its strange because i dont seem to mind the ABC guys doing this but their tangents are not as far away as the nine fellows.

the ABC however always seem to be cricket first, the nine guys can talk on and on and not acknowledge the game for quite some time.

Yeah, the ABC blokes go off on tangents too, but:

A. They're a lot more interesting, and usually have a good sense of humour

B. They make sure to always mention what's happening

If you weren't watching the TV, say you were in another room, with the channel 9 blokes commentating I reckon 60-70% of the time you'd have no idea what was happening.

Channel 9 need to get over their obsession with employing former players.

Just get good commentators who know the game and aren't complete bell-ends.

Healy and Slater are absolutely unbearable.

On the plus side though, I can't wait for The Block to start!

Here is an extract from a Richie Benaud book:

"...he set down for Brian (Johnston) what was known as a Pyramid mehtod of commentating, the most important part of which, in relation solely to television, said: 'Don't speak unless you can add to the picture.'
You can't put it more clearly than that and it has certainly stood the test of time over the past 60 years. It has the great advantage of keeping things simple and, at the same time, having right at the forefront of a commentator's mind that on television the pictures tell a story, though not necessarily the full story.
...The other aspect is how the commentator goes about telling the audience what has happened if the audience already knows because they are watching the action on their television set at home...Teddy Wakelam quickly realised that radio commentary, which he had already done, was, in every sense, completely different from what the television commentator needed to achieve.
His view all those years ago was that the television commentator would be in the position of helping and explaining what was occurring."

Comparing the ABC and Nine commentators is not the right way to do things, because they have different facets of commentary to account for.

Really, if you're in another room, you should be listening to the ABC commentary, because Nine's commentary is meant for people who are actively watching the television. (I agree that their tangents tend to remove them from play too much).

Totally agree, but it strikes me that guys like Slater and Healy could probably do with a refresher on those principles.

Also, someone might want to hand that book to Sandy and Bruce at the tennis.

Catching a bit of the SA vs NZ game this morning on FOX reminded me of how superior foreign commentary is compared to channel 9. Just far and away more professional and enjoyable to listen to.

I really like Pommie, is he covering the NZ tests?

Get this piece from Sir Richie and stick it up on the window in front of the current batch of morons. Especially the bold bit.

I thought the whole point of getting ex-players is that they could give us an insight into WHY things happen or how players go about cricket they way they do. Give us an insight into the dressing room or the preparation meetings with the team. Instead we get a bunch of ex-cricketers trying to be comedians and TV show salesman. That's why it's crap.

The AFL is just as bad.

I'm actually reading that exact book atm :).

You're right in that regard, I think that your point in parenthesis is what I was trying to get across. It's hard to get into the play when it seems secondary to whatever waffle they're spouting at the current time.

Nine tell their commentators to dumb it down and be low brow (while staying G rated).

yeah they definitely do, i especially hate when there is a LBW review and Tubby goes, "now dont forget the ball cannot pitch outside the line of leg stump"...its for the 1% of people who have never seen a game before.

cricket doesnt strike me as a game you just casually pick up as you grow older, especially female or migrant types

Was it 21 or 22 times the Nine commentators told us SL were missing Sangakarra ?
Um numbnuts, the Aussies were missing their best batsman too

BTW did you know Moises was gay ?
According to Slater this was his "Coming out game"

"Not that there's anything wrong with that"

Can someone please start a facebook page declaring we no longer want Healy or Slater annoying the **** out of us? They have ruined the cricket for me this year, I have not been able to watch a full days play, I spend most my time listening to the radio. They ratings surely must be down?

:footy: thats to the block comment,
but thats how nine works employ ex NSW cricket mindless morons to give expert opinions. for the record Brad McNamaras comment explains the whole nine mentality.

add taylor to the list let him go back to doing his fujitsu commercials

Slater and Taylor having pot shots at Hughes despite him pretty much bettering their ODI careers in the space of 5 matches!

Don't get too excited. I remember when Taylor joined the commentary I was excited because he was one of the smartest captains of Australia we'd ever had. I didn't realise he'd end up being so boring.

I have this horrible feeling that Hussey will be a bit like Langer, who used to constantly talk up his mates in the team and provided no insight because he was too concerned with loyalty to his mates to say anything critical.

Can remember when Slater first started, he used to be on Fox and did a lot of non-Australia games on the Sub-Continent, New Zealand, may have even done a couple in the West Indies. He was terrific, worked well with the other international commentators and added genuine insight.

Nowadays he's just a sellout dill, soon as he comes on, down goes the volume. Adds nothing to the game.
