One of those nights - kids are asleep, the missus is out, nowt on the box, what to do?

The 98 GF video - airing number 138!

Some observations......

- How good was Benny Hart's first half? Never beaten by Sholl in all the 1-on-1 isolations that North created, and single handedly denied North 3 goals through smothers or last ditch tackles.
- We crumbed so well in that second half. Really, the marking forwards were as dysfunctional then as they are now (Robran, Pittman and Marsh 5 marks between them as key forwards), but McLeod, Johnson, James, Koster, Vardy, even Thiessen were always getting front and square. We don't do that nearly as well now.
- Brett James was the most underrated player we ever had. Useful up forward in the first half, cool as ice down back in the second.
- Darren Jarman was a dead set freak. If you ever get a chance to get on the turf at the MCG, it's worth it just to stand in the pocket he nailed that goal from the boundary line from in the first quarter.
- It's funny how much flak (and 4 weeks) Michael Long got over his attack on Troy Simmonds in the 2000 GF, but what David King did to Nigel Smart was identical.
- It's great to see ruckman have the option to take clean possession. That new interpretation is awful.

but the TRUE... REAL highlight is ME :p

im on that video about 3-4 times, including one of a close up of me going Go Crows in the 3rd 1/4! one of the best days of my life.... sitting there on the boundary line cheering my heart out for the 2nd year in a row! was amazing to have been to 2 GFs by the time i was 14!

At the game i thought Ben Hart deserved Norm, for me that day, until i watched the video he was best on ground!

The Caveman on Carey was pretty important too...the big fella got away a couple of times but Caven's run from defense set up a lot of attacks.
Each time I watch the game I nearly wet my pants giggling at Cory McKernan in the second QTR.
watch for my wife and I in the crowd after smarty's goal in the last QTR...we're the ones in the crows stuff going berserk !!.. :o .seriously - we got our heads on in the official video !! :D

My girlfirend and I missed them both, we were working in London. Our arrival back on Australian shores coincides with the AFC's downward spiral. Needless to say our Crow Supporting friends have offered to give us fully paid one way flights back to the UK.

:p

nar nar... im just a very young kid... look very very young much younger than my 13! still cant believe it though everytime i watch the video and im on there! bit like in 1993 when Dean Jones hit a 6 at adelaide oval and i was on tv because i nearly caught it!

Ah, good times. I was in American for the 97 GF, we hired a really expensive room because it was the only hotel with ESPN2 and then they delayed it for ages and it eventually started about 11/12. Was a very happy 12 yr old at 2 AM that morning.
I think I've also got it on tape somewhere, although I wish I had the prelim as well, is there anywhere I can pick that up?

there is a 97 finals 3 pack out

wins against W Coast/Geelong/Footscray

always handy for those rainy sunday arvos !

Is there a 4 pack with the GF?

nope

the GF comes separate with the WEG Crow on the front.

there is also a 3 pack for '98

Sydney Semi win
Bulldogs Prelim sherlacking

and because of the Melbourne Qualifying loss they throw in the Showdown late in the year when we won by 70 or 80 points. (always good for a laugh).

I'm a bit of a sucker for this stuff - I reckon I've got just about every Crow VHS/DVD on the market !! :o

I burnt a copy of the '98 grand final for a mate of mine last weekend... when I gave it to him, this other guy there asked if we were watching paint dry on it.

Kind of funny I guess, I didn't think so at the time though. :p

We really should put these great Grand Finals behind us, a past glory isn't the same as present glory.

Plus the 97 Grand Final was a lot better than the 98 one.

Why ???

as football supporters I think we should be greatful to be able to reminisce about past successes - I know I probably watch both GFs about once a year - to relive the success - also to remind myself of the personnel we had - and how the game has changed slightly.
I sure would prefer to be in our position than some others......

Melbourne - last win 1964 - black and white shyte VHS
South Melbourne - last win 1933....maybe you could get a half decent wireless recording
Geelong - 1963....see Melbourne
St Kilda - 1966....see Melbourne
Footscray...- 1954
Fitzroy....1954.

I'll enjoy watching my team have success past and present - and be greatful I was there at the MCG to see it. Supporters our age weren't even born when their team last won a flag...............don't take it for granted

Actually 97 I reckon was the best as we came in complete Underdogs and told we're without a hope, were star players emerge and the first would never be the same as any other.

It just seems so long ago now to still be watching them.

Plus 98 is amazing so simular to 97, Come in as Underdogs, Modra didn't play, Jarman gets goal of the day, Mcleod normsmith medal.

Only thing hurts now watching the 98 GF is suffering a complete premiership hang-over the year after, 99 was one season that should of never of happened.

Still love to see the day when Ricciuto and Neil Craig hold up the cup, and not Bickley and Blightly.

I must admit I only just watched the 97 gf about 2 weeks ago, I love watching them every now and again, brings back some great memories.
I think my favourite one was 97 however, but Im really not fussy :D

Hang-Over and Injuries, I recall we just lost Shaun Rehn, and 2 players retired at the end of 99, never to be seen on the small-screen again

:(
