In the Intra club match Stefan Martin looked the goods, in my opinion a lot better than lisle. Its interesting vossy is grooming Mcgrath to becme a small forward and good to see cornelius get his act together and score three goals, the thing is can you have bewick and cornelius in the same side? with green & beams Brown&Martin/lisle can do we have room for them both? thinking they'd use one forward flank for rich or redden, dissapointed about staker though shit happens

Interesting to see some have named both Lisle and Martin. I can't see this happening, even if Staker is out.

They have been saying for the past couple of years that their preferred option is to have two talls and a resting ruckman up forward.

Code:
Adcock Merrett Patfull
Docherty Maguire Golby
Hanley Rich Rockliff
Bewick Lisle Zorko
Green Brown Martin

Leuenberger, Redden, Moloney

(from) Beams, Black, Polec, Karnezis, Mayes, Crisp, Yeo

I had always thought they wanted to have 2 tall forwards, one of which could play 20% in the ruck with the main ruckman resting in the forward line. As such I would be surprised to see Lisle + Martin in the round 1 team, however perhaps I have misread last years team selections.

replace lisle with cornelius and that would be more likely

I prefer Lisle to be honest. When he's on his game, Cornelius' sticky hands when going for a mark I love. But for me, Lisle is stronger in the contest, shooting for goal and basically around the ground.

have you been hit over the head by a rock, watch the interclub game, martin looked the goods my friend, lisle looked sloppy and lisle a better setshot pfft i love brisbane and lisle but even i cant back his setshots fom even 30 metres out

Lisle dominated the first quarter and played on a much tougher opponent. Martin looked good too, not nearly as cut and dry as you are saying.

I admit I haven't watched the intra-club game or in fact any training sessions this off-season, I don't live in Brisbane and haven't got down there. I'm simply going off what I saw last season. I don't doubt Martin looked the goods, I just think that Lisle > Cornelius at this point in time.

In summary ... no, I don't think I have been hit over the head by a rock.

hahaa sorry that was a bit aggresive of me, i was a bit harsh on lisle ill admit, though the reason i was swapping for cornelius wasn't due to him playing against a tougher opponent or playing better, acorn just provides our team with a more of a mid sized option where having Browny Martin and Lisle could cause havoc, and i believe Martin has the job over lisle, brisbanes selectors may completely disagree

Admirable restraint on your part.

My team atm:

FB: Adcock Merrett Patfull
HB: Yeo Maguire Golby
C: Hanley Rich Beams
HF: Rockliff Brown Zorko
FF: Green Martin Bewick
R: Leuenberger Redden Moloney
Bench: Raines Black Karnezis McGrath

Emg - Crisp Lester Docherty

A few thoughts:

- It has been signalled that Golby is going to be freed up to play the Drummond role at the back. That means someone has to step in and take the number one quick small forward. Yeo is better defensively than Docherty and that gets him picked early. Yeo is decent going forward as well and with Golby, Hanley, Adcock and Beams getting back to help run from defense we should be fine.

- Lots of positive talk about Beams this offseason and he is a guy I am very high on. He is an outside in player who I think will actually play on the wing.

- I have gone small up forward with only two tall targets but it is a quick and very good defensive forward line. Rather than playing a guy who is a marginal tall I am going with a group of small mediums who all deserve to be starting. Karnezis is capable of playing as a third tall at 192 and Bewick plays tall. Pick a team that plays to our strengths and this is it. If I was going to pick a true third tall it would be Cornelius who I think is much more of a goal scoring threat than Lisle who I am not impressed with. Lisle is soft and does not provide the marking target we need. Honestly I expect Michael to be in this side come midyear taking the Martin spot at FF and backing up Leuey.

- Crisp is one guy who I think might be the smokey for round 1. Voss loves him, he has really upped his running and he has some flexibility. He is the guy who could do what Rocky did between year 1 and 2.

Do I take it you think he will be upgraded before the cut-off?
Agree with you about Crisp. Interesting that Lester was a regular last year and as far as I know has done nothing wrong over the pre-season but may have been overtaken by Yeo who looks very promising - tallish, quick and probably even more versatile. Crisp I think also gives us great versatility. Several will get a game first up but will be under immediate pressure if they don't perform - McGrath, Beams, Green and even Rocky.

Quigs, I like your team and largely agree with your comments, athough obviously time (and possibly even the NAB Cup) will tell whether Yeo is better defensively than Docherty, whether Lisle can step up etc.

Reading your summary and thinking about it, what does seem to be certain is that, due to the development of our guys in the 19-22 age bracket, our depth is far better this year. The selection process is a genuinely challenging one at the moment. Most of the young blokes really seem to be coming along well, and the emergence of rookies like Crisp, and hopefully Michael and Clarke, makes our recent drafting look even better. The apparent renewal of Karnezis just adds to our options and flexibility.

I wouldn't say I was absolutely confident (yet) about our medium term prospects, but I think it's fair to say that we're a mile in front of where we were this time last year. Bring on the footy!:footy:

Are you comparing Lisle and Cornelius in this scenario? In terms of 'shooting for goal', I would easily lean towards Ace in that department. Personally, I don't see Lisle and Cornelius vying for the same spot in our 22. I'm of the view, put simply, that selection between our forwards will come in the form of three categories. Firstly, the tall forwards. Brown is the obvious given and then one of Martin and Lisle. I would then put Cornelius in the next category, competing with the likes of Bewick, McGrath and possibly Karnezis as a leading marking forward depending on our structure. Lastly is the small forwards coming from Green, Banfield, Zorko, Mayes and Bartlett. No doubt some, like Bewick and McGrath, have the ability to play the genuine third tall or smaller leading forward ir could be pushed further up field, so there is some genuine overlap.

That being said, this is my ideal side for 2013, however not necessarily the round one side:

B: Golby Merrett Adcock
HB: Patfull Maguire Hanley
C: Redden Moloney Rockliff
HF: Zorko Lisle Black
F: Cornelius Brown McGrath
R: Leuenberger Raines Rich
INT: Beams Bewick Polkinghorne
SUB: Crisp
E: Docherty Harwood Yeo

Bloody tougher exercise than I thought. No doubt the match committee has their work cut this year.

Yep. And every selection will even then will result in some 'constructive criticism' from the Brissy board here.

I can smell it.

I think Vossy sees decision making and disposal as paramount in the backline and Doc has Yeo well covered in these areas. But it’s a really tough choice, it may well come down to who looks better in the NAB.

It really feels like there is only one spot up for grabs in the backline, forward set up not nearly as clear. Could see a scenario where Bewick and PK play together as a 'third' tall.

Well...I have when,of all things, dismantling a budgee aviary a long time ago...believe me,you will know if it happens.

On second thoughts...maybe not, depending on the drop height.

Disposal yes, but Yeo showed some real composure last year in traffic. Docherty may be better but hasn't reall been tested yet, on either measure. Let's see how he goes in the big time.

I noticed in today's Oz Greg Denham suggested there'd be a Leuey/Longer combination in our round one side.

I don't know if he was just guessing, or whether he had any information to that effect.

Greg Denham has worse "information" than any reporter covering the AFL.

Yeah he said "Leuenberger is hoping to partner" which sounds more like a grab from Leuey than an insight into selection. How could that sort of selection be caste yet, we haven't even had the first NAB cup game.

My week 1 (of the finals) team...

Patful Merrett Golby
Adcock Maguire Docherty
Hanley Rich Polec
Bewick Brown Zorko
Banfield Staker McGrath

Ruck: Leunberger, Redden, Rockliffe
Int: Black, Moloney, Beams
Sub: Mayes

Harwood, Green and Bewick the questionable ones to miss out. Harwood will get used, particularly in games where the opposition consistently have a skillful mid resting up forward. But he misses the cut in this side simply because patful, merret, golby, adcock, maquire and docherty will be impossible to consistenly contain (and this has to be a priority for voss and co, brisbane have consistently come in towards the bottom of the rank in transition from defence to attack the last few seasons).

Green and Banfield is a 50-50. Expecting Bewick to play 15+ games this season but he misses out to Karnezis because at 190cm and the ability to play like a midfielder Karnezis is going to be a very difficult match-up if he can build a sufficient tank. Ash is there because he will kick goals.

Great feeling to actually have options, though with our recent coaching history it does create a definite danger of dropping games while we mix it up searching for that perfect combination. Settled sides win games.

Also acknowldge this side is a little short on experience... but if Brisbane is to make finals we simply have to play guys who can actually play footy a bit AND hit a target. Polec, Docherty, Karnezis, Beams and Mayes are the ones that can come in and do that job.

And you cannot play 3 tall fwds with the way the games going unless you've got 3 really good ones. and we don't!
