Brant Colledge
192kg - 87kg Perth Football Club
STYLE LIKE: Matthew Pavlich

*TRADEMARK: Lead up grab, wheel around

*SUMMARY ASSESSMENT, RECOMMENDATION:

*DISPOSAL, DECISION-MAKING, SMARTS:

- Kicking predominantly on his right side Colledge enjoys nothing more than wheeling onto his right side and drilling the ball deep. Very much a one sided player which is ok if Colledge is played solely as a forward given his athletic ability it is an area he will need to improve.

- Colledge is very much a first option player which is why he’s so reliable. Seldom does Colledge hold up the play, has the smarts to know when not to go, but his first instinct is to look to move the ball on. Has exceptional vision displays the ability to kick to where he wants his teammates to run. Makes good decisions entering the forward fifty and if in doubt will drill the ball long and deep.

- Set shot is good, kicks well over 50 metres from set shots, swings out to the right to gain extra distance. Ball drop could be tightened up a little bit, occasionally dropped from too high.

- Very smart player in general, reads the play very well, routinely executed intercept marks at PSA level, WAFL colts and in the 18’s. Just knows when and where to run. His kick to handball ratio is good, absolutely hates wasting the football. Minimal handballing on his left side, again, an area to address, he will most likely play through the middle and as a forward.

*HANDS: Exceptionally strong, especially over head. Good below his knees.

*OVERHEAD MARKING: Probably the area of his game which makes him so enticing. Combining the lead up capabilities of Paparone and the overhead marking of Shaw, add in his own contested marking one on one prowess and he’s the standout WA KPF for me. Uses his body very well to first out body his opponent, backs it up with a strong core to hold his ground.

*ATHLETICISM, INTENSITY, ETHIC, CONSISTENCY:

- Acceleration is very good, gets his metres of free space on the lead.

-Good closing speed which is demonstrated by his chase down tackling. Applies good defensive pressure for a big man and uses his frame to good effect.

- Colledge’s form between round 18 and 21 was exceptional for Perth capped with a 31 possession, 14 mark game in round 18. Intensity is superb when he is on, actively looks to intimidate his opponents physically, wants to be the man.

- Leap is very good, as is the recovery. Colledge is another forward from WA who extends the hands and makes it very hard for the defender to effectively spoil once he is airborne.

- Strong work ethic, high marking forward who generates his own opportunities by time his leads well and drawing the eye line of advancing mids, unlike other young forwards he makes it easy for his teammates to hit up on the lead. Doesn’t ask his teammates to thread the eye and is rewarded with alot of lead up grabs in space.

Improvement Scope

Large – Colledge does everything well, that said he can certainly improve all aspects of the game and I believe push himself to be a topliner of the competition. There are few gaps, refine the strengths and he will shine.

*AFL VERSATILITY: - High – Midfield, forward and back. Has the size to hold down a spot in any position. Colledge has the balance, smarts and pace to make it as a forward. Strong hands overhead and the work rate to make it as a forward. If you can play forward you can play back

*QUERY: - Injury prone.

Shaw´s lack of defensive pressure and intensity will see us bypass him IMO. Ross won´t stand for someone like that in the F50.
You don't need defensive pressure if you mark the thing and kick a friggin goal. I'll be spewing if they overlook him

edit: unless we get Colledge instead. he sounds alright.

Shaw, White and Colledge with our first three picks :)

I would love 2 of the above 3 players.

Mason Shaw 197/84 South Fremantle

STYLE LIKE: Lachlen Hansen

*TRADEMARK: Overhead grab

*AFL VERSATILITY: - Low – Shaws game is forward, he’s presently one of the better prospects out there but the versatility in his game is lacking. I see Shaw as a deep forward for the most part of his career, if he develops his tank he may have the ability to play as a roaming CHF. Too small to be anything other than a third string ruck option. Comparisons to Tippett are off, not big enough and not as agile.

*QUERY: - Where does he play if he can’t impact as a forward?

The great man is not exactly renowned for his defensive pressure either...

Pav was versatile, Shaw can only play as a deep forward and has a very limited ability to play ruck which means you would need 2 ruckmen as well as him.

I can't see our forward pressure surviving with two (+ CHF) lumbering big men in the forward line.

If he can't play ruck then it is a no from me, although I am not sure why he cant at 197.

Chris25 - Do you think Shaw could play ruck in the AFL? If not can we afford to have two other rucks in our 22 or 21 or 20 (two subs coming in)

Why couldn't he just be really good at taking marks and kicking goals? Why does he need to be a ruck option?

We only need to look back two years to Collingwood's model of two big forwards, one part time forward/ruck and three smalls with the midfield rotating through.

Reality is all of these guys will be mostly playing WAFL next year, in the grand scheme of things the overlap between them and Pav career wise will be minimal.
So if we are only taking one, pick the best one irrespective of if they are similar to Pav.
If we are taking two, then it makes sense to pick two with different styles so they complement one another

So when we were chasing Cloke, how versatile is he?
CHF to FF and pinch hit ruck in the forward line.

I think the query is, if Shaw isn't the first option forward (IE. Pav is still around) then he might struggle to get a game over other talks that whilst not as good up forward, are more versatile.

To be fair, if Freo were going to pick him, I think they need to do what they have done with Broughton/Sheridan and assess when and what role change is going to happen to Pav to allow Shaw to takeover the role as the first option.

Who cares if shaw is not as versatile as the great man.We want a young KPF to hopefully replace the pav of 2012 from round 11 onwards.

To be fair, Pav was versatile and we couldn't kick enough goals. When we left him as a full time forward our whole game plan fell into place. Not everyone has to be able to play everywhere. Harvey did that and nobody had a clue what they were doing. Having a mark and goal full forward who can take a contested mark is fine.

The difference between a Pav type and someone like Shaw is the difference between a CHF and a FF. We do need to think about replacing Pav but we've also been lacking a genuine Full Forward since Modra left. If Shaw is available we should absolutely take him. He might not ever reach Pav's lofty heights but he could be have a more Jack Reiwoldt-esque output.

If you pick him and he cant play ruck then you need a CHF plus a resting ruck in your forward line. With only 2+2 interchange coming in having three big guys in your line up will affect your midfield rotations massively.

I would also say that our forward line pressure will be no existent, which is more and more important these days.

If he doesnt play Ruck, then he will affects our structure too much.

Maybe he can play that 20% of the game as a ruck, or you can have a forward line with him, a resting ruck and the rest either small and mid forward's but I would want to be sure if is used pick 17 on him.

I've never seen Shaw play, but like most of us here I'm keen to get him to address our KPF deficiency. And at 197 cm surely he could pinch hit doing the ruckwork inside our forward 50, leaving Sandi a kick behind play?

Moller or Clarke will be our ruck/forward option, Shaw would be our key forward. not sure why you want two ruck/forwards and no key forward. Pav doesn't play in the ruck and he is now a stay home forward. We would just need to make sure our lead-up/chf type is flexible and mobile.
