At this early stage I can't see us breaking into the top 8 with so many team competing with us around there. We have the hardest draw and no certain CHF at this time. I would be stoked if we finished 10th but I can see us having another dream draft next year with the academy boys and a very likely top 10 draft pick. Dawson will be a great addition on the HFF (my preferred) or HBF, but still early times and he and along with the rest of the Lions academy will have to work a lot harder next season. Hopefully they haven't gotten too ahead of themselves after the acadamies poster boy Tickner didn't get drafted.

Worth noting that Lachie Weller is not eligible to be taken by GC under the academy system and so he will go into the draft with everyone else. He moved up from Tassie with his family when his brother was drafted and has not been in the zone long enough.

I know we all feel very sorry for out bretheren from down the road :)

Weller is a bit of an all around midfielder but nothing that really screams elite but similarly not a lot of weaknesses either. He played mostly on the outside at the Champs as a winger. He did not play as onball as much at the Champs as I expected this year but when he went inside he did okay. More of an outside in player but when he is a top ager next year I am expecting him to maybe reverse that and to be a true onballer. Skills are solid but nothing to write home about and he will get enough of the ball without being a true magnet. He was very good at under 16 level and when he goes up against his own age group he could well stand out again next year.

I would think he would be somewhere between 15 and 25 if guys were picked now.

I expect it would only happen if he retained eligibility for the Champs next year which I doubt he would given he played both years and did not miss a heap of games due to injury.

Looks like you're right.

Prior to a Club including an eligible player(s) on its Primary List in accordance with
Rule 14.4(a):
(i) On or before the date determined by the AFL, the Club shall submit a list of draft eligible Club Academy Players to the AFL using the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 39A it wishes to consider for inclusion on its Primary List, all of whom must represent either New South Wales or Queensland, as the case may be, at any underage national football championships in that year or any other competition as determined by the AFL, unless determined otherwise by the AFL;

Darcy Cameron-Reeves stood out for me as a top up player this year. He was captain or vice-captain in the younger age groups too IIRC. Just midfield height but not a bad build.

I agree he should definitely be one to watch for us. I rate him a bit below my 3 favourites but he is an inside out player with a bit of potential.

How does Hammelmann rate compared to the other KPF in this draft?

Given he is in the AIS I would suggest he rates pretty well. There are a couple who might have more potential but no more than that and he could easily be the best of the lot. There are a couple of things to work on but the kid has a lot going for him.

Thanks for the info Quigley. He sounds extremely promising, I'm very happy that we get a free crack at him along with Dawson who plenty on this board rate as a top ten pick.

So if there were a number of acadamy lads we wanted - how would it work? Can we get them all?

Short answer is yes.

There is a bidding system but effectively you only need to match another club's bid with your next available draft selection. If you have 3 players who all have second round bids placed for them by other clubs, you would only need to use your 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounders.

I insist we start the 2020 draft thread now. There are some gun 11 year olds around and we need to discuss whether they might be mummy's boys and want to go home.

Having said that, a deep draft of KPF talent next year means the guys we have may really know they have just a season to show their progress because even losing Browny it is hard to see them all staying on. Especially if one or two highly rated ones come out of the 2014 draft.

And room on the list with consideration to who or what else you hope to either draft or rookie yeah?
