Well last year come draft day there was a fair chunk of posters (I was one) who wanted us to pick a tall kpf with our first selection, fast forward to the 2013 draft is the sentiment the same?

My view is the same. Our club has never been in a better position at developing young and/or flakey types.
If we did reach a bit for a young kpf ,now is the time to do it under RTB's rule.

I think the best is go for need as long as we don't reach too far - example if we have a pick about 16 and have to reach for a player that is expected to go 30, I would rather best available.

At the extreme it would be dumb for us to take small forward simply because they were best available. Usually there is a range in which a player is rated I think we should look for value within that range with a strong preference to kpf.

Pick 16 if we finish 2nd. thank you contract cheating Adelaide. We gain a spot on our picks as long as we finish above Adelaide. Assume 4th, pick 14 surely will definitely get a quality tall?

Well we've got pick 17 in the ND,and at this stage is looking like we ain't going to be getting an established KPF.
For me this pushes us towards taking the risk (reaching a bit) of going for need(KPF) over our historical best available policy.

Roos has flagged that their pick number two is on the table - would we trade for this to get a KPF? Given GWS already have a plethora of talls it is entirely possible that pick 2 would get Tom Boyd.

Certainly cannot see any other option but to use our first pick on a KPP so this year it is need. Apeness scored well on his goalkicking in the combines and is expected to fall to the range of our first pick.

Stephen Hill? (sorry just clarifying - only raising it as an example not saying I want to do the trade).

McCarthy with first pick if available.

Sheed as a mid if no decent kpp available with first pick if he is available.

I agree.

I wonder if best available will trump a needs basis yet again (and it probably will as it seems our drafting model is based off of this ideology), particularly if that best available is a flanker or a mid which I think it's fair to say we have a very healthy surplus of. Maybe I'm being narrow minded though.

I have always been about picking best available over the KPF and even called to strengthen our midfield depth in orevious years. I agree with Lach on the trade side of things but think then 17 on best available.

I agree with the second comment in this thread. Needs, then best available but with a consideration to what we don't need. With the addition of Sylvia and Lester-Smith 90% likely we don't need forward flankers for example. Best available inside mid or medium defender if there's no good key forward suitable to be picked up at our pick.

We have currency now so we can trade and use free agency to strengthen midfield as we have done last 2 seasons.
Time to get some balls and risk our first pick on a KPF.
Unfortunately so far trading and free agency hasn't been able to get us any decent KPFs so unless we make a big name trade our only hope is using our first pick to grab one.

Should we consider the "Go Home Factor" at all? Should there be consideration in focussing on W.A candidates? Do we gamble on our next great white hope KPF being a Victorian, for example, only for him to want to return in two years or is this covered in interviews?

I only ask this because this year we've seen a few want to leave Brisbane and GWS particularly for this reason.

I agree with the Victorians side of thing. People from Adelaide though, ala Pav, are just grateful for the one way ticket.

We'll have a KF by end of trade week. May not be to everyone's liking but we'll have one. Then pick 17 gets us another tall I'd say. With Silvia able to run through the middle, Simpson and Morabito (hopefully) coming on we can afford to grab a tall.

Do you know something Lach?

Here is my ideal draft period

FA list Sylvia and Pods (please god no Ellis)
1st round best available prob a mid
2nd round Best KP
Trade Michie for A Kennedy from the Roos
3rd round (if used) Garlett or Thorp

Rookie list Marlon Motlop sends a good message to players to come to Peel alas what the Hawks do with Box Hill players.

Which clubs are wanting to replenish their KPF stocks?
Cats, lions and blues is my guess.

Cats are so-so, Lions yes. Blues are desperate, more so than us.

Those you didn't mention: Bulldogs is the other one that are desperate, right up there desperate for KPF. Port could do with one and I think will pick for need in there somewhere, probably not early though. Richmond are a bit thin in that area, not desperate though. Saints are going to be desperate soon, but they've got a couple coming though and Lee is working out OK for them so far, but if there's quality at one of their picks it wouldn't surprise me if they pull the trigger.

That's just off the top of my head.

Realistically, there are probably 3 clubs that would be tempted to 'reach' for a KPF to fill a need rather than go best available, Doggies, Blues and Us, probably in that order.

I highly doubt the dogs would reach for McCarthy, but the blues as you say could well do.

Yeah, thinking that through, Dogs wouldn't. They do need a marking tall fwd, but given they're going to have pretty good picks, they'll go for best available and likely skilled midfielders which is what they need as much if not more.

so ideally we should try 2 trade picks so as to get in before the Blues at least

Blues draft discussion is all about increasing their midfield depth,so fingers crossed McCarthy will still be available at our first selection.

I've read through a few of the Phantom drafts and pretty much all have us selecting McCarthy.
