Still not game to put together a lineup after how humiliatingly wrong I was pre-round 1 last year, but I'm now starting to see Karnezis firm for a spot in the side. Average pre-season last year saw him miss out, but he's been training well and looked the goods in the intraclub, so I'm growing confident he'll secure a spot.

A lot of players not in my starting 22 played well in the intraclub - Longer, Crisp, Karnezis, Yeo, Cornelius. I think all of those players are close enough to get a spot in round 1 if they have a good NAB Cup campaign.

My week 1 (of the finals) team...

Patful Merrett Golby
Adcock Maguire Docherty
Hanley Rich Polec
Bewick Brown Zorko
Banfield Staker McGrath

Ruck: Leunberger, Redden, Rockliffe
Int: Black, Moloney, Beams
Sub: Mayes

Harwood, Green and Bewick the questionable ones to miss out. Harwood will get used, particularly in games where the opposition consistently have a skillful mid resting up forward. But he misses the cut in this side simply because patful, merret, golby, adcock, maquire and docherty will be impossible to consistenly contain (and this has to be a priority for voss and co, brisbane have consistently come in towards the bottom of the rank in transition from defence to attack the last few seasons).

Green and Banfield is a 50-50. Expecting Bewick to play 15+ games this season but he misses out to Karnezis because at 190cm and the ability to play like a midfielder Karnezis is going to be a very difficult match-up if he can build a sufficient tank. Ash is there because he will kick goals.

Great feeling to actually have options, though with our recent coaching history it does create a definite danger of dropping games while we mix it up searching for that perfect combination. Settled sides win games.

Also acknowldge this side is a little short on experience... but if Brisbane is to make finals we simply have to play guys who can actually play footy a bit AND hit a target. Polec, Docherty, Karnezis, Beams and Mayes are the ones that can come in and do that job.

And you cannot play 3 tall fwds with the way the games going unless you've got 3 really good ones. and we don't!

You've actually named Bewick at half forward, so it must have been a close call.;)

No love for Lester? Didn't even make the 'questionable ones to miss out' list.

It's hard to find a bad side through this thread. It emphasises depth but also increases intensity at training cause of the need to improve to secure your team.

I am hoping Polec and Karnezis force their way into the side. It will prove they have made the next step but it will mean they are the players I hope they will be by getting over the others.

I am looking forward to Maloney going hard. Many love his spirit down here, tough and keen and he should add to our clearances but more importantly, show the way for the younger guys.

Lastly, our back 6 is hard to crack but I am really looking for the forward line to start to show how it will look after the big fella finishes. We have so many possible structures it is hard to guess how we will line up in 3 years time. Opportunities are there for the forwards to take.

It's exciting

Very close! haha

I actually don't know a lot about Lester to be honest. Is he a genuine mid? Or more of a play-anywhere utility? Maybe a fight between him and Beams (who I've been hearing a lot of good reports about) for that last bench spot?

He is a genuine utility - has played forward, midfield and defence. He's more a solid contributer than a match winner.

From memory in his two years at the club he has only missed one game from the senior side when fit (although he did miss most of the first year with a foot injury). I wouldn't say it is a big call to leave him out of your preferred 22, but IMO it is a notable omission.

My round 1 side:

FB:Lester Merrett Patfull
HB:Adcock Maguire Golby
C:Hanley Moloney Polec
R:Leuenberger Raines Black
HF:Rockliff Martin Beams
FF:Bewick Brown Polkinghorne
B: Rich Redden Zorko
S: McGrath

Polkinghorne, Lester and Polec have been consistently selected when fit, so they are likely to be there in round 1. Beams is ripping up the track and Bewick finished the season strongly so they get in. Martin, Bewick, Lester if played forward, Polkinghorne and Rockliff (when resting) are all capable marking forwards who can support Browny well enough.

Green is super unlucky to miss out. So is Karnezis, these two could easily hold a spot at some point in the season. Staker could also. I don't see him as an automatic in when fit, he'll earn his spot back.
Docherty, Crisp, Harwood, Longer, Lisle, Cornelius, Bartlett, Yeo, Mayes, Paperone, Banfield, McKeever, Newell, Wrigley..... How good is our depth!?

mcgrath is a lock in the forward, with either green or banfield, beams/zorko on the forward flanks love yeo being out there. Martin>Lisle and moloney is the goods when blacks back we will have a great midfield!

adcock merret patful
hanley maguire golby

rockliff molney rich

beams brown zorko
green martin mcgrath

ruck leuey reddo raines

Int: black, bewick, yeo, cornellius

It will inevitably change again before round 1 but:

Adcock - Merrett - Patfull
Golby - Maguire - Lester
Hanley - Rich - Redden
Beams - Brown - Zorko
Bewick - Martin - Cornelius
Leuie - Moloney - Rocky
Black - Raines - McGrath
Green

Polks as a back has made for an interesting selection headache, hasn't it? Looked comfortable back there.

Martin has stamped himself as a first 22 player with tonight's performance. Outshone the other options in the forwardline.

Martin deserves a spot over lisle, dont see vossy playing them both unless leuey is out

Haviing seen most of the team play, and while it's early, here's another go:

FB: Adcock Merrett Patfull
HB: Golby Maguire Yeo
C: Karnezis Raines Rich
HF: Zorko Martin Rockliff
FF: McGrath Brown Cornelius
R: Leuenberger Redden Moloney
INTER: Hanley Beams Bewick Green (s)

While the only question mark is on Leuenberger at this point, I don't think Black will be ready come Round 1. Might as well wait for the home game next week to play him.
But this was as far as I could do, it's really tough picking teams on who you think should be selected as compared to those who will probably be selected. Side could change with players like Lester, Polkinghorne and Lisle forcing their way into it.

Really good team there. Wouldn't change any personnel but mainly positions but it is modern footy and most blokes will at least play in a few positions on game day bar the KPP's. Well done

B Golby Merrett Patfull
HB Adcock Maguire Yeo
C Rich Rockliff Hanley
HF Bewick Brown Zorko
F McGrath Martin Green
R Leuenberger Moloney Raines
I Black Beams Redden
S Karnezis
E Lester Polec Polkinghorne

Docherty, Harwood and Crisp just missing out.

This is my second Round 1 team. Not much has changed since the last one. Yeo replaces Docherty because I really, really rate Yeo and think he deserves a spot. I would prefer to have Docherty in the side as well though. Karnezis also replaces Staker as the sub who I think needs to come back through the reserves.

Really wish I could fit Lester, Polec, Docherty, Harwood and Crisp in the side but they all will get games this year.

Lisle does nothing for me and Acorn has the spark and clean hands we need.
Unfortunately we don't have any real wow factor freakish players.

I do like your team Rubix

Leuey Moloney Redden

Others: Black, Martin, Raines, Beams, Yeo, Docherty, Bewick, Hayes, Lester, Polkinghorne, Banfield, Lisle, Longer, Staker, Harwood.

Shit! That's 33 players that I wouldn't mind playing on regular basis. When did this happen???

that's a pretty strong bench

Several years of thoughtful, targeted recruiting, not that many in the media noticed.

O
Well if you ask Hammo we haven't recruited well... Josh Green and Tom Rockliff both found themselves on our list somehow.
Osmosis I believe.

B rownie reckoned Pepperoni is being seriously considered for round 1.

Looks a likely type. I wouldn't be against it tbh, we can stretch the Bulldogs a lot with a tall forward line.

Did Polec play in the NAB round last night? I must admit I wasn't looking out for him too much, but god I want him to come along, he's really what we need to get our young team really going. Pacey, clever outside player who can kick goals.
