Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

For a while there I thought it might have been a repeat of last year where I had a Queenslander I really liked lined up all the way before a Tasmanian I had in my top 10 fell to me in the second round. Strangely enough that happened on the day as well with Whitecross the pick all the way for the Lions before Collier fell to them.

Yes I have Robinson in my top 10 this year and I rate him very highly and would love for the Lions to get him here on the day.

As it is he is off the Board and I am going with the guy who I think the Lions are lining up to take this year. I have no inside info and I may be reading things between the lines which are not there but I think they are looking to take Beams in the second round. I do not think he will last to the third round on the day and so if they want him they are going to need to take him here. He does fit the need of the Lions for a ball winning inside out player and I think he could be a very nice player for us.

In taking Beams I am leaving a guys like O'Keefe and Suban still out there despite being more highly rated on my draft board. Suban particularly is enticing because of the professional attitude he would bring with him. The other guy who I was also considering for this pick was Lynch who is not really in a need position but his intangibles would be great in the young group.

25. Brisbane - Dayne Beams

Dayne Beams (DOB – 12/2/90, Ht – 184, Wt – 81)

Beams is not rated at all on BigFooty largely because hardly anyone on here has seen him. He played for Qld in the Div 2 Champs but when Qld didn’t progress he disappeared off many peoples’ radars. At the Champs he had two excellent games where he got an absolute stack of possessions and one pretty ordinary game. I think he struggled against NSW because he was tagged a bit and he struggled to beat it. When he is given license to chase the ball and does not have anyone sitting in his pocket he looks very impressive. He has an excellent nose for the ball, reads the ball nicely off hands and he has good hands in tight. He seems to have that little bit of extra time that a lot of the really class inside mids have. This small thing is the thing which I think sets him apart from many in this draft and is why I would like to have him at my club. He has good size about him and retains his feet well in the contest and can take a reasonable mark. Athletically he has a reasonable tank and has reasonable pace but I don’t think he is close to elite in either category. His kicking is interesting. He has good long kick that will travel over 50 metres and he also has a nice stab pass for short and medium distances. Despite having the tools though he doesn’t have the hurt factor on his possessions that he should have and he has a tendency to kick to contests too much. He has been playing senior football for the AFLQ premiers all year and playing very well. He finished second in the AFLQ rising star an award judged in part by AFL recruiters and the ability to play AFL football is one of the criteria. A lot of teams would have had a close look at his match up against Darryl White in the AFLQ finals. He went head to head with the Brisbane premiership player and did extremely well with brilliant touch at ground level and handballing out of heavy traffic. It also showcased his athleticism against a bigger opponent very well. He was the only Queenslander invited to camp this year so there are a few teams out there that wanted a look at him. He has been mentioned in a couple of places as being a possible first rounder (admittedly Qld publications) and Sheehan did single him out as one of the 18 he reported on from camp and I would expect all of those to be likely top 30 picks. In short I think a few of the professionals rate him reasonably highly and he is likely to be taken somewhere in the first two rounds. He seems a quality in and under with good size and reasonable skills and those types of players are always in demand.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

A very, very interesting pick here for the Tigers.

After going with Hartlett in the first round, it is clear we're going big in the second, with Rucks and Key Forwards the focus.

Jordan Roughead is the the only Ruckman still available who I rate as worthy of being taken here, and Aaron Cornelius, Mitch Brown, Jordan Lisle and Tom Lynch are all players mentioned in line with his pick.

Cornelius still seems to me, to be a lead up third forward with great hands, but a lack of pace, and not a huge frame to beat a man one out.

Lynch could almost be considered a KP forward if he had two or three extra centimetres on him, but suffers from being a 'tweener'.

There is a lot of conjecture as to whether Lisle translates as a Key Back or Forward at AFL level. I think forward, so I'm steering clear.

Mitch Brown just doesn't tick enough boxes to be taken at 26 for mine, so instead of going big I'm going really big.

Richmond - Pick #26 - Jordan Roughead - Ruck/Key Forward - 199cm, 87kg - North Ballarat Rebels, Vic

Roughead is a mobile Ruckman with a good leap, and good agility. Is very good around the ground, and uses his athleticism to get his hands on the ball around the ground, and be dangerous in the forwardline.

Build is a little bit thin at the moment, but with a season or two in the gym will develop into an imposing athlete, one who will not be beaten easily in the ruck contests or in the air.

Is a little bit in-consistent at times, but in general Roughead is a very solid athlete and footballer. Is a good mark and a nice right foot kick for a big man, and reads the play well, tending to be in the right places around the ground.

Doesn't have express pace, but will be able to keep up with most Ruckmen in the AFL.

A very promising talent, Roughead will bolster Richmond's Ruck division.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

OK, this is where it became really tough, because I was hell bent on a KPD early but Yarran was sitting there waiting for me, now I still want a KP but there are a couple of more than handy mids sitting there, however, in the end I've gone with a KP. I must say I've only seen a couple of games from this guy but have relied on the highlights packages combined with the gut feel from watching those games.

Pick 27 - Jordan Lisle

Was impressed with his game against WA at the U18 champs. Looks to be a cool customer and played the defensive post well. Attacks the ball and the contest well and looks to be a pretty good pack mark. Works hard both forward and back and provides good attack from defense.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

PICK 28 ADELAIDE NICK SUBAN

Geez I tossed over this for an hour and a half (go on quote me again Ben hehe) but had to make this call.

I thought about a KPP and a more specialist small forward like Jetta or Rockliff but saw that Suban was still there and had to nab him. He brings, hardness, skill and extraction of the footy in traffic to the table. Lovely leg, long kick and an accurate kick, wins his own ball in tight and then can use it on the outside. Can play as a small defender but is always in that attacking frame of mind and that is how I love my footballers. Looks to slot into the midfield and become a hard nosed ballwinner and is also great in defence as he often lays a lot of tackles. Not a big player in height...but he has some very good attributes in skill and toughness that I cannot ignore. The crows need more hard players, I still think we lack a couple of true inside players, always have been a very strong club around the footy and that has served us well but lately I think we are getting weaker in the clearances and also our skils are just dropping a touch. Suban comes in to improve this. Only real query is pace which is not quick but solid enough for the average AFL midfielder.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

# 29 Collingwood - Nicholas Heyne (Gippsland / 187 / 80)

This was a very difficult pick and am surprised I had some of the choices I did. Was very keen on OKeefe and Broadbent here and had planned to take OKeefe TBH. Jetta also appealed as I think he will ultimately become 'Kerr like'. However, Heyne is just a terrific footballer and I have seen a bit of him over the years being a Gippy boy myself. At 187cm he fits the mould of Hine midfielder perfectly and is an athlete like Pendles. The prospect of having two Pendles is just to much to pass up.

Nice all round type player insomuch as he plays in and out, racks up getting the footy, uses it very well and can go fwd and kick goals. With Swan, McCarthy, Stanley all being groomed as ball winners then this was a pick to take some class but also someone who can win his own ball.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Sydney Pick 30 TOM LYNCH (Sandringham Dragons)

Here's the KPP that I was after and I was hoping he'd drop to 30 as I rate him much higher. A real worker and depsite lacking the size of some of the other KPPs about he tends to win possessions by continually presenting. Long term I see him holding down a key defensive role.

I went into this pick with the sole purpose of taking a KPP but was amazed at how many quality mids are still available at the moment.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Oh, I just realised the Bulldogs are up for two picks. Sportz1 is out for the weekend but he did PM me a hit list yesterday with some small write ups.

sportz1 said:
Pick 31 - Tom Rockliff - Small Forward - 183cm, 83kg - Murray Bushrangers, Vic

Small forward thats a very smart thinker and user of the ball he only has to get a handful of possesions to be effective ala steve johnson (geelong). he works players under the ball very well to bring it to the ground where he excells .W bulldogs although they need a big key forwrd they also need a couple of avenues to goals and tommy rockliff is the man to do it for them.

Pick 32 - Jayden Post - KP Defender - 195cm, 86kg - Western Jets, Vic

Good big man with all the attributes can take a strong mark and reads the play very well has come on really well and if he's here i'll take him any day.
I'm pretty sure that'll conclude the draft for the Dogs and sportz hasn't actually made a post in this thread. It's kinda like when Delta Goodrem wins an ARIA but isn't around to make a speech, so she videos in. :p

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Pick 33 Geelong - Rhys O'Keefe SA

Quite surprised he sild this far TBH and was grad to take him. Was looking for KP with this pick but couldn't turn down O'Keefe who is quality Midfield/Half Back. Won MVP for SA in this years carnival and in the games I saw was there stand out player racking up possesions and using the ball really well. Will be a good rebounding Half-Back of a solid midfielder for the cats for a number of years.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

U can very well understand why Clubs didnt want to give up 1st and 2nd Rounders in this draft.

Really really torn here between Broadbent and Shuey.

Shuey the electric quick running midfielder who the Hawks would love or the 188cm utility Broadbent who i rate through the roof and is a very Hawks style pick.

Plus the fact Gilly will be all over Shuey for West Coast with his next pick, i better pounce now. ;)

Pick 34 - HAWTHORN - LUKE SHUEY - VIC METRO - 185cm 84kgs

Metro Vs WA

Hated passing on Broadbent here, think he is an exceptional talent i have ranked in the low teens.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Won't be much of a surprise...

35. Melbourne - Matthew Broadbent (Woodville-West Torrens) - Mid to top-age 189 / 83 utility

Background:

 • 2007 and 2008 SA U-18 squad
 • AFL-AIS graduate
 • Played senior footy at SANFL level this year with WWT (11 games, 6 BESTS!)
 • Round 13 2008 Coca-Cola Star Search Nomination

Attributes:
 • Very clean hands (prides himself on it) ... particularly in close and under pressure
 • Courageous
 • Defensively very accountable ... team 1st player
 • Sound foot-skills ... reasonably good accuracy, right-footed, but can kick both sides ... good penetration pushing 55
 • Has developed his ball carrier/line-breaking ability very well this year ... above average pace (sub 3s 20m draft camp time, but most importantly for me 93% over 10m) ... I feel he's a bit of a straight line player though
 • Strong and balanced
 • Good vision and composure
 • Big engine ... good endurance times
 • Strong framed
 • ULTRA-versatile ... can play on almost every line including run-with roles and has even played KP at CHB (best fitted at HB IMHO)

Video:

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk290tpAjDM
http://bigpondvideo.com/AFLTV/64038

It came down to Broadbent and Zaharakis. I think Zaharakis would've fit Melbourne's needs better, as he's more pacy (Broadbent no slouch though), a natural ball-carrier and has more X-factor than Broadbent, but Broadbent is higher on my board as I'm a sucker for players from WA and SA with quality senior footy form behind them and Broadbent certainly has that in what South Aussies would say is clearly the 2nd best football league in Australia :p.

Safe as a house for this pick range. I think he's the type of guy that won't stand out, but will be vital cog particularly come finals time. The visionary in me sees him ending up being under-appreciated by the footballing public but the club supporters will rate him through the roof.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Text from Gilly:

Pick 36 - David Zaharakis - Midfielder - 180cm, 73kg - Northern Knights, Vic

Write-up to follow, no doubt. I'd just like to say that I think Zaharakis would work really well on the expanses of Subi.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Jarrad Redden

Was tossing up between Cornelius and Redden for this pick, especially after Pinkus said I should have taken a KP the last round. Cornelius would be a handy player to have around and has a great mark, but I just think that Redden has a lot of potential as a ruckman (Especially good tap work) and also maybe as a key backman.

Fremantle need to recruit another ruckman or two this draft and and I doubt he will be there for the next pick, so due to potential demand he is my choice for this pick.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Right in the nick of time coz I'm about to go offline for a few hours.

Pick 38 - Sam Wright - Utility - 188cm, 76kg - Murray Bushrangers, Vic

Wright is an elusive sort of player with plenty of versatility. Physically he bears a striking resemblence to Dale Thomas, and his style of game isn't too different, though I'd say that Wright has more of an inside game as well as a good outside game.

At 188cm he's got a good height for the sort of player he is. Early in his TAC Cup career he was pigeon holed as a small/medium forward for the Bushrangers. Around the half way point of this year they moved him up the ground a bit, where he played in the midfield and across the half back line. He rebounded well when played back and he was pretty handy in the clearances when was in the guts. He was usually able to bob up for a goal as well, and only went 6 games (out of 21) this TAC Cup season without scoring a goal.

His kicking is a bit inconsistent. His best kicks are really good, but he doesn't hit them sweetly often enough for my liking. I know that can be said for a lot of players, but I think it's particularly prominent with Wright. What is really important to note is that he improved his efficiency quite a lot as the season went on and also started looking a lot more fluent on his non preferred side. I'm always really encouraged by a player who can improve consistency in their disposal. His kicking for goal from set shots still concerns me, but he's got good goal sense in general play.

He's a pretty opportunistic type of player, which is complemented really well by his good ground skills. He's quite clean below his knees. Wright is also a good reader of the play, so if he can't be in a marking contests he's great at getting front and centre to a contest to crumb a goal, or at least keep the ball in the forward line.

His overhead skills for his size are excellent and I consider this to be one of his greatest strengths. He's a tough player to match up on, because he's equally adept in the air and on the ground, so it takes a very specific sort of player to match him in both of those aspects.

I like his work ethic too. He runs hard to receive and he keeps this up all game, so I'd suggest he'd at least have decent endurance. His speed and agility also look fine to me. I'd obviously be keen to see how he tests, but I reckon that would only confirm that he's a good all round athlete.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

I got a text from Bloods Boy:

Pick 39 - Nathan O'Keefe - KP Forward (third tall) - 192cm, 82kg - Eastern Ranges, Vic

Tallish Key Forward who joined the Ranges list mid way through the season (Not sure why he didn't at the start). Played mainly as CHF in the couple of games I saw and has a strong pair of hands and was very good kick for goal. Out-marked and Out-played Hurley in round 19 and than was very dangerous in the final I saw him in against the Bushies. Bit of a risk I just think he has plenty of upside and could be a really good quality forward for the cats who will give him plenty of time to develop.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

After careful consideration, and there were quite a few players looked at here, I have decided to go tall again, to really bolster our forward line. Therefore:

Selection: 40 Mitch Brown

Mitch is 194cm and while sleight like most young KPP has a good frame to support putting on some muscle, although to me he looks like he will br more Thursfield in body shape than jonathon brown. He is coragoeus e.g. will run and fly with the flight of the ball, eyes on ball.

He is a smooth mover without really having a burst of speed so is probably best suited to floating around CHF. While he has been described as a one trick pony (mark and kick), he will compete for the loose ball once it hits the deck.
Has a good football brain and likes to bring his teammate into play.

Often competes in the forward line ruck contests for Sandy and don't se why he won't do this at AFL.

He has a good soft hands withouth being the strongest mark in the draft pool.

Kicked 8 in the annual APS v AGS game which put brought a lot more attention to his subsequent TAC games.

Reasonably good below his knees.

Sound kicking action although his set shot accuracy can be a bit off some days.

Has a good work ethic and will work through quiet patches in games.

Will obviously need a fair bit of stength and conditioning and is a few ears off unlike Hurley who could potentially play round 1 next year.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

I think I must be the only one on here who actually rates Cornelius and for me is a mile ahead of Brown as a prospect. Its unfortunate that key position forwards are at the bottom of my shopping list although I may take one a little later on if he is available.

In the practice run I went with Hall here and after his performance at Camp I was expecting someone else to have taken a punt on him. He looks like a very likely prospect and if the Lions went with him here on the day I would be very happy.

As it is I am sticking with my strategy and going for a ruck (well ruckish player). With Tippett being delisted (hopefully to be re-rookied) I felt the Lions really needed to go with a ruck at some stage given that we only have two full time rucks and one part timer on our list at the moment. Leuenberger when he fully develops will dominate TOG so having a backup who could play key position would be an advantage. I was considering trying to wait and take McCulloch in the next round but given there are few ruck prospects I like this year I decided not to take the risk that neither of the guys I liked would be there. Accordingly the Lions take:

41 Brisbane - Tom Hill

Tom Hill (DOB – 7/4/91, Ht – 198.5, Wt – 79)

This is another of the epidemic of ruck come key position players. Clubs have a tendency to overlook these types of players when they are bottom aged but I think the usual rules might go out the window this year. He did not represent Metro this year but did have a very solid U16 Champs last year playing as a key forward. He scored an invite to Camp this year but I am not privy to his results other than his height measurement noted above. At the moment he is very lightly built although he does have a decent frame to build on and will need a few preseasons in the gym before he is likely to be able to have the strength to mix it up at AFL level. He has pretty good speed and agility for a ruck but only average for a key position but he does use his height well up forward, has a good leap and can take a nice mark. His kicking for goal is very good as his ground kicking. He is unselfish, seems to have good vision and will look to hit up his man in better scoring positions than himself. Unless he grows a couple of centimetres more I think he is likely to have a career in the forward line with only occasional trips to ruck. Note however that McCartney in his afl.com article on rucks gave his height at 199.7 and said thought that he was still growing. If that was the case it changes a lot of things and brings him right back into contention as a full time ruck. At the moment he would ideally suit a team with dominant ruckman who likes to have a lot of time on ground. He might suit a team like West Coast or even Brisbane as Leuenberger develops. If he does grow a couple of centimetres though he could be a very good around the ground ruckman with his movement and disposal skills. Lobbe and Westoff (two other key position / rucks) went a lot higher than expected last year and Hill might well do a similar thing this year.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

I really struggled with this pick. Largely because I've not completed my rankings yet and this is about the stage where I'm up to. There's still a few guys remaining that I'm pretty much sorting into their positions now. To be honest, next available on my list is Paul Cahill, but having already taken Vickery and McKernan I'm reluctant.

But not writing it off. God damn it.

I'm going to do it.

Pick 42 - Paul Cahill - KP Forward - 192cm, 80kg - Sturt, SA

I had actually written two paragraphs up on another player, but I couldn't help but think how Cahill won't be around by my next pick, but my other guy could be. My other guy also has a few similar types, so if I don't get him I can get someone else and it'd be no big loss.

My drafting so far for Port has been very tall, but I'll justify that by saying they've lost Cockshell (198cm), Deluca (203cm), Minson (202cm) and White (192cm) off their list. Might as well mention Willits (197cm) from the rookie list, who they had invested a lot of time and a first round draft pick into.

Cahill has a unique combination of strength and athleticism. The thing that most impressed me the first couple of times I saw him was how strong he was. All of the notes I had written down on him from watching him live were about his body work and strength overhead. But as I've been watching a bit of video of him I've really noticed that he's a pretty good mover too.

His agility looks quite good and I wouldn't imagine he's the slowest bloke out there. He looked pretty good on the lead. It's a real pity that he didn't attend Draft Camp (SANFL Grand Finals) and then he was injured for the Screening session, so he didn't test at all.

As I mentioned earlier, he's got an impressive set of hands and I could see him playing in a lead up CHF role at AFL level. I'm honestly not sure how his endurance goes, but I at least didn't notice it to be a problem when watching him play. He's got a decent sort of frame, so it looks like he'll be able to build a bit of bulk.

I wouldn't say I'm all big manned out for this draft, however I will be trying to get a bit more in the midfield. At least Port has plenty of picks to play with.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

ADELAIDE PICK 44 NEVILLE JETTA

Gee whizz another surprise here for me, I was planning on going tall here and very nearly did but I kept looking at this fella still sitting here and just had to take him. The more I thought about him the more sense it made. The crows still actually need a quick, pacy crumbing small forward, we have Jacky but he is not enough, Jetta has more pace and skill than him.

Jetta brings a wide array of skills to the table in speed, pretty neat skills and explosiveness around the packs. Not really the sort to become a midfielder but more a more permanent dangerous headache up forward. He loves to tackle as well, good defensive pressure skills and the ability to keep the ball in the forward line - a skill I deem very important in tight games, especially finals. Bit late so the write up is a tad short but I just had to snap him up here, pick 44 I deem that a bit of a bargain.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

# 45 Collingwood - Clancee Pearce (183cm / 85kg / Swan Districts)

To be fair I was not surprised he had not been taken by here as he has clearly drifted in a lot of peoples thinking so in some ways have probably gone against the grain of most of the group on these next two choices.

AA defender and have seen Pearce quite a few times. Is a player that has impressed me greatly. Has played WAFL seniors as a medium defender and can either play loose or man up. His performances have been very good against men and point to someone who can play in 09 if required. Many look at him and ask what stands out? For me I think its his creativity and decision making - particularly by hand. He is aggressive at the ball and usually gets his hands on it. Its then that you see he very often makes the correct choice. His kicking is better than average - the style is a little awkward but he is prepared to use the corridor and his kicking backs him up more often than not. I like aggressive HBF and he reminds of Guerra and Dew in this regard.

I do see him as someone that in 2 yrs could go into the middle as a part of a rotation as I think he has proven he likes the 'traffic' and the physicality of the contest. He also knows how to find the footy and seems one of those players that cant help but get 20 touches in a game. In the short term I see him as AFL ready for a HBF and he will offer the coach the chance to put either Clarke or Shaw into the middle much more often.

# 46 Collingwood - Aaron Cornelius (192cm/ 84kg / Tas)

This is not a knock on my fellow posters but I couldnt believe he was still here. I started watching for him from #30 and thought he was zero chance to make it so again I fear I have missed something everybody has figured out.

Another player I have seen a lot of over the last few years and he is a favourite. I had no intention of taking a player like this, rather was more focussed on getting DeBoer / Shannon / Hall / Klemke or a tall back like Stopp / Geartner but just couldnt pass him up as he was the best player left at that time. From a needs point of view he does allow us to send back Reid or Anthony so in practical terms it serves a similar purpose to getting a tall back.

Been a terrific player at all levels for the last few years. His carnival last yr was particularly good as a 16yo and has the capacity to really change a game of footy. Terrific 1:1 player and just seems to read the ball in flight better than his opponents. Good on the lead but when in contested situations his body work is good and his hands are strong. Finishes his work very well and is someone that will bring other players into the game as he will usually take more than one defender. He has been conditioned against men for the last 2 yrs when he has played at VFL level. He could certainly be someone who is trialled down back as well as he is very agile, good in the air and tends to play the loose ball pretty well to. However I think he should be given every chance as a fwd as he just has that x factor that you want in your fwds.

Very happy with these two and taking a tall here gives me the flex to take the best player with the last selection.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

okay there are plenty of folk about now who i've considered to be best available but after getting LJ with pick 13 i think i'll start trying to address needs..

Pick 47 - Jamie Sheehan (Murray)

Seriously considered Kade Klemke with this pick but went with Sheehan because i just love the way he goes about it. Although he is young he will set a good example to blokes like Dal Santo about how to go about it.. Sheehan is just like that jack russell that was on the pitch in the I.R over in Ireland:p just chases and chases the ball around all day, He is reasonably quick and is just a great footballer (perhaps a more talented Clinton Jones?) anyway, i think he'll slot nicely into our midfield/half forward

Pick 48 - Jordan Jones (Geelong)

Obvious choice here, St.Kilda needs some young defenders and Jones fits the bill.. as he develops it'll allow Sam Fisher to run off even more (scary isn't it:p) but yeah, Jones always seems to make every contest and is great in the air. Hopefully a little bit more growth height wise in him and he'll bulk up nicely. Was too good to pass on.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Pick 49 - Geelong - Taylor Hunt (Sandringham Dragons)

A really quick midfieder who loves to run and carry the ball. Watched him a couple of times for VM and noticed that he quite gets the ball and takes off breaking lines. His delevery can be little off at times but makes up for it with the speed and carry he generates. Together with Smith the will charge off the half-back line and give Geelong the little bit of speed they require.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Pick 50 - Rory Sloan - Vic Metro - Eastern Rangers - 182cm 78kg

Really liked Sloan here and amzed he has slid to 50  . This probably now shows me i should have taken the 188cm Broadbent (Utility) with my last pick and grabbed Sloan here. Its funny how clubs taking certain players can affect the way u draft. Cant belive so many quality mids would still be available at 50. Ill do a better write up later, busy busy busy.

HAWKS
16 - Phil Davis
34 - Luke Shuey
50 - Rory Sloan

Im getting very worried as well, im starting to agree with everything that Quigley says. Im a huge fan of the Bartman McCulloch :thumbsu:

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

No time for a write up, trying to do this from my mobile, but its allwright...

pick 51 - Melbourne - Tom Allwright

Happy to take this guy here again.

Considered quite a few different options here, a couple of talls, McCulloch amoung them and a few others, mainly Klemke. I went with Allwright over Klemke because he's more of a midfielder and i think he's got much better skills.

I think maybe i rate Allwright a fair bit higher then most, but i was really impressed with the way that he played at the champs. Doesn't have any super weapons, but i don't think he has any major weakness either. Looks like he runs himself into the ground every game and was one of my favourites from the champs. He's good over head for someone of his height and is really gutsy either going for a mark or a spoil, actually he's just generally hard at it. Reasonable pace but far from express, but enough that he'll back himself to outrun an opposition player.

Strong body and some senior experience playing for Tassie in the VFL, and not that it's a priority for Melbourne but would be ready to play very early next season.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Selection 52 - West Coast - Michael Still - Northern Knights, 194cm, 83kgs

I love my Knights boys .

While the need for a small crumbing forward is identified, there is likely to be some candidates available in the rookie draft.

Still is a bottom aged FF who averaged 2.3 goals a game for the Knights this year. Reads the play and times his leads from the square well. Not overly quick but quick enough, uses his body well and has a strong pair off hands out in front of his face which makes him difficult to spoil. Reacts well when the ball hits the ground and evidence of second efforts. Will do the 1%'ers instinctively and is prepared to chase and apply defensive pressure, although a slight query about him being run off and exploited by quicker and more agile defenders at AFL level.

Set shot kicking can be a bit hit and miss and would like to get him a running coach and squeeze a bit more speed out of him. WC fans will probably disagree on a needs basis, but having missed out on Shoenmakers at #20 I think he's worth a punt at #52.

Kade Klemke came into strong consideration too, but I think you got a better version in Selwood last year.

Re: 2008 Official BigFooty Phantom Draft

Sorry guys....wall to wall meetings today. Need to ride home now, but before I go I will take my pick. For all you guys that wanted me to pull the pin on a KP, here it is:

Lance Daly

192cm swan districts key forward with a very accurate boot who topped the goal kicking for the colts comp. A bit raw but bottom aged from memory.
