Re: Updated Order of Entry

So if sculptor is 33rd in the pecking order, what are his chances of actually getting a start?

Re: Melb Cup best price/flucs thread

Obvious firmers are the 1st 6 home in the CC.

E QUEEN:$48 Bfair......$26 Ctrebet

seth

If she was to run a nice race in the Cox Plate, she appears to be the 'overs' at this stage. Especially the $48 on Betfair.
Poor run in the Cox Plate = no likely to go forward to the Cup.
Punt worth taking?

There's a few ahead of him, he would have to finish in the placings, if not win the Group 3 SAAB Quality 2500m 3 days before the Cup.

Oliver is man for Cumani
B56F573E-EAC9-25A8-A650FB4DFF45D1A5.jpg

Damien Oliver will replace Kerrin McEvoy aboard Luca Cumani's Melbourne Cup favourite Purple Moon in 'the race that stops a nation' in 13 days' time.

McEvoy rode the chestnut, who landed a gamble when winning the Ebor at York in August, into a staying-on sixth in the Caulfield Cup last weekend.

But Cumani said yesterday: "Purple Moon's owner Craig Bennett and I have decided we would like to go for an experienced Australian jockey and we have picked a man in Damien Oliver who has won the Melbourne Cup twice already.

Kerrin McEvoy will ride On a Jeune.

Big bets on Irish outsider
335657.jpg

ATTRACTING INTEREST: Irish stayer Mahler's Melbourne Cup odds have shortened dramatically after some big bets.

Only 24 hours after landing in Melbourne, lightly raced Irish stayer Mahler has been backed sensationally to win this year's Melbourne Cup, with bookmakers across Australia facing a payout of nearly $A2 million ($NZ2.37m) on the visitor.

Leading bookmakers were caught off-guard yesterday when a punter close to the connections of Mahler wanted to have $A100,000 on the four-year-old stallion to win Australia's most important race on November 6.

The punter was hoping to secure odds of $A25 for Mahler winning the Melbourne Cup, but last night, bookmakers confirmed that the bulk of the money was taken at $A17.

TAB Sportsbet laid the punter $A320,000 to $A20,000, while Betstar gave $A145,000 to $A10,000.

However, just on the close of betting last night, TAB Sportsbet manager, Gary Davies, took another $A20,000 bet at $12.

"We didn't really have much interest in Mahler until yesterday and after the first wager that took out $A320,000, it still was a winner for us if it hit the line in the Melbourne Cup," Davies said. "But with the last bet we took was at $A12, so it's now a bad result for us.

"This, I must say, is an extremely big plunge, considering that Mahler, who opened at $A41, is now $A11, all up and considering the smaller punters, we are exposed to over $A700,000."

It's one of the biggest plunges on a Melbourne Cup outsider but one fortunate bookmaker, Sydney's Colin Tidy, said that he'd "missed the rush" after he had laid the stayer three weeks ago.

Tidy's firm Betchoice.com gave an overseas punter the odds of $A26, in which he placed $A10,000 on the horse with a payout of $A260,000 if the horse was successful.

The punter scoured Australian bookmaking firms trying to obtain the best price yesterday but after the rush for the four-year-old, the best quote on offer now is $A11.

"There has been a substantial amount of money for him," Betstar's principal, Michael Eskander, said.

"It would be one of the biggest plunges in recent times, but we expected that there would be significant support for the horse once the connections were content that Mahler had landed safely and had settled into Melbourne."

Mahler is a lightly raced stallion from the powerful Aidan O'Brien stable in Ireland. The horse is part-owned by one of the world's most influential horse owners, John Magnier. Mahler has started only seven times for three wins and a second. The stayer will be walked for the next few days at Sandown to allow the horse to settle in and become acclimatised.

Scorpion ready to strike

Punters seeing Scorpion, the highest-rated horse left in this year's Melbourne Cup, for the first time in the parade ring at Flemington on Cup Day should not be concerned if the six-year-old stallion happens to be sweating up badly, usually a sign that a horse might have run its race before the start.

Andrew Murphy, travelling foreman for O'Brien, said yesterday that Scorpion, which arrived in Melbourne late on Sunday night with Mahler, "gets in a wicked state" before a race.

"If he doesn't, you know there's something wrong," he said.

Scorpion, a three-time group 1 winner in England and France, has 58.5 kilograms in the Melbourne Cup and will be ridden by Mick Kinane of Vintage Crop fame.

Murphy said Scorpion was a completely different type of horse to stablemate Yeats, which last year was O'Brien's first starter in the Melbourne Cup.

"He has got a bit more speed than Yeats and he can be ridden anywhere in a field," he said.

Yeats, ridden by Kieren Fallon, carried topweight of 59kg last year and finished seventh behind Delta Blues.

At his most recent start, Scorpion finished a close second to Yeats in the Irish St Leger (2800m) at the Curragh on September 15.

I just saw Princess Coup's win in the Kelt Capital in NZ for the first time on youtube. Wish I had of seen it before the Caulfield Cup. The speed seemed to be on throughout the race, but still she was no where to be seen until the last 150-200m, or even closer to the post.

I know the race was only 2040m but after its Caulfield Cup run as well over 2400m I think this might be my bet at the moment.

Here's the link for the Kelt run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNtSUwb4pa4

Here comes The Fuzz, booked for Melbourne Cup

THE premier team of trainer David Hayes and jockey Craig Williams combined to win yesterday's Geelong Cup with emerging stayer The Fuzz, which is now fully qualified for the Melbourne Cup.

The victory gave Williams successive Geelong Cups after the success of Mandela last year, and The Fuzz will now attempt to emulate international raider Media Puzzle, which won the Geelong-Melbourne Cup double in 2002.

"He's [The Fuzz] been a slow learner and he's only had the benefit of the blinkers a couple of times but hopefully he'll get enough of a penalty to go straight into the [Melbourne] Cup," Hayes told TVN after the Geelong success.

The Fuzz had 50 kilograms and was equal 35th in the elimination order for the Melbourne Cup after yesterday's win. Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter indicated he would announce The Fuzz was eligible for a Melbourne Cup penalty and would announce it today after analysing yesterday's victory.

Hayes is leaning towards not running The Fuzz again before the Melbourne Cup and was thrilled with Williams's ride yesterday.
"Craig rode a great race," Hayes said. "The barrier [No.3] really helped him, but he rode a positive race and the horse put it all together."

Cup tour

IN just 12 days time it will be held aloft by an ecstatic trainer, jockey and owners in front of about 100,000 people and a television audience of close to 1 billion worldwide viewers at Flemington Racecourse.

The cup has been taken around the world to places like London and New York to garner further interest in the renowned race for stayers with King joining the tour for the New Zealand and Australian leg.

Cup-winning jockey Steven King, who won the prestigious event on Let's Elope in 1991, is on the Melbourne Cup countrywide tour and says the public response has been overwhelming.

“It's really opened up my eyes about what the Melbourne Cup means to the people,” he said.

“I've never been on the tour before so to see this side of it and take the cup to the country has been great.”

And for those undecided punters searching for a cup runner to back, the former winning hoop thinks Master O’Reilly can emulate the feats of Let’s Elope in 1991 and claim the Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double.
The double hasn’t been achieved since Ethereal landed both cups in 2001.

Greg Hall rode Subzero to victory back in 1992 to realise a lifelong dream and while he admits the racing game has been hammered by the fallout of EI he says it won't tarnish this year's Melbourne Cup.

"It's called the Melbourne Cup but it's the people's cup. It stops the nation and we all love it," said Hall.

Numbers-wise the figures (for Flemington) are up bigger and better. They've exceeded last year and everything's booked out. As far as the carnival they'll still get their 400,000 to 500,000 there over the five days.

"It's fantastic we are going ahead and there's no problem down there with the EI so everthing's fine."

Any concerns Hall had about the public's perception of the Melbourne Cup in the wake of the equine influenza crisis have certainly been eased by his experiences during the Cup tour.

Hall, Letts and King have taken it in turns along with Wendy Green, the owner of 1999 Melbourne Cup winner Rogan Josh to tour with the Cup as ambassadors to share their own stories with race lovers around Australia and the world.

So far it's been from Cairns to Kakadu with stop overs in everywhere from Kilcoy to Coffs Harbour, Hobart and Perth as well as spreading the message abroad from Los Angeles to Tokyo, Dublin, London and Dubai.

Hall had a turn at Paddington Public School in Sydney yesterday and says the tour shows why the Melbourne Cup is held in such high regard all around the globe.

"It nearly brings a tear to your eyes," he said after speaking to a school assembly of screaming youngsters who all tried to get a hand on the $80,000 Cup.

"I've taken it to Tennant Creek, been to Perth this year and Boonah and Kilcoy but to take it to schools and old people's homes and hospitals, I'm enjoying it more now than when I won it because it brings the dream back to me.

"To see the look on their faces and get the photo with it -- it's just the best idea.

"Even you saw today when I asked who was the most famous racehorse to win the Melbourne Cup and these kids only from five to eight years old and they said Makybe Diva and Phar Lap so you know the history will go on and on," said Hall.

Maybe back to normal after Caulfield Cup injury

ONE-TIME Melbourne Cup favourite Maybe Better is back on target for the $5 million race.

Relieved trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith watched contentedly as the star stayer, third to Japanese pair Delta Blues and Pop Rock in last year's Cup, had a trot and canter at Flemington yesterday morning.

It was Maybe Better's first work on the track since pulling up sore after a disappointing ninth when second favourite in Saturday's Caulfield Cup.

"I had him X-rayed and that came back all-clear, so there's no serious damage. He's only been doing swimming since the race. This is the first time he's been out on to the track since Caulfield. He's only here to trot and canter."

Mayfield-Smith said Maybe Better's condition had improved immensely.
"I'm really happy with him. He's back to normal, I just think backing up at Caulfield and striking the hard track caught him out."

Maybe Better, a drifter from $7.50 to $15 for the Melbourne Cup, will have his next serious gallop on Tuesday.

Mayfield-Smith has decided to start the six-year-old in Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington tomorrow week.
"It wouldn't be right to send him straight into a 3200m race without finding out if he's OK after what happened at Caulfield. If I'm happy with him next week he'll run in the Mackinnon and then the Cup (three days later)."

THE Fuzz has been penalised 1kg for his Geelong Cup win on Wednesday, taking his Melbourne Cup weight to 51kg.
Racing Victoria Limited chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said:
"The Fuzz was very strong in winning the Geelong Cup in what was a genuinely run race, the fourth fastest since the race was extended to 2400m in 1965."

The Dermot Weld-trained Media Puzzle, in 2002, was the last horse to win the Geelong Cup-Melbourne Cup double. He was penalised 1.5kg for winning at Geelong and carried 52.5kg at Flemington.

Kiwi stayer Mandela won last year's Geelong Cup, was penalised 1kg and finished ninth in the Melbourne Cup.

Eskimo Queen was a good run today. Back her now for the Melbourne Cup then sell her on Cup day for a free bet to nothing. This is good advice. :)

Updates after Cox Plate Day

Miss Finland Ran well for fourth, just missed the kick a bit she never bottomed out and fought on at the end, a good sign.
Gallic - Outstanding run and continues to defy the odds in winning the Mooney Valley Cup. 3-4 wide all the way and never looked like losing.
Efficient - Disappointing run in the Cox Plate, he continues to go around much shorter than his superior stablemate Zipping, the 4yo has drifted from once favourite to 15/1 and needs to find something special if he's a chance to win the Cup.
Zipping - A very nice run considering his race was over right from the start after drawing the far rail and conceding 8-10 lengths early with Marasco. He was last and pocketed at the top of the home straight and just went through with a MC trial overpowering those around him and in front when he got space 150m from the line, a frustrating winning 8th.

Eskimo Queen - Ran ok, was in with a chance a good effort and can improve.

Gallic's ageing legs still burn

PROMINENT owner Lloyd Williams enjoyed another sweet victory yesterday when his undisputed favourite horse, Gallic, rounded up rivals to win the Cathay Pacific Airways Moonee Valley Cup.

Making it back-to-back wins in the race for Williams after the success of Zipping last year, Gallic raced into Melbourne Cup contention.

Williams's son and racing manager Nick said all the success Gallic had on the racetrack was well deserved in what has been a remarkable career.

"There is nothing more exciting than seeing him do this again. I put the glasses [binoculars] down on the turn, I knew he was home," he said.

"He's won an Adelaide Cup and a Sydney Cup since he ran third in this race last year and now he will go to the Melbourne Cup for sure. To overcome the injuries he's had in his career makes it even more special."

John Sadler, stable foreman for Williams at his Flemington stables, said the Moonee Valley Cup win was testament to Gallic's tenacity and hunger for victory.

"He has had a lot of injuries - a broken pelvis and two bowed tendons - and he doesn't know how old he is. He hasn't had the greatest preparation but this race will top him off beautifully for the two miles of the Melbourne Cup now".

I don't share the same ill feeling a lot of people have towards you Starz. I can see your points when you post, not that i agree with everything you post but i do appreciate what you have to say here.

Whats your opinion of the Australian brigade of Melbourne Cup hopes?

I have them at the moment,

1. Master O
2. Miss Finland
2. Zipping
3. Eskimo Queen

Perhaps you could explain them to us Ron because it's clear Starz refuses to admit he has no idea, especially on pricing thoroughbreds.
Weekly his assessments are miles off but every week theres some excuse.
It was never that he was off the mark.
I wouldnt call it ill feeling,to be honest its like watching a train wreck....

Seth i'm only relatively new to this forum where i take it you have and he have both been here a while. Seems like you both have history? Maybe you're right but i want to discuss horse racing with other enthusists so we can all find a winner. If we all start insulting each other after a horse runs badly, then none of us will get anywhere. :)

This is the best discussion board on here by far IMO.
Discussion is encouraged here Ron,we also welcome everyone, especially the once a year punter.
No-one is ridiculed for their newness or opinion.

However if posters profess to have abilities which results show they clearly dont have & continue to post rubbish week after week,IMO youre fair game.

Its not about history,I just wont cop liars & cheats.

Ok then, tell me this, why has Zipping been heavily backed for the Melbourne Cup after his Cox Plate run yesterday. You know same horse everyone is bagging Starz over? ... Just making friendly debate.... :)

Sooooooo....

Can anyone tell me after this weekends races the current order of selection? I want to know if sculptor will get a start! Or even just where he is at in the pecking order hehe. Have any pulled out?

Heavily backed?
Every horse that shows anything is given a trim by bookies after the race.
Last week MOR was into $4.2 on some books after the race
You can now get $5 easily.
Gallic is into as short as $11 on some books,by weeks end he'll be $15-$16.

Theyre not bagging him over its MC chances
Theyre bagging him because he thinks it is a star WFA horse & he refuses to see that it fails EVERY TIME it runs at WFA......
You say you are new here........is that so hard to understand?

Hasnt changed,Sculptor would have to win the SAAB on Sat to be certain of getting a start

seth

So there are no drop outs?? Would a place do anything for his chances? And is he even a chance of winning the SAAB?

no good!
