart from last 5mins our defence was immense.

Grundy, J-Mac going off meant we were without them but also down 2 rotations in last 10mins.

Was clean and his decision making under pressure is seriously underrated, almost always picks the best option. This is what we were lacking first half of the year.

I think Mills is important in the midfield. But if you somehow add a player /rejuvenate Adams 4 years/ Sheldrick goes up another level etc then Mills could stay back?

I prefer him kicking in to Blakey

Mills kick in to Blakey who can push us to the centre would be ideal. But neither of them are good deep

Errol will kick right and is working hard on it , he want's to be the best he can

Are you Errol's personal trainer? you seem to know how hard he is working .

Are you suggesting Mcveigh didn't work hard and didn't want to be the best he could be?

Errol couldn't go right Saturday, better get him working harder 😂

Heeney is now the benchmark on how you go to another level and Errol has to get better
