Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

To the guy who had Sloane ahead of Beams, I'm shocked. Beams has both had a better career and better best season (this year) than Sloane. I love Sloane and we could get someone to replace Ball he'd be it but jeez...
Agreed, I had Beams at 6 when I started this thread, he is now 1. And quite easily.

Would you want any players Freo picked up in 2008? Im sure you guys would love Zac Clarke. Good young ruckman. Clarke and Maric would be a strong ruck duo. Ballantyne would be a good fit in any club. Suban Would be a handy player if the right Victorian club get him. Stephen Hill would be damaging with a Strong Victorian club like the Magpies, Cats, Hawks and Saints as all 4 of those teams each have enough harden inside mids to Protect Hill.

You could Imagine how Good Danyle pearce would be if He was at the Right club as well with his pace. Just Suggesting.

Still Kicking myself all these years over the Tarrant Trade after giving pick 12 and Polak for pick 8. You guys got Jack Riewoldt, A key forward freo needs. Freo pissed away pick 8 and Medhurst for tarrant. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Of the 2008 Freo draftees, I would love to have all of them, except Ballantyne. With Nahas, King and Edwards, Ballantyne is the type of player we have one too many of at the moment. I would love Clarke with us though. Clarke, Maric and Vickery would be a formidable Ruck/Forward duo, with any 2 of the three playing forward at one time too.

There's a fairly consistent trends with these types of threads.

The fast/endurance midfield types who walk in to strong sides tend to get overrated early and the bigger, more physical footballers rise over time.

When you have Jones taken off you because you are pantsing him, you have got talent. The kid is a freak and another huge game tonight.

It's a draft though. Although Beams has definitely grown his stocks, would teams really pick him over hill? please.... Had Hill been recruited by Collingwood, he would have been talked up as one of the best mids of all time. Even Hartlett is an absolute gun. Just because they are playing for average teams with no support does not mean they shouldn't have been recruited early.

Um yes, easily the best midfielder in the 2008 draft by a mile.

Beams was on the receiving end of a heap of early frees for the Margetts invented rule GHOSTING.

On shuey and the tagging his output hasn't really been effected too much when he's been tagged. He averages 22 possesions this year. (up 2 from last year). And the only times he has gotten less than 20 possessions (less than his average from last year) were two weeks in a row after his shoulder injury where he was clearly struggling.
Ignoring those injured weeks his disposal counts are
24, 26, 25, 20(the third week after injury), 23, 25, 26, 21
As you can see the variance there is very small.
The reason hill gets tagged is only partly because he is very damaging. The other reason is that he is very easily tagged out of the game and a very tight tag is not really required so tagging players can run off him. Eg. rawlings effort where he had 30+ disposals whilst hill got 7.
From a coaches perspective you can either tag him where he is likely to be very limited and get less possesions etc than the tagger or you can not tag him where he could possibly do some damage. Pretty easy decision really.
Yeah...nah

cheap shot

Is it though?

I think it raises a good point about whether the issue lies with the players Melbourne have drafted or their ability to develop players competently.

I mean, the answer is probably both but I don't think it was a cheap shot.

this isnt a thread about how melbourne develop youngsters. There are plenty of those going around.

Yup, IMO young players who are recruited by successful teams have a much better chance of making it, i think development is just as important as drafting (well almost).

Playing in z better side is clearly an advantage no matter the resources or development.

was josh fraser a number 1 draft pick ? not everything turns to gold for rich and successful teams

Collingwoods list of failed draft picks us as long as any other clubs. Right now their first round pick has back stress fractures. No fault of theres but it happens.

He was, and there are exceptions to of course, but give a successful team the DPs the Dees have had over the years and i think most would agree they would do a lot better.
