Hawthorn get some good news on injury front with Jarryd Roughead clear
By Glenn McFarlane
March 14, 2010

Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead has been cleared to play in the club's round 1 clash with Melbourne Demons.

Roughead suffered a jarred knee early in Friday's final practice match, against Brisbane Lions at Southport.

But Hawks general manager of football Mark Evans said yesterday the big forward had pulled up fine and would be right to play the Demons.

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26845494-23211,00.html?from=public_rss

A bit more info about Roughy's jarred knee is in the article below:

Hawks put ruckman Taylor on long-term injury list

Jarryd Roughead (knee) and Garry Moss (ankle) were also in the wars in the loss to the Lions but Evans said both should be fine to play in the round one clash against Melbourne in two weeks.

“Roughy was the one we were all worried about as it happened. He over-extended his knee and went down holding it and the medical staff got him off the ground,” he said.

“They checked him and cleared him to play with about two minutes to go in the half. We decided to wait until half time and when we went in and half time we thought there was no point running the risk of putting him out there in the second half.

Could Roughy potentially be a solution to the Hawks ruck situation? The article below mentions that he may be able to play some kind of pinch-hitting role throughout the season:

Hawks to hold eager Rioli back

"It's disappointing, but we don't see it as a crisis," Mitchell said.

"It's an opportunity to try something new. We've got Brent Renouf, who's been playing some pretty good footy for us the last couple of games.

"What we do other than that is a little bit unknown to the other clubs and hopefully we can use that to our advantage."

Renouf played the last two games of the pre-season after overcoming serious burns he suffered in a New Years Eve accident.

Mitchell floated recent draftee Sam Grimley, rookie Carl Peterson and even forward Jarryd Roughead as possible temporary back-up ruckmen.

Another article about Roughy possibly helping out in the Ruck:

Injuries and rucking hell, but Mitchell has faith in Hawks

The immediate challenge is finding someone to join Brent Renouf in the ruck after injuries to Simon Taylor, Max Bailey and Wayde Skipper. To that end Mitchell admitted Hawthorn would either have to hope that an under-developed teenager could prematurely seize his moment or gamble on getting more benefit from their full-forward Jarryd Roughead in the ruck.

''I think that is an option for us, to ruck Roughead, but it does come with a little bit of risk,'' he said. ''There are other options: we can use some other players or use an unconventional ruck set-up, which is something we are exploring at the moment. We only heard about Skipper three days ago so it is only new to us, too.''

A few more articles have been floating around regarding Roughy and our lack of ruckman, see below:

Hawks look to ruckman Roughead

STAR Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead is among the options coach Alastair Clarkson is considering to support ruckman Brent Renouf in Saturday's season opener against Melbourne.

Clarkson was keeping his cards close to his chest when quizzed on his ruck dilemma on Friday morning, with the Hawks' stocks in thin supply.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/91109/default.aspx

Hawks ruck mystery

That leaves Renouf, hardly a veteran at 21 years of age and 23 games' experience, to carry the bulk of the load.

Forward Jarryd Roughead is the obvious choice to assist Renouf around the ground, while debutant Carl Peterson could be used in a pinch-hitting role.

But Clarkson was giving nothing away before training on Friday at Waverley Park, only saying that Renouf would receive assistance from at least one team-mate.

Burgoyne likely to miss until round four

Now, the Hawks, though undermanned all over the ground for today's round-one match against Melbourne at the MCG, are desperately short of big men, having lost Robbie Campbell to an untimely retirement as well as Max Bailey, Simon Taylor and Wayde Skipper to injuries.

Clarkson backed Brent Renouf to do the bulk of the ruckwork with support from Jarryd Roughead, who will be operating up forward without suspended spearhead Lance Franklin.

Season 2010 - Round 1 - Hawthorn v Melbourne
Saturday 27th March, 2:10pm, MCG

The Hawks took on Melbourne in the first game of the 2010 season at the MCG on saturday afternoon. With Buddy out suspended, Roughy was to be the focal tall forward for the Hawks, with help from Morton as well as an abudance of small forwards including Osborne, Brown and debutants Peterson and Hooper. However, the question for Hawks fans was how much time Roughy would also spend assisting Renouf in the ruck due to the Hawks depleted ruck stocks.

Roughy started the game well with strong marking and a nice goal early in the match. The pressure applied by the forwards throughout the game (particularly in the first half) was brilliant with turnovers caused by Roughy and the other forwards resulting in goals. Roughy was given many scoring opportunities to convert during the game, but some wayward kicking saw him finish the match with 3 goals and 5 behinds.

Rough did spend sometime in the ruck during the match, mostly taking centre bounces when sole ruckman Renouf needed a well earned break. Renouf copped a corky just before half time, and due to the Hawks large lead going into the 4th quarter, was rested. This meant Roughy was needed in the ruck more towards the end of the game.

Overall, it was a good start to the year for both Roughy and the Hawks. Good forward pressure, some nice strong marks and team work showed that Roughy is in for a good year, but the Hawks will need him to convert his shots on goal better in the coming rounds, especially against teams like Geelong, Bulldogs and Collingwood.

In attack, Jarryd Roughead - the Hawks' main target given Lance Franklin's carried-over suspension from last season - booted three goals but probably should have had six.

Melbourne's potential comes to nothing
At the other end, Hawthorn left open space for spearhead Jarryd Roughead while the smaller forwards swooped to give defenders no chance. Goals to Garry Moss and Michael Osborne (two each), Campbell Brown (whose tackling was a highlight of the match) and Roughead himself put enormous scoreboard pressure on the young opponents.

Undermanned Hawks brush sloppy Demons aside
That was something Hawthorn had in spades even without Franklin's considerable presence, only some wonky kicking preventing Roughead from booting the first big bag of the new season. Brown, meanwhile, had the Melbourne defenders looking over their shoulders with his chasing, tackling and general ferocity.

The answers may surprise you.

.....

Hawthorn's Shaun Burgoyne is involved in community work in the Northern Territory and Luke Hodge volunteers at the Royal Children's Hospital. Jarryd Roughead is completing his landscape gardening apprenticeship.

Great article from Gerard Healy in the paper today! Let's hope Roughy can take that next step and become a 'hero' this season!!

We need another hero

SUPERHEROES are rare, but having two in one club, up forward, is as rare as Halley's Comet sightings.
Hawthorn has one, Buddy Franklin, but could double up if Jarryd Roughead makes the move from Robin to Batman status. Imagine it: you would need supermen to beat them.

At 23 and with more than 100 games to his credit, it's time The Rough emerged from the shadow of all the other superheroes and made himself their equal.

He has been on the cusp for two years.

Season 2010 - Round 2 - Hawthorn v Geelong
Monday 5th April, 2:10pm, MCG
The Hawks were on the big stage in round 2 of the 2010 season playing against their fierce competitors, Geelong. Games between the two sides have been tight over the past few years, and the Geelong defence has often restricted the influence of Hawk tall forwards Roughy and Buddy.
With Buddy back in the team this week after suspension, Roughy had a bit of the spotlight taken off himself. His opponent changed constantly throughout the game, and was a mix of Harry Taylor (who previously has played on Roughy), forward turned defender Tom Lonergan and the competitions best backman in Matthew Scarlett.
Roughy was up and about in the first 3 quarters, kicking 4 goals and 3 goals assists, as well as pinching hitting in the ruck again whilst Renouf had stints on the bench. His scoring conversion was up this week, finishing with 4.1, but he also missed a shot from 10m out as well as spraying a kick from 40 metres which should have registered a score.
Scarlett was moved onto Roughy once he had notched up 4 goals, and the premier defender managed to keep him relatively quiet for the last quarter of the game.

HAWTHORN has started contract negotiations with gun forward Lance Franklin in a bid to head off a Gold Coast raid.
Hawks football operations manager Mark Evans is talking over new deals with agents acting for Franklin and fellow forward Jarryd Roughead.

"I'm very confident we can sign them up," Hawthorn chief executive Stuart Fox said before yesterday's game against Geelong at the MCG.

An article from the Age during the week quoted Rodney Eade discussing Hawthorns possible options for assisting Renouf in the ruck for this weeks game against the Western Bulldogs:

Brad Johnson set to miss Hawks clash
Despite solid efforts, Renouf has been worn down late in each of the first two rounds, contributing to the Hawks being heavily outscored in the final minutes of both.

"Obviously he was fatigued in the end, but that was certainly no fault of his," Eade said.

"I think they'll probably give him some more help this week, whether (Jarryd) Roughead does a bit more or whether (Luke) Hodge and these sort of players, but I thought the kid battled on pretty manfully.

An article from the Age this morning quoting Peter Schwab, who says that Roughy must spend more time in the ruck today for the Hawks to beat the Dogs. Go Hawks!

Roughead must ruck: Schwab
FORMER Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab says the Hawks must gamble by using blue-chip forward Jarryd Roughead in extended spells as a relief ruckman in a bid to nullify the Western Bulldogs' twin towers in today's blockbuster at Etihad Stadium.

Brent Renouf remains the Hawks' only frontline ruckman because of injury, but the physical and mental toll of carrying this role was obvious when he was worked over after half-time on Easter Monday by Geelong's Brad Ottens and Mark Blake.

Season 2010 - Round 3 - Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs
Sunday 11th April, 2:10pm, Etihad Stadium
After a tough game against the Cats in round 2, there was a lot of talk about how the Hawks would be able to handle the dogs under the roof at Etihad Stadium. The first half was tough and hard, but it wasn't until the 4th that the Dogs eventually ran over the Hawks.
Roughy again assisted Renouf in the ruck throughout the game, but spent the majority of his game time in the forward line opposite dogs defender Dale Morris. Overall, he had an average day, kicking 4 goals for the afternoon but also making 3 clangers and disposal efficiency of 54%. His kicking for goal was again down at times, missing a set shot early, a running goal from 10 metres out and spraying another kick from 45 out of bounds on the full.

For the Hawks, Rioli and Jarryd Roughead both bagged four goals each while bizarrely Lance Franklin was without a goal and was unable to take a mark until late in the final quarter.

Weary Cats, Hawks fall short as Dockers arrive ... maybe

In the end, Hawthorn's better players just couldn't shoulder the load, particularly with Buddy Franklin held in check by Brian Lake.

Luke Hodge, Cyril Rioli and Jarryd Roughead were brave and unrelenting, Rioli simply breathtaking.

Hall boots six as Dogs down Hawks

Jarryd Roughead was inaccurate in front of goal but he was his side’s most effective forward finishing with four goals.

Lance Franklin was in the unfamiliar role of second-fiddle and finished goalless, but in his defence he did push up to lend a hand to the defenders.

ARTICLE : Return of the power forward

svGRAPHIC-420x0.jpg

Lloyd and Richardson would love to be cashing in like some of their key forward contemporaries such as Jonathan Brown, Barry Hall, Nick Riewoldt, Jarryd Roughead and Brendan Fevola have been so far in 2010. Because of all the stories unfolding during the early going in the new season, one of the most significant has to be the renaissance of the power forward.

Season 2010 - Round 4 - Hawthorn v Collingwood
Sunday 17th April, 7:10pm, MCG
A lot of hawks fans were confident about the Hawks chances for the Saturday night clash with the Pies after their recent good record, but it turned out to be a very disappointing night for fans, the Hawks and also Roughy individually.
Collingwood choked the Hawks with their zone, whilst very poor disposal and lack of awareness from the Hawks made it very difficult for the forward line to function. With no Buddy there as support (due to a one-week suspension for a high bump on Aker), Roughy was the focal tall forward option for the Hawks. Whilst supply and opportunity was lacking, it was also wayward kicking and missed opportunities, by Roughy in particular, that helped contribute to the 64 point loss.
Also, as Buddy was missing, Roughy spent the majority of the game forward against defender Simon Prestigiacomo. He spent much less time in the ruck this week compared to the last few rounds, only contesting in the ruck a handful of times throughout the night. Roughy finished the game with 1 goal 2 behinds.
