Excellent that they are resting Watson and Johnson. I honestly couldn't give a damn whether the Aussies win this lot of one dayers or not.

I wish they'd rest Michael Clarke and Nathan Hauritz permanently.

Hauritz's performances in ODI's are more than fair. Clarke however eats up balls and the strike like an old Mark Taylor.

Where's Hilfy?

First good decision the selectors have made for ages.

1) He ain't that good with the white ball - see list A record.

2) Everytime they pick him in one dayers he breaks down.

Save him for the tests, give some younger guys a go in the one dayers. Perfect.

Well done selectors :thumbsu::eek:

I would think that G.Bailey would be pretty close of getting a game if he can have a good season this year hopefully a call up wont be to far away.

Love the look of this squad. Might as well rest Hussey and play Smith at 5 or 6. White should hold down his spot well, rated very highly as a leader and hopefully he has a good series.

Ferguson, McKay, Warner all good selections. :)

That's basically the lineup I'd go in with. If Hauritz is picked, it weakens the case for Smith, and David Warner might get a go at 7. Personally I reckon Smith is a better ODI bowler than Hauritz, but Hauritz is more experienced, more of a known factor, and perhaps a little less prone to copping stick. I also think that the best possible thing for Smith's development as a cricketer is to play ODIs and T20s, and play FC cricket for NSW for another season or so.

If the selectors felt our batting was a bit lacking with Smith at 7, they could opt for Hopes at 8 instead of Hauritz, as a bit of backup (though Hauritz can swing a bat, so it's not too vital), and Smith bowls ten overs of spin.

Starc could slot in at 8 or 9, but I would have Pattinson and Hopes/Hauritz ahead of him

White is underrated as a test player/bastmen in the long version of the game.
Definitley someone I'd consider picking, still youngish.

With that top 3, it would be a struggle to reach 200 off 50 overs.

Go for it I'd say. I have no qualms about losing this series. Especially if Clarke is captain.

No, he is supremely overrated as a batsman in the longest form of the game. His record in the Sheffield Shield is shite. His record in Tests is shite. His County record, playing Div 2, pads out his FC stats. He's just not a test batsman. Maybe he'll undergo a Symonds-style transformation and make it as a Test batsman, but until then, until he starts performing at a consistently high level in FC cricket, he shouldn't be anywhere near the Test team.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but it's an oddly balanced squad. I don't really like Warner much as an opener in the OD format though, and he's a fringe ODI player at best, so there weren't many options.

He just has trouble transitioning between tempo batting and slogging. He isn't ready yet, but in a few years when he's 29 or so I could see him making a case for himself. That'll come with maturity. Fantastic leader, made captain of the Vic side at a young age. If he was handier with the ball there would be a bigger case to mount for him.

The problem for White is the Australian ODI teams spend so much time playing during our summer he doesnt get many chances to play first class cricket so his recent seasons where he averaged 48, 58 and 50 dont get noticed at all

I love the myth he doesnt make first class runs when you check out his stats :)

As for his test performances, yeah didnt do so great, he was picked at no8, not as a batsman and in a poor performance by the whole side was never going to make big runs at no8, but still an average of 30 is pretty good for a no8 and if Marcus North survives untill the end of the Ashes then he might have a higher average than North!

White's FC stats for Victoria

01/02 3 innings 2 not outs 12 runs
02/03 8 innings 0 not outs 144 runs
03/04 13 innings 1 not outs 241 runs
04/05 16 innings 1 not outs 465 runs 1 ton
05/06 18 innings 2 not outs 482 runs
06/07 12 innings 1 not out 437 runs 1 ton
07/08 17 innings 2 not out 748 runs 1 ton
08/09 8 innings 0 not outs 462 runs 2 tons
09/10 7 innings 2 not outs 230 runs

His stats for Somerset were

2006 22 innings 2 not outs 1190 runs 5 tons
2007 19 innings 4 not outs 1083 runs 5 tons

Put that together sometime last summer so 09/10 may be missing some stuff.

The fact was he was picked as a spinner when he holds just as much if not more value as a batsmen. Was used in the wrong role, which was his downfall especially when the teams performance was average.

No coincidence that his best performances hvae been in Div 2 County cricket. His average in Sheffield Shield cricket, based on those stats, is 35.4. Those aren't the performances of a Test batsman.
