With Gold Coast winning on the weekend and likely to exact revenge against us next time it looks pretty clear that we will have the number 1 draft pick this year so who do people think we'll pick.

Popular belief amongst recruiters is that Lachie Whitfield is the most complete and best player in the draft with great speed, evasive skills, and ball use from both sides complementing class and a great tank. But at 183 cms and with some questioning his inside game will he be another Tom Scully and do we need another midfielder like this given the plethora of mids we already have at the club??

Brodie Grundy appears the other likely choice. A mobile ruckman with great hands, nimble footed and skillful and blessed with good foot skills and footy smarts. At over 200 cms he could be the ruck presence we currently lack and perhaps develop into a Dean Cox like type in years to come. But it is too much of a long term punt to give a pick 1 for a player that could take 5 years to evolve into a top line player if at all?? would it be more shrewd to take another grade 1 mid and then trade for an established ruckman when one becomes available?? Adelaide, Richmond and Freo have had good fortune doing this.

What do you guys think?? Personally im torn as Whitfield looks like he could be a freak but so too does Grundy.

Rucks are usually long term prospects. Even Sauce Phillips was only rookie listed. Without Setanta going down he doesn't play a game. And while Chad will have another year, I wouldn't think we have Brogan again, leaving Giles, Phillips, Folau and Grundy as our ruck stocks. That's not a lot of experience. We need ruckmen but as draft prospects I don't know. I'd even go so far as to consider trading the number one pick for a ruckman. We got all the early picks last year and stocked up. We need a bit more experience.

grundy, rare mobil bigman, ready to go .giants have lots of mids allready. if omera was available he would have gone ahead of whitfield, giants tried to get in last years draft.
comparisons whitfield 184cm/74kilo ablet 182cm/86kilo dangerfield 185cm/91kilo
" grundy 202cm/100kilo cox 203cm/106kilo mumford 198cm/105kilo

giants need ready to go players.

Yeah, I would take Grundy (based off what little I know). For better or for worse we have backed another No. 1 run all day outside midfielder. And good ruckman are hard to find and seemingly hard to trade for.

Otherwise - trade Whitfield for a couple of mid-20s, good players :) We have enough kids. The team needs to be filled with some consistent players.

But, I would take Grundy, try and get a good utility (perhaps by trading to draft), trade mini-draft and everything else for 50-100 gamers.

Problem with Grundy - is we kind of need a ready to go ruckman. Unless we can get someone like Seaby. Unless we can back Giles + Grundy (with Folau and Philips) for a season.

What about if we traded our mini draft pick (likely a WA pick Martin/Hogan) to Freo for Jonathon Griffin or to the Dogs for Minson?? Can the mini draft picks be used like that or do they have to be for picks only??

Pardon my ignorance, still getting my head around all this :)

Would you lads be interested in big 206 Robbie Warnock?

I don't know whether the club is but I would. Given he's uncontracted we could get him for free, which'd be a definite bonus.

I think Grundy is the better pick for GWS, we all know Sheedy's love for big men and to be honest you will have other first round picks this year (as a result of the minidraft) and if you don't then you will have traded for a player. If that player is a Ruckman, you would take Whitfield, if it is a midfielder type, I can almost guarantee you take Grundy.

Grundy is probably the most AFL ready ruckman to come through in a long time, he is good around the ground and above average as KPF, so playing him as the second ruck for his first season is fine. His body size combined with his natural rucking ability makes him very interesting and I think that he will dominate the league if he fills his potential.

Personally I would take Grundy as the reward is far greater than it is with Whitfield.

Interesting comment from Paul Roos on Monday night, he looked across the Afl and almost all clubs have a first ruck that has played for another club. Better to poach a up and coming ruckman from another club than develop your own.

Take the midfielder or key defender, leave Grundy alone you would only lose him to an SA club in a few years time.

All the so-called experts are say Whitfield is clearly the best player in the draft and its really hard to see us going pass him. But maybe through the mini draft we might be able to get the required pick to get Grundy as well.

Melbourne giving us their pick 4 for a minidraft pick would be the prime way of this happening I think, if they're forced to use pick 3 on Viney. Otherwise I think they may use that pick on Grundy themselves.

Some talk on the doggies board about the possibility of Minson signing for GWS. If this were to happen, would you guys consider trading the comp pick we would get for Minson for a mini draft pick?

Rookie,

If Minson signs with GWS, the comp pick will probably be around what you got for Sam Reid. It might be part of a deal, but by itself it wont be enough.

Grundy may be a NicNat (huge upside) or a Kruser (good but not great yet)
Whitfiled may be a Cotchin (HU) or a Scully (GBNGY)

I honestly think you will get both. GC trade their R1 pick for a u17 mini draft pick.
Both would fit your team well but if pushed id say Grundy because Whitfield as good as he is a mid. They are not as rare as an elite ruck

If Jack Martin nominates for the Mini Draft tomorrow and a deal is done with Gold Coast then we should get both Whitfield and Grundy!!! That would be an unbelievable coup.

The question is whether Martin's management will be happy enough for him to go to the Gold Coast and nominate?? Let's hope they do.

If Minson signs it will be as a trade or free agent thing. There'll be no compensation pick at all. We got our one player allowed from each club in Callan Ward and they got their compensation for him. Sam Reid was a trade and cost us a pick like any other trade. Low I'll grant, but a trade nonetheless.

I find the idea of these kids being happy to go to the GC or not a bit funny. Realistically, if he doesn't nominate for the minidraft he's probably going to us or GC next year instead as much as I'd hope we've improved since then.

Wrong on a number of counts.

Free agents still generate a compensation pick, the only difference being the top tier (two first round picks) does not exist and the compensation pick is calculated based off the difference between free agents lost and those gained. Minson might generate a first or second compensation round pick if the Bulldogs don't sign any free agents. But if the Bulldogs sign Cloke so they may not get a pick at all (the free agent they brought in was greater than the one they lost).

Sam Reid was also an uncontracted signing, he was not a trade. We can sign multiple uncontracted players from one club if and only if that club gives us permission. In Reid's case, the Bulldogs gave permission so we signed him as an uncontracted player and they got a compensation pick (third round, IIRC). No trade involved.

Hypothetically speaking if you could get say pick 4 & 13 from Melbourne for Martin and your 2nd rounder and say pick 6 from Doggies for Hogan you would have picks 2, 4, 6, 13, 20ish. How many draft picks are you likely to actually use. Would the club go for something like our pick 9 for 13 & 20 seems there is a chance you won't take more than 4 kids anyway and it would give you 4 picks in the top 9.
