One of those nights - kids are asleep, the missus is out, nowt on the box, what to do?
The 98 GF video - airing number 138!
Some observations......
- How good was Benny Hart's first half? Never beaten by Sholl in all the 1-on-1 isolations that North created, and single handedly denied North 3 goals through smothers or last ditch tackles.
- We crumbed so well in that second half. Really, the marking forwards were as dysfunctional then as they are now (Robran, Pittman and Marsh 5 marks between them as key forwards), but McLeod, Johnson, James, Koster, Vardy, even Thiessen were always getting front and square. We don't do that nearly as well now.
- Brett James was the most underrated player we ever had. Useful up forward in the first half, cool as ice down back in the second.
- Darren Jarman was a dead set freak. If you ever get a chance to get on the turf at the MCG, it's worth it just to stand in the pocket he nailed that goal from the boundary line from in the first quarter.
- It's funny how much flak (and 4 weeks) Michael Long got over his attack on Troy Simmonds in the 2000 GF, but what David King did to Nigel Smart was identical.
- It's great to see ruckman have the option to take clean possession. That new interpretation is awful.
