The problem is that settling is precisely what we did.

Fitness coach gone...oh well just promote the guy under him.
Key forward/ruck gone...oh well we've got (the unproven) Jenkins
No draft picks...oh well let's promote a rookie (Callinan, Laird, Hartigan)
Assistant coach suspended...oh well we know the gameplan
Pre-season training...nah let's take it easy lads
Players available in Free Agency...oh well our list is awesome

That complacency ensuing from being less than a kick from a grand final is exactly why we are in the mess we are in. Accept anything other than ultimate success and you only encourage mediocrity.

I don't think we settled. Last year you don't even know who we chased for free agency, except Pearce. And all of that was stuffed up because Tippett was still deciding... then we were stuck with him on our list until after trade period.

That wasn't settleing, that was karma biting the AFC on the arse for Trigg being a dick.

I don't even think pre-season was taking it easy. After an unsettles off season the preseason was more team oriented to build team spirit after an absolutely shocking offseason. You see that in the photos of the preseason drills. A lot of team focused activities. Trigg's stupidity compromised this preseason. No matter how much Harper and Chapman say the playing group was quarantined from the front office bullshit, it jus isn't true and it is impossible.

No one is accepting the prelim as an ultimate achievement. And many are mistaking the fact that it was a pleasant change from the previous 2 years with the AFC being happy with the result and leaving it at that.

So you're happy not winning premierships & contending?

A performance hungry culture wouldn't tolerate poor game plans that fall apart in finals

You say we shouldn't settle for prelims, but the fact you're arguing this point strongly suggests you are happy with the odd fluke prelim

If you're happy with that, fine, but you shouldn't criticise others not so easily satisfied.

No one ever said "we exist for the occasional prelim"

We've still got the option of putting a big price tag on their head and getting them in the rookie draft.

I wouldn't go anywhere near X.Ellis, hasn't shown much to date to suggest he's anything above an average footballer, and that's when he can get on the field which doesn't happen all that often.

Of the others you've mentioned, Franklin won't come to us, Thomas looks like he'll stay or go to Carlton (stay in Melbourne at least). Sylvia maybe, but has mentioned he wants to stick with the Dees. I don't mind Betts, but would like us to get something else with Betts being the second big get we get this off season, to do that, we've got to chase some other guys who are out of contract and are interested in $$$.

You twist words around and don't read stuff in context. Have a read back over threads from last year. The threads predicting where we would end up. Hardly anyone predicted top 8 at the beginning. Do you think it is stupid to be pleased with outperforming expectations? It is possible to be happy with out resting on your laurels as leaving it at that. If you can't be happy with an improved performace then your life must be miserable. There is somehow this myth that is being perpertrated that if you are happy somehow you are not striving for the next level. That is pure unadulterated bullshit. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging minor goals along the way. And doing so does not mean that your have lost sight of the ultimate goal. You cannot tell me that the team members of the '04-'07 teams were not hungry for the ultimate prize. That would be just stupid to argue.
Now that Neil Craig is gone the game plan has changed. Some of the players have definitely been "Craiged", you see it in their automatic response to pressure and tackling, but that will dissipate over time.

Being happy =/= being satisfied and patting everyone on the back ad neauseum.

Rationalising disappointment after the fact makes it easy to spread blame here there and everywhere. Trotting out the line "satisfied with mediocrity" is an excuse. It is laying the blame everywhere except where it belongs; we were not good enough on prelim final day". Questioning hunger is bullshit. None of the players would have been content with the result of any of the prelims. They would have all been hungry for the win. Even Massie getting torn a new one would have been hungry for the win.

Yes it is. But if you have the option of two desirable clubs and one is offering substantially more wouldn't you move? We've lost players to undesirable clubs for more cash and apparently that had nothing to do with us.

For 2 of the 7 years it *may* have been a good plan . ie to break the flood. But the game moved on. We did probably keep the coach 18 months too long when it became clear he couldn't adapt to the changing game.

But I didn't see anyone partying about prelim final losses. And infact I didn't see our recruiting team rest on their laurels either. They have kept delivering player to build us up for our next shot at finals.

But this is digressing. If a poster puts us on par with Richmond over the past 15 years (which is clearly ludicrous), if anyone points to the evidence, then the naysayers trot out the 'celebrating mediocrity' line. This is a diversion. If someone wants to rate us on par with Richmond, that's up to them. They can choose to be stupid. But don't come back with the mediocrity line because everyone wants the ultimate prize and no one at the club (apart from maybe Trigg looking after his position) is just sitting back saying "Well, that is good enough".

Recognizing minor goals along the way =/= being content with not winning.

That's the thing, one of the keys to the sustained success at Geelong has been holding on to players for significantly less money. I have some first hand info on everything the cats have done for Motlop and his family, it will take a miracle to move him.

Disagree.

The reality is, a huge part of why we didn't win won under Craig was sheer bad luck. If Hentschel doesn't get injured, if Biglands doesn't do a knee, if Roo doesn't get parvo, etc...

But they were the uncontrollables, what did we do about the things we could control?

McGregor and Perrie were never going to get us anywhere, yet we persisted with them. The same group players constantly failed to stand up under the pressure of finals - what did we do with them?

We've been good, and we've gone close, but, since Blighty, we've always lacked the balls to make the hard decisions that move us from a good team, to a great one.


It continued last year, and it's continuing this year. It was bloody obvious that Callinan and Petrenko shouldn't have played in that prelim, yet they were picked because they 'deserved' to, because they'd helped get us there.

That failure to make the hard decision, with soft justification, is exactly the reason we haven't won anything meaningful for the last 15 years.
