Its also reminder that this is a dangerous sport at times and if you do have kids or friends playing the game, make sure at least they have a helmet and all safety gear.

Yeah. BF. A beacon of integrity in this day and age. Who woulda thunk it.

Anyways, thoughts with Hughes, his family and the cricketers and staff that attended to him. Very crossable thing crossed for him.
I was hoping he was going to take Clarke's spot and make a name for himself, very upsetting.

Just been told by a mate he's undergoing emergency surgery as we speak.

Head knock not heartattack.

Yep, placed in an Induced Coma and operated on to reduce pressure on brain.

Yeah I wasn't allowed to say, but it's out there now.

Bloody hell.

Best wishes to Hughesy and his family.

Abbott would be feeling terrible. Also needs support and reassurance it's not his fault. It was a fair bouncer and Hughes went to hook. Copped it square on the jaw from what I saw.

Terrible.

One of my best mates is a brain surgeon at St Vincent's, will try and find out some info....

Post contains speculation - I am not a doctor.

If he has pressure on the brain, it seems likely he's suffered a brain bleed of some sort. Subdural haematoma maybe, which is a bleed between the dura mater (the brain's protective membrane) and the brain itself.

An increase in intracranial pressure means brain surgery and that probably means a craniotomy, which is removing a bone flap to allow access to the brain itself to drain the blood and decrease the pressure. Pretty standard surgery in the case of a brain haemorrhage, but it does have significant recovery time and is obviously very dangerous.

Shitty situation for Phil to be in. IMO it will be a miracle if he returns to play top level cricket.

I think with most craniotomy's, doesn't it takes several years before the area removed returns to full strength, ie the bone etc?

ITs a miracle if he comes out of this alive, even if he does that, he won't be allowed to face a cricket ball again, with that spot weakened for quite a number of years.

No idea on full recovery times, ie rehabilitation and strengthening and all that. The immediate recovery is pretty hairy though. He will likely spend significant time in ICU and under observation, he'll have daily CT scans to check the progression of his brain's recovery, and you'd think he'd spend a fair bit of time intubated/ventilated while the docs let his brain recover.

I think you are right though, and that it's likely he's faced his last cherry. People don't just bounce back to high level sporting careers after stuff like this.

I've said this before, but you know a shitload of people.

First thing a mate of mine who works for Bris health pretty much said was we have to hope that it wasn't a bleed or a depressed fracture from the impact.

Then the news came out they were doing surgery to release pressure on the brain... not good.

Horrible news. First priority is that he pulls through and makes a full recovery. If he does, hopefully he will be able to cope with his dream career being cut short

There's some hope.

Jesse Ryder was placed in an induced coma and had brain surgery, he's made a full recovery and is playing top level cricket again.

After this incident, and IIRC, Mitch Johnson got a South African also wearing a helmet, right behind the ear and drew blood, you would reckon the old helmets need a bit of a redesign, they are not doing what they are supposed to, next thing you know they will be banning bouncers, best wishes to Phil for a good result

I wouldn't say theres anything wrong with the helmets TBH. It would likely be more dangerous to increase the coverage which would limit the ability to move the head.

The helmets cover a fair bit, just unfortunately the way a bouncer works theres a chance it can clip you under where the helmet ends. Helmet's are effective in combatting 99% of deliveries but the way that the bouncer goes its just not possible to prevent all cases of damage.

Any chance helmets will be changed somehow after this
