Callum Mills

Callum Mills is one of the best young players in the AFL. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2016 AFL Rising Star award and was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in three of his four eligible years. Mills is a small defender with uncompromising courage who’s also capable of shifting through the midfield. The New South Welshman was elevated to Sydney’s leadership group during the 2018 pre-season at the age of just 21, and he’s now a member of a five-man leadership panel alongside co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Lance Franklin.

RECRUITED FROM: North Shore (NSW)

Heeney is now the benchmark on how you go to another level and Errol has to get better

Agree.

Errol could leave his non preferred and be a star - he is a star now.

He could just go up another level as crazy as that sounds if he can reliably hit the right foot.

I do think it is worth reminding people that Mills AA year was as a full time mid. Having him being able to be on ball is only a good thing. Or even as a winger so he can get back a bit more

There were a couple of games he went into the defence during that season. Frankly, if he is the gun mid, we should be finding others to play the last line of defence role and stop asking him to do it. Let's not forget, the 2021 surge of the Swans came with Mills becoming a full time midfield, he was selected in the AA 40 squad and if it wasn't for his Achilles, he probably would have gotten the AA selection a year earlier.

Hope he has a good injury-free preseason and walks straight into the midfield group; he belongs there.

What’s the early read on where Mills will play next year ? I have my doubts about him as a gun mid (even in 2022) but wish he could become a 2 way running contested bull.

Is he healthy / strong enough for this?

Has the club made a call which position he plays yet ?

Bonz any thoughts ?

Based on our last few games it seems like Cox is more likely to move Gulden into the middle than Mills.

But I absolutely want to see if Mills can recapture some of that 2022 form when he gave us what Dunkley has given the Lions the past few years.

Not sure (don't have someone directly involved with our coaching staff).

It was mentioned in the media earlier this year they wanted to play him as a midfielder in the pre-season or https://www.afl.com.au/news/1266665...r-dean-cox-confirms-captain-callum-mills-role

But obviously he had a few injuries and didn't get the required fitness levels this season.

I assume he probably wants to do the same thing again, and from what I am aware mills will be there for the start of pre-season training.

Probably not the best news for Gus Sheldrick given JJ has an ability to play as a forward

IMO it shouldn't be an either/or thing.

Brisbane had four midfielders in the top 40 of the competition for clearances this year. We had one. Our best was our ruckman. We shouldn't be too fussy about which ball-winning hard nut we want in there.

We have to get the midfield back to being about things that win you the midfield battle - clearances, contested ball, tackles, pressure.

I want our main midfield rotation next year to be Heeney, Rowbottom, Mills and Sheldrick.

Warner rotating in with Heeney as that dangerous mid/forward hybrid. Gulden continue to be drip-fed inside minutes but predominantly stay on the outside. Jordon a break-glass option from half forward if a mid is getting off the chain.
