Griffiths did a good job last year on roo from memory. They also dont need him with Rance, Grimes and Chaplin.

I would take either (both) Browns, either Delaneys, Griffiths even Pears if need be. Desperately need 2 KPDs. Maybe even a third young (U18) one to develop.

I don't mind that, because we aren't stealing from the future. We still get our draft picks. Getting a young bloke like Adams isn't too much of a top up anyway. But in trading "favorites" it shouldn't leave the team dysfunctional ( if it isn't already ).

Judging by what occurred in the first qtr last Sunday, i'm wasn't impressed by Dal's second half redemption..
When the heat was on, he went missing as usual..(season 2013)
Would be a great fit for a number of clubs vying for a flag next year, in exchange for a pick around 12-18..

Brown has played some good footy, having watched him play countless times since his debut..
The luxury of having foxtel for the last ten years..
I'm more concerned that he walked under a ladder or crossed a black cat, because he struggles to be injury free..

All the free agency moves shuffled the draft around so and Adelaide gave up picks so we would have originally had:

12: Kristian Jaksch
13: Jesse Lonergan
36: Tanner Smith
55: Tim Sumner
75: Lewis Pierce

then we traded for Lee +24 +43 leaving us with:
13, 24, 36, 43, 55 , 75

then we got Hickey +25 +47 , giving up 13, 36, and 55
So 24, 25, 43, 47, 75

Trent Dennis Lane for 47
24, 25, 43, 75

Then the trade Cripps + 47 for 40 and 44.
gave us 24, 25, 40, 43, 75

So from 2 first round picks and a second and a third, we got 3 second round picks , and a third and 3 players and lost one player.

Was thinking that a couple weeks ago. I'm torn on the Dal trade as he should finish a Saint. You only have to look at Kosi giving Joey his jumper and the speech for the 200 games, shows the kids how much to value one another.
However if it is best for Dal and the club, Collingwood would go for it if Daisy goes.

Brooks and Watts both got very injured in their first seasons. Both impact injuries. You cannot predict that. Big blokes take time, they were both big blokes, and Brooks was never the same after the knee, except for his Round 22 2006 cameo. Watts never played another senior game after suffering a spiral fracture in his lower leg.

And in 1986, you'd have better chance winning the lottery than nailing your draft pick - no one knew what they were doing.

And finally, if we'd kept the picks, who knows who we would have selected with them.

The Brooks trade was confusing at the time and a howler when you look at all the facts. He'd been drafted the year before, he didn't play a game for Port Adelaide and our recruiting staff had three picks before he got taken in the draft. We grossly overpaid for him.

If we were so set on taking a ruck, we should've just used pick 6 on taking the highest rated ruck in the draft. Depending on our recruiting staff's decision that would been Hamish McIntosh at pick 9 or Jason Laycock at pick 10.

But all this is too late now. I would love to know the reasoning why St Kilda made that deal though.

Yeah they seem like random occurances.
But Statistically big trades for StKilda aren't as successful as early draft picks. I don't know what its like overall for the AFL , If I could get rid of my wife I could spend the weekend working it out.

I'd rather look forward than look backwards although it has been interesting understanding and analysing what we have done, why we have done it, and what we could have done better. But we are where we are and but for a kick and a toepoke we would be a dual premiership side coming to the end of its window but we're not.

I have read with interest other posters' opinions on what we need and what I will say is more or less the same. There are so many needs but let's talk about our 1st draft pick for end of this year. I also think we need to look at this over a 2 year period as we are not going to get everything we need in one draft.

Forwards
Assuming we are still pick 3 and he is available then I would go Boyd. That then sorts out the forwards for mine. Boyd, White, Lee along with Siposs, Markworth, Saad, Minchington, Milera. If Boyd is not available then we would go best next available which would be a mid and I will talk more about that later. Also if Boyd is not available then we still need a power forward. Forward line not complete for mine without one. So the list is not looking too bad for the future.

Defenders
Problem area. We need at least 2 KPD's who can play now and 1 to develop. WCE Brown is 1, Frawley, Griffiths, I could go on. A state league KPD is another option here. Roberton has been a blessing in disguise, Geary, Wright & Webster both of whom I rate highly. The issue is Gwilt, Gilbert, Dempster, Simpkin. What do we do with them? If we want to trade for a mid then perhaps we need to give up one of these players. I don't think another club would take Sam Fisher based on age and output so I assume he will retire end of next year. Finally as i said earlier we would want a 3rd KPD for development a la Lewis Pierce in the ruck. Lever no. Ferguson? Staley? Not sure....

Rucks
This is probably the one area we don't need to address. For better or for worse we have McEvoy & Hickey with Stanley in support and Pierce developing. I think we also have other more urgent priorities which means nothing will change here....

Midfield
Problem area. Now if we couldn't get Boyd then our 1st draft pick would be an elite mid, (trusting the recruitment team to make the right call), either inside or out. I reckon they have to have a bigger body who can play straight away. But it depends on best available. We need both inside and outside. We also need someone like a Taylor Adams - someone ready made who can join with Steven, Armitage, Ross, Newnes as well as Montagna, Dal Santo, Hayes etc. Maybe that is trading our 2nd pick plus one of the defenders I mentioned earlier. Curren & Ledger? The next 8 weeks will determine if they are playing at the club next year, traded, or delisted. You would think Curren would be elevated to the main list next year. Saunders & Murdoch have shown something also. I still think we need another 4 or 5 mids including at least 2 elite. If no Boyd then use both our 1st draft picks for 13 & 14 to get these 2 elite pacey mids that can work with Steven, Ross, Armitage. I think we need express pace through the midfield. Ross I am happy with although a bit slow he will become that great inside midfielder like his cousin. You do need a mix but we need more pace.

Interesting that Watters was quoted at looking at players under 26. We need players across all of those age groups. Probably a 24/5 year old mid, a 21/2 year old mid both of whom can play now and impact the game as well as the 18 year old mid who can play straight away say 15 games in debut season, (like Wright, Vlastuin, even though they are more HBF but you get the idea). That's where Adams would be good and I'm hoping we pull out all the stops. He might not want to come to us.

I've been impressed by our list management team as well as our recruitment team. I am sure that wiser heads than me have looked at this and they know exactly what we need and have identified the players they want to take us forward.

I don't think the Brooks trade was confusing at the time at all... Barry was a highly rated junior ruckman who had spent a year in one of the most highly regarded programs in the AFL (at the time). He was behind Primus & Lade & had obviously shown enough at SANFL level to be considered trade worthy to the Saints at the time.

Barry is a perfect example of a bloke who couldn't fully overcome the mental side of a knee reco... Giving up both 6 & 31??? That's a different debate.

Having said all that, it would have been nice having McIntosh as our #1 ruck during the mid-late 2000's.

If Brooks had not done his knee he could have been the final piece in the puzzle that we needed in that 2004/2005 period.

He was apparently very highly rated in a strong draft the year before and is only 1cm shorter than Mac, but was far quicker and also considerably better when played forward, I believe. If he'd had a good run with injury I expect he would have had a similar sort of career to the likes of David Hale and Hamish McIntosh, with their ability to play either in the ruck or up forward equally effectively. I remember seeing him in our intra-club game during his first preseason with us and was very impressed with him leading out of FF. Was big, lead well and marked very strongly overhead. Apparently kicked it well too.

Seriously some optimism around how we'll go this off-season.

If we acquire a ready to play KPD and draft a ready to made player of any position with our first pick I think we'd doing well. Also adding a mature clearance winning midfielder would be good.

But we're not going to go down the 2000 off-season route (adding Gehrig, Hamill, Voss, Capuano, Callaghan, Lawrence & Gale).

I think people were pretty incredulous at the time.
The way I see it, the Ego that was running the club at the time was into him when he was drafted, ( but they wanted DalSanto, so they hoped he'd slide to Gooses pick ), and the Ego just couldn't let him go.

Assuming the word is that GWS will take Boyd I'd look at trading picks 3 and 22ish for Adams and 10 and then hope we can grab one of Billings/Crouch/Dunstan/Kelly.

What are people seeing in Griffiths that Im not? I'd be just as keen on Astbury.
