Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

He is what he is. His brother isn't much different. I think us fans expect more from him than the coaches and the playing group do. If he wasn't meeting those expectations, he wouldn't play, simple as that. Just except him in the team, and play on.

One of the problems I have with Reid is his lack of physical development,

He still looks like a second year player, he seems to have put on little bulk/muscle and that allied with his apparent lack of natural core body strength allows him to be moved out of position too easily.

Nice that he occasionally floats across the contest in defence and takes an intercept mark. But as an example when he was played as KPD in the NAB Cup v GWS he was beaten man on man by a younger smaller player in McCarthy.
Up forward if he has an unrestricted run at the ball he can look the part. But defenders have realised that if you body him his influence is quickly diminished.

I don't doubt he trying hard, but it hasn't been working for him for some time.
For a mobile tall IMO he doesn't get enough of the ball and clearly he isn't a power player who takes enough one on one marks. For me he just doesn't impact the contest enough for his continuing selection.

I'd like to see the match committee make the call on where they see him playing in the future.
If it is as a KPD, let him go back to the reserves, learn the position and bulk up.
If it is as a mobile tall then they need to work on how he can get more of the ball and increase his influence on the outcome and again I'd prefer to see him do that at NEAFL level.

he is 23, and perhaps they decided, as a tall, maybe hang back on the heavy weights..they are the experts, not us.

People have more of an issue with his big massive salary I guess. That said 500K this year is really 380K with the increases in the cap.

perhaps you you should chill, we have a long season to go, relax...really, we have a long way to go...

Im one of the few that actually sees value in Reid actually. Long season but I see him taking over Richards possibly at seasons end.

Out of interest, given that Reid is the fourth tall/fourth forward and the obvious instruction is to boot the ball in some way shape or form near Buddy and pray for a miracle what is a "good game" for Reid. My assumption is he is told to take a tall defender away from Buddy and Tippett so what should we actually expect from him if the structure and gameplan is bomb it over CHF at all opportunity and in theory away from him?

When he goes back it is simpler - defend and don't spud up delivery.

So what is a good game for Sammy boy?

A good game for me isn't about X number of disposals for Reid. It is a few things:

1. Did he create structure, at both ends
2. 3-5 marks
3. Did he run hard, create an option at least, taking a defender away.

Do all 3, and it is a very good game. Don't expect him to be the next Buddy, what I expect is he provides a role, and runs all day long.

Exactly. Note when he is in defence. Opposition suddenly start kicking sideways instead of long to a one on one. That allows time for the midfielders to get back. If Tippet goes in to the ruck, Buddy can go deep and Reid to Centre Half Forward. Our structure stays in place and the opposition can't double team Buddy.

For me its less a physical thing and more mental and that worries me the most. He just doesnt seem like a competitor.. has no mongrel to him whatsoever.. im not calling him soft but he is not exactly a luke parker when it comes to competitiveness /aggresion

Some good signs last night. He did some good things when port were constantly getting the ball inside 50.

He seemed to push back any time Pyke was in the ruck and then go forward when Tippet was in the ruck. Can anyone who was at the game comment on this?

I thought he was useful on Saturday, without being amazing. He did a few good things, and I feel was actually useful structurally (as opposed to the meaningless way that phrase was used last year), in that he seem to free Richards up a bit to attack the ball, which is where Ted is at his best. Keep Reid in his olive, you'd reckon.

I thought Sam played well against Port.
Agreed. He works much better in defense than forward. Might still see him forward if we need to stretch their defense or take a man off Franklin

Lot of work to do still

This is a better role though, now leave him there horse
Next week he will be the centre with Mitchell as the ruck and Franklin as FB ;)
