2012 Draft Discussion

All the talk of Paperone's dad is just crazy.

If the situation is as dire as is being assumed (and thats just the whole point - its assumed to be bad) then I'd be certain the one thing his dad wants for his son is to be drafted and on his way to achieving something that would make both of them very proud. I cant imagine any father wanting to hold his son back and sometimes life throws up all sorts of situations that make us choose and prioritize.

Love doesn't hinder it gives strength and courage. And it sure doesn't diminish just because of distance. I'm sure he heads to Brisbane with his families best wishes full of hope and pride that he can achieve his dream. And that's what will make the difference.

What a lovely post.Lets hope he makes his dad very proud.
Lets hope he is doing well.cancer is not the death sentence it used to be .lots of inroads to cures now.

Yeah because we really needed another ruck/forward when we already have below-average guys like longer, martin, lisle, merrett and martin who can play that role so another inbetweener-height spud can't be any worse.

Mate, you're posting like a spud at the moment.

The problem is that you are wrong. Mayes is a Mid/forward, Paparone is KPP who has played at both ends and Close is a forward/ruck. You are carrying on like we picked 3 small forwards
Where did you pull that crap from BB?

I said "Forwards" which all 3 are labelled as.

Mayes is a Midfielder/Forward.

Paparone is a tall forward.

Close is a tall forward.

Don't try to put words in my mouth.

I am sure our recruiters have more idea than you about these boys.
Give them a chance before you condemn.

Can't help but notice the big smiles and excitement of the other draftees when they are interviewed....Mayes is not one of them..

..and I'm not panicing...but I am a Lions supporter passing an opinion/observation re the difference in one of our picks, as are a few others here.....atm Mayes does not look happy to be a Lion ....but of course, get him with our superstars;) and that could very well change..
Everyone reacts differently, pretty big thing these boys have just gone through.
Lifechanging event and they are only kids really.

I'd love for us to rookie list Boston but I reckon the Suns might do that.

Who has the first Queensland zone pick in the rookie draft, us or them? Pretty sure it rotates each year.

Only going on articles and you tube videos, but pretty happy with Mayes (although Menzel surely must have tempting), Paparone looks a little awkward, but talk of his endurance is a plus as Cornelius is talented, but still has a poor tank. The Close pick is odd for mine. As has been stated,we do seem to have an already healthy ruck/forward list and for mine, Close looks a lot more a ruck than a forward

Yeah it might be a good idea to play a wait and see with getting highly, highly speculative picks when we're entrenched in the top 8 but we're not and we're a long way off playing finals and hemorrhaging money like there's no tomorrow and drafting another tall utility and ruck/foward when we've got a dozen of them in the team won't help us get there. I guess kerr gets to keep his job as he placates his sycophantic supporters here with a couple of his 'analysis' blogs every year and supporters are leaving the club in droves in the real world.

Who'll replace brown when he retires? Are we hoping one of our ruck/forward spuds will miracously come good or our tall utilities to suddenly grow 4cm and become contested marking machines because I'm not seeing it. We've got no one currently good enough to tie browny's bootlaces.

It will be interesting to see how the club views both Paparone and Close, as they both play similar roles imo. They both have areas that they need to fix imo, but I can see the potential. I also really liked the Mayes pick, you can never have too many elite kicks, and he can potentially come in a provide an option forward from day 1.

Who do you guys think the big winners of the night were?

I think Fremantle, Carlton, the Roos & the Power all did pretty well. Even the magpies with Grundy was a

I'd give our drafting a pass mark, unexpected and unknown on here but I trust Kerr and think we've done well. People asked for a KPF and we got a pair of them with excellent endurance and good skills

Interesting on Garlett

About 4 months to early with that kind of question. No doubt NM fans will be saying that they got a few steals in the draft.

My take:

Mayes - not a steal, went where he seemed to be rated. Good attributes to add to the club, some of which we are probably lacking at the moment.

Paparone - perhaps a bit of a needs pick. Some strengths but some areas of concern. Seems the type of player that some might rate highly but others might only consider worthy of a rookie spot.
Probably the most questionable pick, but also the hardest to predict.

Close - seems a good gamble for someone at this pick. Some enticing qualities and fits a need perfectly.

All three with great endurance - coincidence?

Yeah it might be a good idea to play a wait and see with getting highly, highly speculative picks when we're entrenched in the top 8

Speculative according to who?

This is the kind of meltdown that makes draft night worthwhile.

Also GWS will be raided in 2 years, they have too many KPF and KPD to all fit in together, they drafted 3 more talls this year, and they already have 2 potentially elite KPF's and at least one good KPD. Prepare the chequebooks

  1. Rob Kerr is not our only recruiter
  2. Do you think you know more than our recruiters?
  3. Have you considered what the upside of these picks might be
  4. Please settle down.

Might need to name who we should've picked and why if you want to argue about our selections instead of making up shit.
