#19 - An Idea....

ok, so, don't hate me, but over the years, there is one thing I really like that the Crows have done......

(obviously it's a VERY short list to chose from)


However, since Andrew Mcleod retired (and man, what a player he was. Incredible), only indigenous players have donned the 23 for that football club. I would LOVE to see us do the same for our #19, and Eddie.

Yeah, I feel the same way but I guess I'd change my mind if indigenous players felt it was a badge of honour. I'd rather our indigenous players just be thought of as players who happen to be indigenous. We have 4 right now (IIRC) and they are all so different in the way they play so they don't even have that style in common.

It does feels a little like segregation, even though done for the right reason. I thought that when I realised what Adelaide are doing with 23. I'd like to see a whole list of names on a locker and not be reminded of race as the first port of call

I probably should add that there were only 2 indigenous players who played for Adelaide before McLeod, and they played 11 games and 4 games respectively.

For Carlton, Syd Jackson was a champion and wore #5. To dedicate #19 to indigenous players going forward, would be a bit of a slap in the face to Syd.

I think we have Eddie Betts present the 19 jumper towards any indigenous occupant post-retirement._.. Or present the jumper to any subsequent wearer of the number 19 in perpetuity._.. And that way you can make the number special and even get Eddie's input into who should be presented with the number 19

I've noticed it and like it. It's a cool tradition to keep going and I'd be keen for us to continue it. Adds some indigenous tradition to the club on field and it would be a proud moment for an indigenous player coming in to follow on Eds legacy - obviously they could choose not too if they wish, no one is beholden to anything.

Hopefully we look after Ed a bit better post career than the Crows allegedly have Andrew, however.

Agree with thylacine60 and The Old Dark Navy's

I understand the reasoning why you'd do something like that.

But listen to their fight. Listen to the entire argument behind Black Lives Matter.

They're not asking to be treated better than anyone else. They're asking to be treated as equals.

You don't do that by continuing segregation and differentiating between indigenous and otherwise.


To me there is no difference between the #19 of Betts and the #6 of Kade Simpson. Both extraordinary contributors to the Carlton Football Club in their own right.

Players already have a a tradition of handing down their guernsey number to a future star. Who Eddie chooses to hand the 19 down to is his decision, indigenous or otherwise, small forward or otherwise, and his reasoning should be respected.
