Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

He was important for us today. Astbury gave him a bath in the first half but worked his way back and competed hard in the 2nd. Pretty good game

Wasnt the worst today, But was pretty much ineffective. Wait a few more games and he will be due a good game. Just hope he times them nicely and turns up in a final. Dont want him dropped. But hes not the star people seem to make out him to be, Solid enough role player

I thought today was one of his better games.
he dropped a few that he usually grabs, But his bar is pretty high in that regard. I just dont think he was that influential. But in saying that he was still better than a fair few

Took 10 marks and kicked 2 goals in a 9 point win. Yep, do not need.

The genius on this board is astounding.

He has played 2 good games in a row so from past performances we can expect the next 5-6 weeks to be crud worthy

Tom Mitchell. No. Sam Reid. Yes. Reid is judged far too much by how many contested marks he takes. Leaving aside that contested marks for a forward are getting pretty rare these days due to midfield pressure and better organised defences, Reid is an immense player for his type in staying in contests once the ball hits ground level. He had a shocker against Hawthorn prior to being injured but worth taking notice of his handball from inside up on the wing which released a runner and resulted in a goal*. There are very few players of his size who are capable of that and even in games where he doesn't take his marks, he's still always in there at ground level effecting contests to our advantage.

*13.20 to go in the second. Handball released Jones who found Franklin who found Papley.

Hey Bruce - I think you're on the money. It's the things he does to bring others into the game that is important. Would still be nice if he clunked a few more...

Does he think that he is never going to get contact when going for a mark

Seems that way

Easy to defend to often

Punts I respect your right to have an opinion - but it's a huge call to sit behind a keyboard & make that call on a bloke who puts his body on the line every weekend. That's just disrespectful.

I like him, yes we all want him to become a truly dominant key forward but he is still an important player. We missed him at times last year.

One of the best key position players below the knees as well. He is very good at trapping or picking the ball up off the ground for his height.

We wouldn't have won without him yesterday.

If people want him traded that's a valid opinion. But if they think he should be traded based upon that game that would be harsh.

Comparing him to tall fwds this round he was as good as or better than the vast majority running around. And this doesn't even factor in how vital he was to our success.

Better than Lynch with his 2 marks and 1 goal

Breakeven/Arguably better than Buddy with his 1 goal, 8 clangers and 5 frees against

Arguably better than Dixon with his 1 goal 6 marks

Arguably better than with Hipwood with his 2 goals 4 marks

Breakeven with Membrey with his 2 goals 10 score involvements

Breakeven with Bruce with his 2 goals 7 marks

Worse than Nic Riewoldt 21 possessions 12 svore involvements

Breakeven/worse than Jack Riewoldt

Much better than Waite

Much better than Brown

Breakeven/Arguably better than Darling 2 goals, 7 marks

Better than Petrie

Worse than Stanley 3 goals 29 hitouts

Breakeven Taylor 2 goals 8 involvements

So without digging too far into it, hardly a poor forward compared to his peers.

I think talls just get a bad rap no matter who they play for.
