I was just going through the draft over the last 10 years and being a young bloke just wondering why Essendons first pick in the 1999 Draft wasnt til pick 40 which was David Hille?? Were we penalised for something??

Excluded from the first 2 rounds for salary cap breaches between 1992 to 1996.

shows that all that talk about carlton only being the basket case that they were because of their missed draft picks being rubbish.

Essendon lost a late first rounder and a late second rounder. We lost picks 1 & 2 in 2002. Picks 5 & 21 in 2003. How can you compare the two punishments?

Cos we were just over, and were helpful with the AFL investigators. Carlton continued to hide their deception blew the salary cap away.

so you lost brendan goddard and daniel wells, and brock mclean and alex gilmore. only brock would've made a major difference in my opinion, maybe goddard to a certain extent.
history shows that top picks aren't the be-all-and-end-all of making a club, and if three first-round picks, as well as a second-round pick (which essendon lost both of in 99) is what that carlton lost out on, then surely they should have put more time and money into scouting a few diamonds in the rough.
not a good enough excuse for their insipid performances between 2002-2007/8 if you ask me. poor recruiting, and a stupid decision to recruit recycled players in 2003 are the reason.

How can you assume this? With pick 1 and 2, Carlton could have scored players like Steven Salopek and Andrew Mackie, or even Hamish McIntosh. You cant say for sure that Goddard and Wells would have been picks 1 and 2 when it was a different team that used the draft picks.

Goddard would have been one of their picks. They rate him highly apparently.

Wasn't he a Carlton supporter? and if I remember correctly the Blues were creaming their pants over him. IMO they would have taken somebody different with pick 2 though being that they would have got a midfeilder with pick 1, maybe big Hamish M

The punishments are uneven for the same type of salary cap breach.
The reason they are different was Essendon put their hand up early and pleaded guilty while the Blues admitted nothing for a good deal longer .

I think most clubs were over the salaray cap during that period. Essendon were over the cap by only a relatively small amount. Carlton were over the cap by a long way. So as well as cheating the cap by a big amount they continued to deny doing so until they couldnt hide it any more.

None of those players you mentioned would have had any impact, Mackie is good in a great side, much like a Blumfield, Caracella or Heffernan type, Salopek must be up there for the most uncontested possession percentage, I don't think I've ever seen him get a hardball get... McIntosh meh! Had one good year, done ok this year, wouldn't have had a big impact.

Also, say Carlton did get those players and they did madk an impact, they wouldn't have got Gibbs, Kruezer etc. to set themselves up for a bright and sustained future which I believe they will have!

It was pretty common knowledge amongst those working in the recruting world that Goddard was going to be the number one pick in his year.

Carlton were absolutely r*ped by the AFL in terms of the penalties imposed on them.

It had a pretty big effect on Essendon and we only missed two rounds.

Their is no doubt that Carlton's loss of draft picks had a huge impact on them.

We were filthy cheats ;)

Yep, but i think it would be safe to say that every single club in the competition has cheated the salary cap at some stage.

It is just the silly clubs that get caught doing it.

People who bag Carlton for cheating the cap are just naive.

Goddard would have been picked up by Carlton. I am not sure about Wells.

I don't think Goddard would have made a big difference in what has happened over the last seven years but he is a very talented player and I would have loved to have him in navy blue.
