2012 Draft Discussion

That's right folks, you read that right. The NAB cup is not yet over and I've gone and started a thread about the draft, more than 7 months off.

But it is not my fault. The AFL is already talking it up, so blame them. They made me do it.

I think everyone will have one eye on the draft all the way through the year. I guess for us a case could be made not to use our compo pick this year, we already have a few players yet to push their claims onto the senior team from previous drafts. A back log tends to happen when all your talent comes from the past 3 drafts. Put at the same time, depth in a draft is always handy.

3 changes need to be made to lists each year, as it stands now, who are the 3 to get the chop from our list ? If we use the compo pick, we might need to cut more, is there enough dead wood to do this ? Rookie list is fairly refreshed, so i doubt we will do a lot with it. Also consider some promising rookies that might get upgraded and take spots.

All so hard to figure out this far out. I want to say we need talls, yet we have 3 unproven KPF who seems to not be in the best 22 atm, and 2 prospect defenders with McKeever and Clarke who also aren't best 22. I guess the key in that statement is uproven. I think we need some fresh KPP stocks, and we need to ask soem questions and get some answers on our current crop so we know what we are targeting in the draft.

Why would we have to take more? Surely the worst result would be our 2nd selection would be higher in a draft that reputedly has a lot of talent. I'd be surprised if we didn't activate it. I think we need a top shelf KPF prospect with our first pick and it would be beneficial to still be able to pick up one of the talented mids from the first round, compo would help us do that.

As for the three to chop my initial guess at this stage would be Buchanon, Hawksley and Sheldon. If one of Cornelius or Retzlaff can't crack the seniors and make an impact this year they'd also have to be worried. But you're right; it's all so hard to gauge at this point. All these players have plenty of time to prove themselves deserving a part in our future over the upcoming season. But it would be great to have a KPF that doesn't have so many question marks.

IF this draft is a good as they say then odds are most teams will throw their hats into the ring, personally i'm hoping that we keep ours in the bank, who's to say the 2014 draft won't be better. Perhaps a father/son pick without the loss of our first round or bait to lure a Tippett / or KPP beside there are gems in all drafts if you look hard enough.

It's reportedly a very strong midfielders draft. There are supposed to be a few good talls, but none who are overly spectacular as yet. We'll have to wait till we see how TAC and U18 champs form goes before any really stamp their authority.

I can't see why we wouldn't use the compo pick this year, especially as our window should be opening in 3-4 years time. Three top 30 picks three years running should almost guarantee a steady stream of quality talent onto the list, all maturing around the same time. It's also a strong draft. So, in all, I think the timing is right to use it now.

Definitely should activate it, it's a good draft.

With a whole heap of clubs looking to active their pick (or in the case of some, picks), round 2 onwards will get pushed back. Our 2nd pick might be close to 40.

We're still crying out for more top level talent. Getting another 2 into our developing list will be great so the whole group can develop together.

And our list isn't so strong yet that we struggle to find players to cut...

I think i asked about this draft end of last year, as to whether there is much in the way of talls for us to target, didn't seem to be a lot. Means if we find 1 or 2 talls we want, we might not even have the right pick to get them. Could be very interesting in how the club goes about it. I expect us to finish in the bottom 10, which gives us another top 20 pick, and also means 2 picks in the top 30 without using the compo pick. This might even be sufficient as is if the club wants to hold off.

Will be interesting just because it's the first 'normal' draft for awhile.

I say activate it. We need to start developing some young forwards as soon as possible otherwise in a few years we will end up with a strong midfield who have no one to kick it to. It's too early to pass judgement on Acorn or Retzy but we can't hedge our bets on them either.

Would love us to grab at least one of them - and have heard the Suns have gone a bit cold on activating their QLD zone priority selections on them, despite the fact one of them (Clay Cameron) even trained for part of the pre-season with them.

It'll definitely be a year to pay attention to how the prospects are coming along. Would love to get a genuine Patton-style KPF out of this draft. We can all dream.

Use now,get a good list and keep it looking nice as Geelong,Hawks are seeming to do.Can't see the point in playing chicken with drafts when there are so many anomolies in each one.

I activate it. I think we need to get the best talent we can into the team now during the development phase. Get the group coming through together and get the games into the team we want to carry us forward.

This is a strong year and we may as well try and get the best talent we can. On the forwards I would be trying to grab Mason Shaw (big KP) or Sam Mayes. Personally I love Mayes this year and think he will be a very special player. Definately a bit of the Didak's about his play. Very capable med forward who can go up and do special things in the midfield as well.

I also would not be planning to use one next year with the academy kids coming through. There are a few top shelf talents in next year's group that I would like to find list spots for and using pick next year might be a little bit too much as far as turnover of talent goes.

I think this is the primary point, even moreso than the strength or otherwise of the draft (which I am always a little sceptical on given that drafting is still an inexact science).

If we wait another year to activate the compensation pick, we lose 1 year of development for whatever player we choose. That can mean a massive difference in how much a player can contribute in, say, 2014, when we'll have the majority of our list in the 50-150 game bracket.

And I thought jordan Bourke had done a few weeks preseason with them as well and played in same intra-club game

In the end still probably a bit early for any decisions to be made - I guess will depend on how they (and other Qld 18's) go over next few months in TAC cup and national carnival games and then local NEAFL seniors games, then ultimately how they are felt to compare to talent from other states, before can judge if worth GC taking any Qld zone selections in place of a standard draft pick in what is said to be a strong draft year overall. And given what happened last year, if another club particularly likes the look of a specific Qld boy, they have the option of asking GC to pick him and then trade him for draft picks as happened with Peter Yagmoor

From a local footy point of view, hopefully a few Qld boys end up in contention for the draft / rookie spots. If after the next few months they are thought of highly enough of to be potential draft picks in the open market, then im sure the Suns will still look at the zone pick option. Otherwise both GC and Brisbane still have priority to rookie list Qld boys who arent picked up in draft

Another S.A. lad who caught my eye was Jimmy Toumpas, who, as a 17yo, did not look out of place in the SANFL Finals for WWT Eagles, including their winning Grand Final side.
His run & carry "outside" was an important component of their Finals run.

Yeah, it seems unlikely (but not impossible) that Qlders of any sort of quality will end up in the draft proper. GC will either nab them, a Yagmoor trade will occur or they really aren't that good and will miss the draft totally.

Yep loved Jimmy as well. He will find a stack of it this year in a very strong SA side and be right at the pointy end of the draft.

Good points. Bourke did play in the intra-club too, but he's a bit of a wildcard. Could go for a F/S selection for the Cats. From what I read that could even be his preferred destination. Does F/S outrank a Zone Selection, out of curiosity?

I think zone selection would come first. The F/S plays out in the draft whereas the zone selection exempts a player from the draft totally. Just guessing though.
