Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

I was referring to players that would provide the impetus to win premierships, not just be mere participants in a premiership.

....and please don't go pulling out Sidebottom's stats from the 2010 grand final.

People with a proper understanding of football will know what I mean.

You just proved that you didn't even read what I wrote. I didn't mention his stats from the gf. Enjoying your humble pie?

Watts is fine, he probably won't be the best player from the draft - but he's still performing better than most of the top ten this year and he's going to be a very good player for a long time at Melbourne.

How's Michael 'Chubbs' Hurley going? He's had a pretty good year...
Gee, you're out from under your bridge, aren't you?

Mate. If it makes you feel better then take an internet victory out of petty cash and move along.:thumbsu:

All the flow charts on the planet won't change my mind about Sidebottom.

So you want to judge a player on a couple of games you have seen rather than assessing his improvement over time. You would never sway from your original opinion of him?

There are some good lists here, but it is re-doing not ranking. No matter what, the Tigers would have always taken Vickery at pick 8, as he filled a dire need on our list. If you are going to re-do the draft, you have to factor in needs as well, or otherwise it isn't a re-do, but rather a rate the 2008 draftees.

Based on needs and output, I'd go something like this.

Pick 1: Melbourne: Michael Hurley (I reckon Naitanui is number 1 form the draft, but Melbourne could have done with Hurley as a KPF)

Pick 2: West Coast: Naitanui

Pick 3: Fremantle: Steele Sidebottom

Pick 4: Port Adelaide: Luke Shuey

Pick 5: Essendon: Rory Sloane

Pick 6: Carlton: Chris Yarran

Pick 7: Brisbane: Jackson Trengove

Pick 8: Richmond: Tyrone Vickery

Pick 9: North Melbourne: Dayne Beams

Pick 10: Pick 10: Phil Davis.

That's just how I reckon the draft would pan out if it was re-done today.

If you are after rankings, this is mine:

1: Naitanui
2: Hurley,
3: Sidebottom
4: Shuey
5: Beams
6: Sloane
7: Yarran
8: Hannebery
9: Redden
10: Robinson

Hurley is two years away from arriving at his true potential.

It's a straight up opinion, and it's also the correct opinion.

This place has become so polluted with teenage DT-SC types that when a rare person with an organic understanding states an opinion, they are almost always viewed as some weird pariah.

On who i think will end up the best:

1. Hurley
2. Natuani
3. Beams
4. Rockliff
5. Sidebottom
6. Shuey
7. Sloane
8. Hartlett
9. Yarran
10. Hanneberry

With all these threads I thought I would start one for 2008
Couldnt find another one so sorry if there is already one.
For me

This is only MY opinion

1 Nic Nat
2 Hurley
3 Sidebottom
4 Zaharakis
5 Shuey
6 Beams
7 Sloane
8 Redden
9 Hartlett
10 Rich

I will probably cop a bit a flack for having Zaka high but I think he is quite underrated coming of a B&F season and doesnt get much media attention along with Redden.

Shiels, Yarran and Trengove on the cusp.

Not a bad top 10. Bit Disappointed Hill isnt in the top 10. Sloanes a Bargain considering he was pick 44 in that years draft. in 2012, 4 years down the track I reckon there would be a couple of good dockers in the top 25 maybe top 20.

Freo got Hill, Ballantyne, Suban, Zac Clarke and Walters. In the Rookie Draft Freo got Clancee Pearce, De Boer and Broughton. None I would consider in the top 10 but out of that list, Hill, Ballantyne, Clarke and De boer would be in the top 25.

No standouts or top ten players. But freo should still be happy with this draft. Great depth. What would be a little disappointing for freo would be a lot of these players have more to give than they are giving. All have shown promise at times.

It feels good to get at least 4-5 good players in the same draft. I just hope most will be 200-250 game players. I dont think Ballantyne will be a 200 game player as he was a 21 year old when he got drafted and the fact that in his 1st 3 years has only played 44 games. It seems the only one thats certain to play 200 maybe 250 games is easily Stephen hill. It would of been nice to Take Sloane over Suban at the time.

Sloane is a gun, but I'm sure you're happy with Suban :) He is a jet.

I dont mind Suban But Sloane is a better player.

I have said this on the Freo board. Suban might average 15 disposals a game but hes willing to crash into packs and get the ball. plus hes an Inside mid. Something freo dont have too many of.

I agree, Sloane is a better player. However, I'd love to have Nic at the Tigers.

Would you want any players Freo picked up in 2008? Im sure you guys would love Zac Clarke. Good young ruckman. Clarke and Maric would be a strong ruck duo. Ballantyne would be a good fit in any club. Suban Would be a handy player if the right Victorian club get him. Stephen Hill would be damaging with a Strong Victorian club like the Magpies, Cats, Hawks and Saints as all 4 of those teams each have enough harden inside mids to Protect Hill.

You could Imagine how Good Danyle pearce would be if He was at the Right club as well with his pace. Just Suggesting.

Still Kicking myself all these years over the Tarrant Trade after giving pick 12 and Polak for pick 8. You guys got Jack Riewoldt, A key forward freo needs. Freo pissed away pick 8 and Medhurst for tarrant. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

To the guy who had Sloane ahead of Beams, I'm shocked. Beams has both had a better career and better best season (this year) than Sloane. I love Sloane and we could get someone to replace Ball he'd be it but jeez...
