Well it is draft time and it is also time to look at who the Cats might take on Thursday night. With another premiership under our belts, it is once again time for Wellsy to weave his magic and get us some more late pick gems!!

Pick 17 (Geelong): – Ben Griffiths

Why?
The delisting of some key talls would suggest we are looking to go pretty tall in this draft and Griffiths looks like he is an exceptional talent. A nice lead and a great set shot at goal, Griffiths is the all round package that would add to our list.
If we look for midfielders then the likes of Christensen, Bastinac, Bartlett, Moore all come into play.

Pick 28 (Geelong): – Allen Christensen

Why?
Could very well be gone before this pick, but I think he might fall to our pick which would be unreal. A very skilful player who reads the game well and can be very dangerous infront of goal. Fell away a bit towards the end of the year and this should see him drop. Massive talent. Will make it.
Others to consider at this pick: Jason Tutt (Small Back), Nathan Vardy (Ruck), Sam Reid (Key Defender).

Pick 40 (Geelong): – Troy Taylor

Why?
In terms of talent is a 1st – 2nd round selection however he has serious issues that could see his career cut short. Football has been a saviour for him, so to get drafted is a step in the right direction. It will take a club with a lot of guts to risk him, but the talent is immense. Could be a seriously good player.
Others: Nat Fyfe (Small Forward), Kyle Hartigan (Key Back), Dylan Grimes (Medium defender)

Pick 42 (Geelong): – Andrew Hooper

Why?
Prolific ball winner who could easily play down back and take a smaller guys role. Gets a heap of the ball and can be used very aggressively as he has a lot of pace. Built like a house and is hard at the man and the ball. The question is over his height though.
Others: It’s so open it could seriously be anyone. Maybe another medium defender or a ruckman could fit in here? Dare from the Falcons is also a chance.

Pick 56 (Geelong): – Kyle Hardingam / Marcus Darmody

Why?
Medium sized third tall defender who can also push forward. Not the youngest at 21, however if Drum fails then Kyle could be a chance for senior football next year. The Cats may go young with this pick, however Kyle has been exceptional this year.

Pick 65 (Geelong): – Jeremy Laidler

Why?
Rookie elevation

Official Picks

Pick 17 - Daniel Menzal (Central Districts)

Bio
Could become a very good link up player. One for the future and needs a good few seasons under his belt to develop. His skills are improving and he looks like a good little player.

Pick 42 - Nathan Vardy (Gippsland Power)

Bio
Agile ruckman with excellent foot skills for his size. Ultra competitive and equally strong overhead. Tap work at clearances is a distinct strength. Averaged 15 hitouts in four games for Vic Country U18 and 21 hit-outs plus four marks for Power in 14 games in 2009. Corked thigh didn’t allow him to work out at Draft Camp.

Pick 56 - Josh Cowan (North Ballarat)

Re: 2009 AFL National Draft

it's funny, in a draft with a perceived lack of talls a lot of people have some highly rated talls falling a fair way down the heap. i wouldn't be surprised if a lot of sides take their tall with their first pick and it's pretty slim picking by the time we get a pick.

anyway, i'm sure you'll be closer than matt burgan (who's got 1 of our picks right in the last 3 years)

Re: 2009 AFL National Draft

Haha I like the way you reserved space there rizzo, 2 steps ahead.

I am very interested to see what we target with the first 2 picks. We would assume one of them will be a KPP but I dont want to grab one for the sake of it. I am high on Bartlett, I hope we take him - injured guys are our speciality.

Re: 2009 AFL National Draft

yeah i'm sure we'll take the best available KPP, either with our first pick, or a recycled player later in the draft. there'll be a project ruckman in there somewhere as well for just in case dawson continues to be a spud

beyond that i think it'll be all midfielders (considering that anyone who isn't a KPP, ruck or small forward is basically an adapted midfielder these days)

not exactly sticking my neck out far there am i .....

i'm more interested to see how the luke ball saga plays out

Re: 2009 AFL National Draft

What 'serious issues' are at hand with Troy Taylor? Injuries and health? A wild child?

Wild child. Lucky not to be in jail lol.

Re: 2009 AFL National Draft

Wasn't he in a youth detention centre for a while?

Indeed he was...my 2009 Journalism 1st year uni exam was a feature piece on him.
Freakish talent apparently...lets hope he is fully reformed, for his sake at least.

Re: 2009 AFL National Draft

I am betting Brad Shepherd will be our first. I think we may go for some defenders this year. Sam Reid is a good look in too. But it all depends on what the others select I guess.

The little bit I have seen of him - that is a fair assessment. Very much a loose canon with some things he does but he has a bagful of tricks and if his attitude is right - he'll bring people in through the gates as the years roll on. Not sure I'd be using picks 17 and 28 on him but if he was still around at 40 I'd seriously consider grabbing him.

That'll make a few people very happy on this board.

Re: 2009 AFL National Draft

I just want one of our picks to be a corey, taylor, hunt, so we can continue the tradition of confusion. IS there a Joel Josh, or Enright Josh in the draft ? :p

Well, NT has 3 Taylors to choose from tonight - Troy, Mitchell and Scott. That is a good place to start.

I like your picks. (also good work on putting this up early)

I would be happy with Griffiths and as I've said I'd like to see a KPP or ruckman with one of our first 2 picks. Since there's not that many talls though, whether we do this will depend on who is picked before us I think.

If we go mids I'd like Bartlett as I think once he overcomes his injury he'll prove to be a steal. Also rate Christensen but the late word is North might be into him in the 2nd round.

Video available in post 2!

Cmon Taylor and Christensen with 40 and 42!!

Small defender and a mid size forward so far yeah.

My god, this is the worst draft coverage EVER. The draft is on in the background while a boring ass panel sits there talking about everything but what is going on, then they spend about 12 seconds discussing how one bloke dropped at the end of the round and thats that.

Once again, the AFL fails to learn from the NBA on how something is done.

Got Christensen just then though, people love him.
