If we get say Bruce and Delaney we sure as shit won't need all of Fisher, Gwilt, Gilbo, Simpkin, Stanley, Dempster and Roberton back there with them, especially if we're also looking to find spots for the likes of Geary, Wright, Newnes, Webster, Murdoch, Siposs and anyone we draft this year. That would be enough for more than two whole backlines, all of whom you could make a strong case for playing (either due to form or for development purposes)!

When fit and in form, we could field two pretty decent and competitive backlines with that group.

Geary to replace Jones as a tagger. Sipposs won't make it. Gilboto wing. Roberton stays as does wright.

My Viv Michie hypothetical is a 3-way trade

Viv Michie to StKilda
Tom Ledger to West Coast
WCE 3rd round selection to Fremantle

Fremantle IMO would not want another slow inside mid when they already have Mundy & Barlow (& to an extent Crowley)
WCE do need an inside mid to help out Priddis & Scooter now that DK has retired, which should free up Gaff from the constant tag
Michie is 185cm & 85kg.... I wouldn't say no

I'd rather take a punt on Michie (who is a proven ball magnet in the WAFL) than throw a dart at a 3rd selection

Fisher/Gwilt are better on a flank. We have literally nobody else to play key position and every team needs at least two. If there's any team that can guarantee game time it's us.

On this Michie talk, I have heard some things that are very interesting, for lack of a better term. All I will say for now is one young Freo mid who lives in Victoria is not happy at Freo. One such player may or may not be involved here. I'll let you guys put this together.

Exactly, who do we squeeze out for Delaney? Can someone give me a run-down on Delaney, his form and how he goes in the seniors. Haven't seen any of him.

I'd rather keep Simpkin. He showed he could take that 3rd tall in 2012 when he had an extended run in the seniors. Injuries haven't been kind to him either.

One of Fisher/Gwilt can play on a flank but not both if we want to play Bruce and Delaney. It would be perfect to get both of them as Fisher may retire at the end of 2014 anyway and so we're back at square one at the end of next year, albeit with a couple more KPD FA options. I would love both, I just don't think we can promise both game time with the list exactly the way it is next year.

I'd rather Hurley than Delaney, but it all depends on that ASADA investigation.

As for back set ups... You would think that, from the current stock, Roberton and Dempster are instant inclusions. Gilbert's been in prime form since he came back, so you'd include him at the moment. I have doubts over whether Chips can be effective next year, but you'd think that if he keeps his fitness and is injury free, he'd be given a spot. That's already 4 pretty tall defenders, but 4 that aren't really suited to playing KPD.

Geary will most likely play next year on the wing and through the midfield in a tagging role. One back position will likely be taken by one of Webster, Newnes, Wright, or even Dunell if he can break into the team, as a spot where those younger, more defensive mid fielders can develop. Siposs should be played as a forward (and is best 22 when he isn't injured, IMO), as should Stanley.

That leaves Gwilt and Simpkin (unless I've forgotten someone). I think that Roberton took Gwilt's role in the backline, and while Gwilt has been played out of position for two years now, it may be best for all parties if he moved on next season. He's come a very long way since joining the Saints, but he may find a better suitor elsewhere. Collingwood, for instance, might be interested in him, given that they're likely to lose Shaw, and Maxwell doesn't have much left in him.

A few pages ago, someone (sorry, can't recall who!) suggested putting Simpkin in a defensive forward role, which I think could suit him. He's got good enough skills for it, and could apply a lot of pressure to otherwise loose defenders.

Which is why we get Bruce/Delaney + rookie a state level KPD like Sully or Tippett as back up.
