With a few potential retires coming up the team could look very different for the next years. What would be the ideal team?

IMO four specialist batsmen (Finch, Clarke, White, Ferguson) plus the wicketkeeper (Paine) would be the best way to go for the top order with two batting allrounders (Christian, Watson), two bowling allrounders (Smith, Johnson) and to finish it off two specialist bowlers (Pattinson, McKay).

Watson
Paine
Finch
Clarke
White
Ferguson
Smith
Christian
Johnson
McKay
Pattinson
------
Dussey
Tait
Bollinger
Marsh
Doherty

Possibly Wade over Paine. And don't think Dussey will be much use past this WC, highly unlikely he'll be at the next one.

Paine is a terrible ODI opener, he'd be better down the order with maybe marsh opening, or even Finch if he's capable?

See I think Paine has some potential as a opener, if you've watched him in the big bash he has gone nuts at the top of the order, if he could translate some of his 20/20 game to the 50 over game. He could defiantly get his strike rate to around 80-85 mark which is a must if your opening these days.

Pretty good looking team you've got there. Hard to argue with much of that.
Hazelwood, Starc and Cummins are 3 others who will start to push hard for a bowling spot, too.

From what I've seen from cummins he would be a Monty for the ODI team and we would be best suited to giving him experience before the home world cup in 2015.

Corporals 11

Watson - Star player, 1st picked

Marsh - I rate really highly – needs to talk to Watsons physio

White - If White is ever going to go to the next level needs to bat in the top order – make 100’s

Clarke - Makings of an excellent captain, needs to continue to learn how to play shots again

Ferguson - Classy accumulator at 5

Paine - Can hit the ball hard – hopefully with a bit more freedom playing down the order

Smith - Unorthodox but taking wickets and making runs, has the right attitude worth the investment in time

Johnson - Like the idea of him floating in the batting order – fragile personality all about getting his head right

McKay - Between Mckay & Hasting – smart one day operators know how to take the pace off the ball good variety

Starc - From what I’ve seen briefly seems to bring a lot of fire and competitiveness

Tait - Jury is still out about 50 over form – but aggressive pace is always going to be an asset

---------------------------------------

Christian - Really rate his batting

Hauritz - Best spin bowler in AU, ruined by Pointings inability to captain spinners

Siddle - Needs to add variety but brings pace & consistency

Hastings - Solid 50 over operator

Bailey - Sort of batsmen you get the feeling would perform better on the big stage.

Too many teams in this thread without a specialist spinner (Smith being in as an all-rounder).

Watson, Christian, Hastings and McDonald are all the same type of player with Watto being a long way ahead of the others. a MAX of 2 will play at once so its a waste having them all in a squad. Smith batting at 6 might be more than 1year away, prefer another batter at this stage.

Fair point, didn't notice that but you're right.

FWIW, I think aMac will be a surprise packet in the IPL this year (considering the shit squad the Delhi owners have compiled :() and will be up for national selection in the near future. Highly underrated player who's had a brilliant season, apart from injuries.

Lock it in, here is my prediction!

S. Watson
A. Finch
C. White
M. Clarke
C. Ferguson
T.Paine
S. Smith
M. Johnson
M. Starc
P. Cummins
C. McKay

X. Doherty/N. Hauritz
D. Christian
S. Tait and whoever else is taking wickets.

Doherty would replace a quick if the deck was a turner.

Smith needs to assume the mantle of number 1 spinner, he is good enough for 10 overs. It's the way to develop him.

Plenty of bowling options in XI-

McKay
Cummins
Starc
Johnson
Smith
Watson
