Club could do worse than draft a Falcon every year, they're tough blighters
Indeed.

Cotter's take from over on the Phantom Draft board:
He does indeed fit the age bracket.

Big strong kid from the Geelong Falcons. Strong overhead and a very good judge of the footy in the air. Kicks goals, uses his body very well. He will need to tidy up his kicking and a few other things, but apart from that he is an interesting prospect. Just needs to round his game off more.

I'd say he is an outside chance to be taken in the second round, but more likely a third round or on wards chance.

And Knightmare's:
Strong bodied, strong marking midfielder but with that Geelong Falcons midfield absolutely loaded like no TAC midfield that we've seen he mainly plays forward.

Draftable and as a late pick could be worth a shot but it's difficult to know just how effective he is as a midfielder with most of his time spent forward which makes his game trickier than most to evaluate with that small sample through the midfield.

Please don't tell Uncle B that they are 195cm/95kg's :D
Be nice

I just like my key backs ;)

Actually I'm onto left-field mids currently, specifically Matthew Boag from the Geelong Falcons as a later pick if we manage to somehow snag a key position player and pace early. He's 18, 185cm and 90kg. The takes of two blokes I trust from the Phantom Drafts board are below:

Can't have too many strong-bodied mids

Indeed.

As Knightmare has mentioned, he has played mainly up forward.

I certainly think he has what it takes to be a big time ball winner and strong clearance player as a midfielder.

I think he'd be comfortably rated a second round prospect by most if he was playing more of a permanent midfield role. :thumbsu:

I certainly think you's should be snapping Boyd up immediately if his available at your pick. I think this draft is fairly strong for midfielders, particularly for inside types. So you's would be able to get a promising inside midfielder with your second and third round picks.

A mature ager like Cockie would come in very handy.

We could do with a strong-bodied mid who can play as a forward. Milera's a tad soft, Saad is not a mid and Ledger and Curren aren't getting a game. What's his pace like?

If we don't we are stupid....

We're all over Boyd in here. But then again, isn't everybody?

On my phantom draft since I've been mentioned.

I create my phantom draft to be representative of what clubs are thinking as largely an estimate of what each club will do on draft day.

It's in my power rankings where I show I exactly where I rate each player.
My system is largely if picking is largely based firstly on my power rankings. I'd take the guy highest on my list, in the scenario I have confidence the guy highest on my list will be available at a later selection I'd then just pick that next guy down on my list to ensure I get the most players listed high on my rankings.

If looking left field. While he won't be left field for long Matthew Merlo is a genuine 1st rounder as that strong bodied midfielder.

Brendan Abbott is made of some good stuff as another strong bodied mid. Jake Greiser is another strong body to look out for. Either late draft/rookie could be interesting. Boag is in that conversation.

Ben Moloney in the VFL for Collingwood has been excellent through the midfield and hasn't been spoken about enough as an option with more development in him.

Came across this gem, not sure of the source's bonafides, but hey...

http://boundforglorynews.com/jacob-chisari-leads-list-of-puzzling-vic-country-omissions/
Unfortunately the success may have pushed some of their talented players to the back of the queue given the amount of depth through the midfield. While James Tsitas and Lewis Taylor were away in Europe, Matthew Boag was tearing it up in the Falcons midfield. They returned and Boag moved onto a forward flank, immediately having an impact booting five goals.

I thought his pace was good to an extent without being outstanding.

What's happened to Ledger? I remember a while back when he looked fairly promising.

I don't think anyone is going to disagree with you on Merlo. Kids a big time ball winner, uses it well and is a strong overhead mark. Has really came on this year.

Moloney is one I have not seen a great deal of, but he has been impressive based off what I have managed to see. Do you think he is a genuine chance?

Ledger has been playing well in the VFL but it appears Scott Watters does not know of the 'VFL'. Should be getting a game.

On Moloney he's a late/rookie possible if he continues improving.

I like him because he is one of those who has come up from the lower leagues as a guy who would continue to improve every year and has had no trouble with the adjustment to the pace of the next level. It's always a positive sign and suggests further upside to his game and likely an easy enough transition to the next level as Isaac Smith and Kyle Martin did before him. He isn't in that same conversation for talent but I bring up those two names because they worked their way up through the lower levels in a similar way.
It just comes down to whether he can continue to improve over the second half of the season to really put forward his case.

I can see Tom Ledger in another club Guernsey next year dominating.... If he plays anything like he did in the 2011 NAB Cup he'll have a good career not sure why he isn't getting a gig in our weak midfield. Had high hopes for him after his first year performances looked the goods but since Watters has been here looks like he is out of favour.

Merlo: I just can't bring myself to cheers for a Xavs bloke. Just... Can't
Abbott: God I hope is nickname is "Postie"... Or "Tony"
Greiser: I got nuthin'
Moloney: Two b&fs and a third is encouraging, but in Werribee's 2s. Only with a late/rookie pick for mine.

I don't know about dominating...

If you're all bored this weekend, wander on over to www.vafa.com.au and check out the u23 VAFA v SAAFL game live on VAFAtv... You never know, you might spy a speculative pick or two...

that was hardly a great nab cup. people were amazed just because it was the first kid who had come in, for a long long long time that put his head over the footy in his first game/first season

compare that performance to the likes of some of the GWS kids or dyson heppell

And where was most of those GWS kids along with Heppell taken in that draft? Ledger looked alright for the draft pick he was taken at.

Should say Gold Coast kids as he was taken the year before GWS entered the draft.

i'd say its a bit of a pecking order. jones, curren are ahead of him. then you have players like newnes, wright, ross who have justified their selection

i agree he should be played at some point though, especially if his recent form (excluding the weekend) holds up

i am just comparing kids in general in their first season, not really around that time.

the draft pick a player is taken at is irrelevant. we are after building up as much good talent as possible. its all about spots on the list and the quality of player

TLedge had fair few Hammy injuries during his first year as well, I do think he should be playing regular football in his 3rd year though..

Yeah but Newnes and Wright are not midfielders, jones is finished and Curren is a rookie. Ross is a head of him but only because they are different players.

I think it is Steven that is ahead of him and that is it.

i dont know about the rest of you guys but i think having Knightmare posting in this thread is pretty friggin sweet!!!!!

Its about time. I've spent far too many waking hours pestering him, cotter101 and Chris25... ;)
