Argh! - can I pick Joel Houghton please?
Here's my take on him Ysaye

Joel Houghton 196cm 80kg's

Joel is a smooth moving CHF has very good kicking skills, either shooting on goal or field kicking.

He's a tough kid, that doesn't mind getting physical.

He leads and positions himself well, his form for perth over the last month is very good, with him kicking a couple of big bags of goals.

He only downside is said to have a bit of a attitude at times.

He is leader on field for Perth though and can be vocal during a game.

Very suprised he hadn't been called yet, I know collingwood and the bulldogs have spoken to him in the last couple of weeks.

I expect him to go higher in actual draft if his good form continues.

Richmond - Charlie McAdam – 180cm, 77kg – 5 Apr 90 - Darwin

A 19 year old who just has a heap of class. A left-footer who played off the half back flank for the NT at the Champs, but has potential to play up forward, Charlie, the son of former footballer Gilbert McAdam, is composed, athletic and mobile with a terrific side step.

Works really hard, and added a heap of dash to that Territory back line, and added polish. You know that when McAdam has got the ball something special is going to happen, and even though he probably doesn't fit beautifully into the Richmond structure, he's too good a prospect to pass up.

Considered Tutt from NSW/ACT for his ability to hit targets from HBF/midfield and Sumner from WA.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 52 – North Melbourne – Byron Sumner (WWT/SA) – 31st October 1991 - 174cm, 68kg

Talented small wingman that will drop largely due to his height but has a very tidy range of attributes – terrific contested ball winning ability (wins 47.8% of his possessions in a contested manner, which is excellent rate for an inside midfielder let alone a wingman), clean hands, very strong through the core and hips, highly effective left foot disposal with very good depth, accuracy and low trajectory, good smarts/vision/decision making ability, excellent evasiveness, good pace (particularly off the mark) and clean hands.

Would like to see him win more of the ball, offer a bit more defensively (although he does produce defensive efforts with good impact i.e run down tackles), kick more goals and display versatility in other roles i.e centre square and small forward.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 53 - WCE, Cameron Kickett, 192, 86kg, Perth

Very good mover, provided a great deal of run through the midfield in the game against Vic Metro. Kept running, as did many WA boys, when Metro had stopped. Read the game well, was good overhead and at ground level. Not sure of an exact position for him but we're starting to get to the speculator stage and I think he'd be a very good get at this point of the draft.

Thx to these fellas for getting picks in;

# 54 Hawthorn - Max Gawn / sandrinhgam dragons / 206 / 98 (Luke Hodge15)

# 55 Swans - Sam Reid / murray bushrangers / 192 / 84 (Bloods boy from the Bush)

Pick 56 Essendon Dylan Grimes 192cm 82kg HB/mid Northern Knights

Dylan is a hard working honest footballer who will never die wondering in any contest. He is surprisingly tall, with a good tank however his first few steps are not quick. Like his brother he reads the play well and is good at stoppages and in close in contests. His kicking and hands are pretty reliable without being outstanding. He is just one of those solid footballers who doesnt lose too many one on one contests and will be a really good foot soldier. In a weak draft, with decent pedigree and a few really solid late season games he may just get drafted. I hope he keeps working on his footspeed which will improve his testing. To me he is more a rookie selection but a club looking for a tallish 3rd backman/ run with player could like what Grimes brings to the party.
AFL like player: Troy Selwood

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

#57 - Port Adelaide - Deon Gordon - 187cm, 85kg

Another indigenous boy from NT, but couldn't be much more different from Troy Taylor.

A BP/HBF who can take a solid grab, uses the ball well, and has a strong body. He's also reasonably creative running the ball out of the backline. Concerns would be his ability to defend AFL calibre forwards, and potentially weight issues, at his size. At Port Adelaide, he would be heir to the role out of the backline that Peter Burgoyne has played.

I was considering going with a different player, but I get the feeling he'll probably get picked up soon, so for the purposes of the trial, I was more interested in making sure Gordon's name gets a mention.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick #59 - Carlton - Sam Shaw - 191cm, 77kg - 5 April 91 - Oakleigh Chargers

Again, the next player on my list.

Sam played 3 games in the carnival this year averaging 13 touches and 2 tackles. Hasn't played a great deal of TAC Cup as he plays for his school Xavier. In the 5 games he has played for Oakleigh he has averaged 20 touches, 4 marks, a little over 2 tackles and named in the best in all of the 5 games.

Played predominately as a flanker, mainly across half forward from what i've seen. He has good pace for someone his size and a very good pair of hands. Fairly athletic, agility seems impressive and has a lovely left foot kick. He also seems to work fairly well defensively.

Still lightly framed and not the most aggressive player going around. Could be a nice handy player at this pick, could turn into a good prospect if given a heads up on how to lead and utilize so of his work.

# 58 - Adelaide - Craig Evans / Sturt
Ok wanted this bloke and got him here, given the lack of depth in this draft, I am more than willing to take this bloke at pick #58. Well built inside cum outside midfielder who works well around the stoppages and then is very capable at kicking multiples bags from the midfield backed up with 25-30 touch games. He is ready-made and mature 21yo I think. Has had quite a few dominant SANFL seasons now and I think it was time he got drafted...

Skills are generally pretty sharp, and makes good decisions, much better than most in the SANFL, always seems to have time and space to dispose of the footy. Pace is probably moderate and could be considered a bit of a weakness....but not too bad. Would simply add depth to the midfield that the crows have.

Pick 60 Brisbane Josh Thomas DOB 1/10/91 Ht 178 Wt 70

Okay this was not a kid that was on my radar but I am throwing him up anyway. Apparently he has turned down a contract with the Gold Coast and is going to enter the draft. Obviously he has gotten a promise from someone and you never know it might be the Lions. I have no mail on the issue. He is very light but even so does not mind throwing himself about and is a very hard at it inside mid. He can win a bit of it, has pretty good pace and can get forward of centre and deliver into the 50 pretty well.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

# 62 Collingwood - SHANE PAGE Bendigo Pioneers (get rest of details when have them at hand but from memory about 190cm / 82

Debated a few at this pick but what really attracted me to him was that he was on the cusp of going last year and had a couple of clubs looking at him. Followed up with a pretty useful start to the year culminating in Country Selection where he performed pretty well without being outstanding. Injured at Casey and didnt play final game so many wont have seen him. Having come back was invited to play with Bendigo Bombers and actually got a BOG vs Sandy which I thought was a really good effort as they had some very good players in that day. Followed it up with a very useful game but has escaped me who it was.

Plays a tallish midfielder role but could play HB or HF quite easily. Good skills and can play in and out. He is not in the exceptional category for any attribute but he is a good honest footballer who reads the play well and tends to do the right thing with the ball. Collingwood tend to do well with a lot of these style of kids who arent elite in any skill and hence they are late national or rookie picks (eg Swan, Lockyer, Goldsack, OBrien, Shaw, Maxwell etc). From what I hear he is a great kid and committed to his footy so the folks at Lexus should be able to get the best out of him.

Others considered here were S.Taylor, B.Howlett, J.Rayner, C.Milne, A.Collica, J.Williams, M.Lock, C.Sergeant, T.Silverlock, L.Thompson, J.Tutt.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 63 Ryan Neates 178cm

Well Geelong wont use this pick and the pickings are pretty thin at this stage.
I have a couple of guys i really like, but will keep them under my hat for the rookie draft.

Ryan is a tough inside midfielder/tagger his ball use is generally good, though is a little one sided.

Has good pace and matched Scully for pace in the championship game at subi when they went running for the ball on the outerside.

Would be good value at this stage, would see him as a tagger small defender at AFL level.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 64 - Joseph Groenewegen - Launceston

196cm, 81kgs.

Another selection too good to pass up on. Long term replacement for someone like Koschitzke IMO. Almost perfect size for a Key Position player. See him as a project player but definitely think he has attributes to make it at the big time. Will probably go to the Dogs (IIRC) via Father/Son.

Pick 65- Melbourne - Dylan Jones (Sandringham Dragons) - 3/11/91 - 195cm,86kg

This pick round's out my draft and I was going to always go KPP with this pick. I see this guy as having a huge upside in development terms and he may need some time. He has size, athleticism and a huge leap that could potentially see him as a ruckman but at this stage I have taken him as a key forward/back. I must admit I have a few players still above this guy that I rate but none are over the 190cm mark which I was looking for.

Here are some guy's still on the table that I rate- (It may help someone)
Josh Giddings, Josh Hannath, Simon Potts, Thomas MacKenzie, Callum Bartlett, Andrew Duhau, Johnno Nash,Josh Dyson,Josh Purcell, Brayden Norris, Anthony Long, Ben Sinclair, Kallen Geary, Aaron Johns, Johnny Rayner, Farren Priest & Liam Tobin

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Trent Dennis-Lane, 180cm, Flanking Forward

Rumor has it that Freo will look at mature-age late in the NAB draft. If this is the case, then my favorite mature age player would be Dennis Lane. Has been cavassed as a pick for a couple of years now which goes against him, but he does have that knack of turning up with a few goals at crucial moments. Has averaged about 2 goals a game this year at WAFL level, with some big bags along the way.

Did consider Daly, but if he wasn't picked up last year, can't seem him going this year without having played at Senior WAFL level.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

This pick is again not for needs but just because I rate him very, very highly.

There's a couple I've got my eye on but am happy to have them sneak under the radar and snare them in the real thing.

Richmond - Chaz Sargeant – 184cm, 79kg – 27 May 91 - Lavington

Sargeant is a leading HFF'er with great speed, leads well and has super-sticky mits, in contested and un-contested situations and is especially good overhead.

His kicking at goal is decent, and he slotted 9 goals over 5 games in the Champs, playing really well as a lead up HFF.

A negative is the fact that he could probably only play the role he's currently playing at AFL level, so he doesn't have the flexibility other guys do; but he's very good at what he does.

Late in the draft, go for talent over needs, and even though there's a guy still on the board who has both talent and suits the needs I'll overlook him as I'm a huge wrap on Sargeant.

His endurance is good, he plays the mark and kick HFF role very well and his defensive pressure is enormous - he gets himself into really dangerous spots and is just a natural forward. There's a lot to like.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 68 - North Melbourne - Jeremy Kirkwood (NSW-ACT) - 25 May 91 - 187cm, 77kg

He has the attributes to be a very competent and versatile midfield tagger - athletic, highly disciplined team player with very good defensive ethic, good height (187cm) and frame for midfield/flank roles as well as having smarts to find the ball in offense. Has also been well groomed for a such a role from his experiences at U18 level over the last 2 championships playing negating roles on the likes of Rich, Suban, Harlett, Trengove and Scully, often with very good effect. Will need to improve his ball use and perhaps remodel his kicking technique if he is going to make it at the next level.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 69 - WCE - Aaron Black, 196, 85?, Peel Thunder

Simply couldn't resist this KPP at this stage of the draft. Has very good hands in the mark, good lead and an exceptional kick at goal, I am told. Was draftable last year but is a big lad that has come up from the bush this year. Very happy to draft him at this stage.

Pick 71 Sydney - Levi Casboult - Dandenong Stingrays.

Write up will come next week along with the rest of the ones I still need to do Sorry about the delay guys just been real busy with work.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

#72 - Port Adelaide - Peter Rolfe (South Adelaide) - 181/73

I don't rate too much more at underage level at this stage, so I've gone for a kid that I was surprised not to see drafted last year.

He's got good pace, great agility, and the ability to use the ball generally low and flat. I admit that I have seen him play in the SANFL this year, but I've heard reports from people that he's playing pretty well, and I liked him last year as potential pick.

I think he's got plenty of improvement in him, even as a more mature aged draftee, if he can improve his fitness/workrate. I'm not sure what role he'd serve in the AFL initially, but could possibly make a good small defender, if not a wing/HFF role.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 72 Essendon Justin Van Unen 185cm 87kg Mid/Flank Oakleigh Chargers

Van Unen had his fair share of injuries over the past 2 years but has put it all together this year for mine as a 19 year old. The difference between his best and worst is wide but Van Unen playing well is AFL calibre which is all you can ask for at this pick. Van Unen is a pretty powerful midfielder/ flanker who attacks the contest strongly and is a good user of the footy. My criticism of Van Unen is I reckon he has a tendency to play a bit selfishly and not use his hands when he could and he doesnt always focus on the team target stuff such as tackles, shepherds, blocks and sacrificial running to give up space. Van Unen has an AFL body and if you could clean up his flaws he could be a really solid AFL player- though I must stress he is much more a rookie selection for mine.
AFL like player- Josh Hunt (Van Unen's kicking not so strong)

I considered Serhat Temel as he has the best pair of hands in the TAC ( his 5 goals for Coburg 2nds was pretty impressive)- however Essendon have Neagle and Gumbleton on their list so I am not sure he suits needs.
Callum Bartlett who is a real ball winner and pretty classy operator however he will be taken in the real one I would imagine.
Anthony Long who has speed to burn and terrific vision with the footy and lastly Dylan Joyce because he is one of the best natural footballers in the VFL and I reckon if Robin nahas can make the grade at AFL level so can Joyce who I rate in front of Hicks and Hoegel.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

I'm reaching now but don't mind this bloke for some reason

Pick #73 - Adelaide - Angus Kurtze Sturt FC

The crows need another ruckman, that is no secret and I've watched this bloke run around for a few years now and he has really impressed me with his athletic abilities and general ruckwork. Not sure on his exact height but around 202cm and gets around the ground quite well. Lots of room to improve, no dinosaur and has a big leap. Bit like a young Darren Jolly perhaps. Long way to go but I like him.

Re: 2009 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft- Trial Run (Discussion thread)

Pick 76 Brisbane - Robbie Hicks DOB 9/10/91 Ht 176 Wt 68

You would have to think that the Lions will take a quick small forward at some stage in the draft and getting to this stage Hicks offers as much as anyone. He is a bit of a light weight but he is exceptionally quick and can work back to midfield pretty well. I haven't seen much of him but he seems to know where the goals are and works hard. With Hooper on the outer he is the type of player that should appeal to teh Lions.
