Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

TIL no one outside of Collingwood rates Sidebottom.

Redde easily outclasses him in every aspect.
Outclasses him by getting less possessions? by kicking half the amount of goals? Give it a rest please.

Really disagree with this about Sidebottom. Ever since he came into the AFL, he has just always had the ability to make the right decision under pressure. See his goal in the 2010 Grand Final in the rain, clean pickup in the wet, spun through a pack and nailed it from outside 50. Will always be a very very high quality footballer.
That was 2010.

Every time I watch Collingwood play he just chips the ball around the boundary line and his kicking is hit and miss.

I am not saying he is a bad player, just that he is an ok flanker which does not = top player in a super draft. Just from our picks I would prefer Hartlett, Trengove and potentially 2 others (Broadbent, Redden but too early to call).

His kicking is flakey-inconsistent, when he's on he's on and when he's off he's off, he's on more though, he's a big game player- 25 possession goal a game type with Xfactor, he has Redden well and truly covered to date.

I think Redden and Sidebottom are relatively close. You could make a case for either of them being ahead of the other.

Yep. I've got them quite close at this stage in their careers, but Sidebottom's still ahead largely due to his last 2 years. Neck and neck at the start of the year, but he pulled away from Redden during 2013.

Sidebottom is horribly underrated by most on here. He's developing beautifully. He's improving his output consistently every year. Both Sidebottom and Sloane don't look like they've found their ceiling yet.

Contrastingly, Redden's plateaued a fraction, yet is reliably consistent over the past 3 years.

Would be interested to know what goes on to make that graph AlibiMonday. Broughton above Rich, Shuey, Zaharakis and Ziebell is odd, but doesn't look too far off otherwise.

Not really when you consider Broughton as a mature ager had several very productive and consistent seasons before his move. He was contributing from day 1, most of the kids weren't.

You should do this for the 2009 and 2010 drafts also.

From memory the majority of a players score comes from games played and Super Coach scores over 75 (because that's considered an average score by Champion data). As you can see in the break down of years Broughton had a really good first 3 years, where as the others you mentioned started off as teenagers

Interesting comparison, the draft seems a while back now but most of these guys are only 23 or 24 years old. Plenty of improvement left in everyone, Ablett Jr. really picked up in his 6th season which was '07 where he went to that next level, and it makes sense that alot of the guys from this draft are in and around that 100 game mark. No doubt there are some very good players but maybe some will join that truly elite category in 2014.

Yep - that's pretty much it, plus a few adjustments.

As of NOW!!!
this looks something like this....
Player.... now draft position...... original draft position..... position change
Motlop 1 (39) +38
Beams 2 (29) +27
Ziebell 3 (9) +6
Hannebury 4 (30) +26
Nic Nat 5 (2) -3
Rich 6 (7) +1
Ballantyne 7 (21) +14
Sidebottom 8 (11) +3
Zaharakis 9 (23) +14
Sloane 10 (44) +34
Hurley 11 (5) -6
Shuey 12 (18) +6
Yarran 13 (6) -7
Zac Clarke 14 (37) +23
Robinson 15 (40) +25
Shiels 16 (34) +18
Redden 17 (25) +8
Vickery 18 (8) -10
Hill 19 (3) -16
Suban 20 (24) +4

this is a BIG difference to the original draft order with only 3 players in the top 10 still who were top ten picks at the time... apologies to Leigh Brown (pick 73) too but just didn't know how to put his cameo into this equation.

You've surely got to be taking the piss with this. Motlop number 1 and Ziebell at 3 ahead of Beams, Hannebery, NicNat, Rich, Sloane, Sidebottom et al??? Sloane slid down to 10???

Is this your thoughts or are you just using some sort of formula.

Are you just taking the piss?

Had a really hard time ranking the mids after Beams. Rich, Hartlett and Hill have been heavily tagged and struggled. The issue with those 3 is they don't seem to have the inside game or engine to break it and become elite footballers. On the other hand, you have Rocky, Ziebell, Hanners and Sloane who don't have the same hurt factor but are running machines/maniacs at the footy.

Very true statement, I think the game needs guys like Rich, Hartlett and Hill to become genuine A graders, not only because I support Brisbane but I would love to see someone like Hartlett or Hill take a game apart and I think these 3 players are all in a way barometers for a team, all long kicks and have that freakish ability with ball in hand to make every possession dangerous. Modern day games we see alot of those 30+ disposal ball winners but there seems to be a lot less of just genuine guns that rip games apart with genuine pace or slotting goals from the boundary. Akermanis comes to mind and I feel there are alot less X factors in the game due to a hard tag or a more incremental development.
