Hawks too good to stay near bottom: Clarkson

hawks-disappointed-3246b.jpg

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson says the Hawks have too much talent to remain near the bottom of the ladder despite a sixth loss in a row, this time against the Eagles at Subiaco Oval.

Led by a resurgent Jarryd Roughead, who finished with six goals, Hawthorn pushed West Coast throughout the game but fell short by just eight points.

Limited glory for Hawks in win

HAWTHORN clinched a win it hopes may spark its season, yet still it seems more likely to end in smouldering ruins.
Richmond suffered an agonising defeat, yet proved this year should feature at least one fighting victory.

Football's worst team took on the 2008 premier and while the result went to schedule, everything else seemed turned on its head.

Quarter by quarter: Tigers v Hawks

For the third time, Richmond was caught out having players sucked up to the ball and leaving an opponent out the back, this time Jarryd Roughead extracting his first goal.

Little things prove costly for Tigers

The Tigers entered their forward line 16 more times than the Hawks -- and doubled their attacking forays in the last term -- yet the greater class in attack of Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead and Cyril Rioli, who booted three crucial goals in the final quarter, proved the difference.

Rivals bridged gap on Hawks: Roughead

Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead admitted on Monday the Hawks' AFL rivals had closed the gap on them since they won the 2008 premiership.

Hawthorn broke a six-game losing streak on Sunday, but it was without conviction, as they beat last-placed Richmond by three points at the MCG.

That win was just Hawthorn's 11th from 30 games since they beat Geelong in the 2008 grand final.

Hawks have been swooped on: Roughead

Although relieved to be a winner again, Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead admits the Hawks' rivals have bridged the gap on them since winning the 2008 premiership.

Whereas Geelong can claim to have maintained or even bettered their high standards since, having won 27 of their 33 games since that shock grand-final loss, the Hawks' victory over Richmond on Sunday was just their 11th from their past 30 games.

Roughead drew positives from a three-point win over the last-placed Tigers, but conceded that, overall, Hawthorn had slipped back to the pack.

That's history

Even Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead acknowledged yesterday that since the grand final win of 20 months ago the rest of the competition had got better but Hawthorn had not made strides at the same pace.

''I think when we won the premiership a lot of those boys were 20, 21, 22 so they are all still evolving and improving and obviously other teams are watching us and trying to bridge the gap on how good we were back then,'' Roughead said.

Blues aiming to wipe off another bogey

But he acknowledged two of the men who have good recent records against the Blues, Hawks forwards Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead, had to be curbed.

Roughead booted eight goals in Hawthorn's win in round six last year and kicked bags of five in each of the previous two clashes, while Franklin has chipped in with 12 goals from his past three outings against Carlton.

"They're as potent a forward combination as you can get, so our backs are going to have to be right on their game," Harvey said on Saturday.

"They're going to need some help to stop those two blokes, partly (from midfield), but it comes back to whoever's back there to be able to assist and come off and help.

Season 2010 - Round 9 - Hawthorn v Carlton
Sunday 23rd May, Etihad

The Hawks played a much more impressive game in round 9 against the Blues at Etihad stadium. On a warm afternoon, when Carlton had a few injuries and limited rotations, the Hawks too advantage and had a world record number of interchanges to ensure they were able to run out the game. Roughy himself had a solid game, as he often does against the blues, kicking 3 goals 3 behinds. Once again he struggled to convert from set shots close to goal and also missed running into an open goal after stealing a handpass by the blues out of defence. He appears to have to trouble converting from outside 50 however, and a snap that sailed straight through the middle in the 4th quarter will boost his confidence.

Hawks thump Blues

HAWTHORN has breathed a flicker of life back into its sputtering season with a convincing 50-point win against Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Hawks assembled their upset 16.14 (110) to 8.12 (60) victory in the first half and then withstood a third-quarter charge from the Blues that saw a 47-point margin cut to just 26.

Meanwhile, the Blues squandered an opportunity to secure their sixth win for the season and draw level with the fourth-placed Western Bulldogs on points.

Hawks, Saints show they're not spent

Hawthorn forwards Lance Franklin (five goals) and Jarryd Roughead (three) relished another chance to upset Carlton's backline and the Hawks' win was their seventh straight over the Blues, a run dating back to 2005.

Hawks cruise and bruise in beating Blues

Hawthorn's star forward Lance Franklin says the club can achieve anything this year, with an early season injury crisis behind them.

The 2008 Coleman medallist had his best game of the year, kicking 5.4, and so did his team, as they crushed previously in-form Carlton by 50 points at Etihad Stadium yesterday.

Franklin and fellow target Jarryd Roughead (3.3) were menacing, while small forwards Rhan Hooper and Michael Osborne each kicked two

Ahead of the round 10 clash against the Swans, Paul Roos was asked about containing the Hawks twin towers - Buddy and Rough:

Roos: We need our best

Asked how he plans to contain the lethal duo of Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead, Roos replied: "They're a bit tandem, you've got Roughead and you've got Franklin who sort of go full-forward to full-back so you can tend to get a bit lost if you change (match-ups) too often."

"Having said that sometimes the best way to do it is you have a full-back and a centre half-back rather than them confusing us, you just say 'whoever's there take him'."

"It's going to be about pressure in the midfield. If they get really good ball into Franklin and Roughead it's like any other forward line."

"I mean they're very talented and they've got some very good smalls as well, so we need to win the battle of the midfield and get a lot of the ball going to our forward-50."

Hawks announce vice-captains

http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/news/ne...0/default.aspx

From the HFC website

8:50 PM Fri 18 Mar, 2011

"Hawthorn Football Club Captain Luke Hodge has announced his vice-captains for 2011 to a packed Regent Theatre at the Club’s Season Launch dinner.

Hodge confirmed the appointment of Jarryd Roughead and Jordan Lewis as his vice-captains for season 2011."

The Vice Captain stepped up in Round 2, 2011 season match against Melbourne at the M.C.G.

At half time we where down 27 points.

Number 1 ruckman Brent Renouf was substituted out with concussion and Jordan Lewis brought on.

Roughead alternated with David Hale as our centre square ruckman using his great leap to advantage. The stats show he was only credited with 1 hit out but his quickness especially when the ball hit the ground was of great assistance in getting the Hawks back to a winning position to end the game 45 points in front.

10 kicks, 7 handballs, 3 marks, 1 hitout, 4 tackles, 2 Frees For, 5 against, scored 2 goals 1 behind in the win.

Round 3 Hawthorn vs Richmond - Leadership in the wet

With the rain bucketing down all game, Roughead wasn't a stat monster, but played a great team game making his presence felt all over the ground. Up forward he almost played like a small forward at times, getting the ball on the ground, tackling, scrapping and snapping handy goals here and there. Great return to get 3 goals with zero behinds. Bring on West Coast.

Polished Jarryd Roughead hits targets for Hawks.

By James Bresnehan in Hobart
From: Herald Sun April 16, 2011 12:00AM

"HAWTHORN full-forward Jarryd Roughead has revealed how his accurate boot this season is the result of an off-season goalkicking overhaul that will be on display against West Coast at Aurora Stadium today.

Roughead, who returned a wayward 53 goals 46 behinds last season, has drilled a laser-like 7.2 in the first three rounds this year."

Hawthorn's new forward coach, Leon Cameron, was the architect of Roughead's reformed goalkicking.

Good to hear that Leon is making such a positive change plus maybe the Vice Captaincy has something to do with his kicking knowing that it counts just that little bit more as VC to lead the way.

Round 4 Hawthorn vs West Coast - Not too shabby

Roughead really didn't have the greatest game for Hawthorn on the weekend, but did show some promising signs. In the first half he barely touched the thing, though got one goal - a dubious steal of a Cyril goal. In the second half he was allowed to roam all over the ground and also spend some time in the ruck. At times he was pretty handy in the ruck, making a contest and following it up with some desperate work on the ground. He also took a couple of handy marks and laid a stack of tackles. A lot of the good work he did was undone by a flying attempt to mark the ball in dying stages of the match. With players all around him, he went for glory when he could have just contested it to a team mate. On top of that he gave away 50 to keep the Weagles sniffing a chance. As it turned out, we won and the world didn't end. Bring on Geelong!

Round 5 Hawthorn vs Geelong - Better and Betterer.

Hawthorn had a chance to win a close match versus Geelong, but just fell short. Roughead, however, played his best game for the season and was outstanding in many positions on the ground. His kicking boots were on for the game and he slotted through 3 goals from 4 shots. In addition to providing a huge target up forward to take a big grab, Roughead spent time on the ball in the second half, gathering hit outs, and providing some key relief at times in defense. With confidence growing, radar switched on, Roughead is just around the corner from a big haul up forward.

Round 7 2011 Hawthorn vs Port Adelaide - A Rucking Game Game.

With Hale pulling out with a sore back, it fell to Roughead to ruck for Hawthorn. Roughead did a great job, getting hit outs, applying pressure all over the ground. His tackling was first rate and his big body provided many opportunities for smaller team mates to get the ball out of tough situations. Outstanding 4 quarter game by Jarryd and another string to the bow of an expanding repertoire of positions that the Hawthorn big man can play in. Roughead's played 91% of the match on the ground, which is his equal lowest for the season to date. Averaging 95% game time, per match, shows how important he is to the structure and team balance.

Round 8, 2011 Season. Hawthorn v St Kilda @ the MCG Sunday 15.05.11

Jarryd Roughead receives huge praise for his performance against St Kilda's established ruck pair of Ben McEvoy and Justin Koschinke after Hawthorn's number 1 ruckman in this game; David Hale; went down with a serious knee injury in the 2nd quarter.

The Hawks had already lost key defender Stephen Gilham in the 1st quarter to an ACL injury and had activated substitute Luke Breust, so the Hawks had just 2 players available on the bench. In the third, second gamer Paul Puopolo injured his leg leaving us with just 1 fit player although PP went back on into the forward line.

Against this and our incredibly poor start to the game the Hawks fought back to win with many crediting the great work by Roughie in the ruck. It was Roughie's leap and abiltity to tap to Sewell, Lewis and or Mitchell that got the Hawks back in this game. His second and third efforts also a feature in the centre square.

Roughead ready to ruck

By Luke Holmesby
7:53 AM Tue 17 May, 2011

"HAWTHORN’S Jarryd Roughead says he enjoyed playing as a ruckman in David Hale’s absence against St Kilda.

Hale injured his knee in the second quarter of Sunday’s win over St Kilda and immediately left the ground, leaving the ruck duties mainly to Roughead."

This game will have to go down as one of his top three games for Hawthorn to date. He turned the disadvantage of two big men down to an advantage with his hard work and application.

"Roughead said he found contesting the hit-outs to be a refreshing change from his usual duties as a key forward.

But Roughead hasn’t been disappointing in his role up forward, having kicked 12.4 at a ratio of 75 per cent this season."

Round 9 2011 Hawthorn vs Sydney - The hits keep coming

Another outstanding game from the forward, come ruckman, come rover. Let's face it, right now, Roughead can do it all. In the ruck, he easily holds his own, even against taller opponents, but if the ball hits the deck, he is all over it like a rover and feeding it out to his own players or snapping it forward off his own boot. This move to the ruck has all the feelings of when Wallace moved Richardson onto the wing and freed a player of expectations. Another great game by Roughead! :thumbsu:

Season 2011: Round 11 Hawthorn vs Fremantle - Outstanding Effort!

Might be a big call, but should be on track for All-Australian - great ruck work, loads of possessions, goals, goal assists... he's got it all. Top ruck work all day, by the big guy, but when called upon by Clarkson to go forward in the 3rd and 4th quarter, he was just awesome. Roughead provided a huge target for Hawks to kick at in the 4th quarter and although he didn't mark the ball, he always brought it to ground to the advantage of the smaller forwards, often feeding it directly to them by hand. With around 10 disposals, in the last quarter, and running into kick the last goal it was truly a top shelf game from the champion. On ya fella!
