I think it's safe to say Chad Wingard broke the curse of the number 6, also Jackson Macrae doesn't seem like a dud

Pies will be seeing him as a long term investment and will make every effort to ensure he gets himself right.

I would be very worried that he essentially misses the most important year of his physical and AFL development, yes. Not being able to run since August, probably won't be able to run properly until May - his baseline fitness alone will be poor.
I missed a year with a knee injury at 23 and I didn't truly recover until the season when I was almost 26, as I lost a lot from being out 9-10 months. It put me back probably 2 - 2.5 years in total.

The thing that makes AFL players pretty much the superior athletes in all of sport is the way they combine endurance with strength, durabililty and skill. He's going to lack one (fitness), not showing good signs of another(durability), and will become off touch with another (skills).

We may have "dodged a bullet" with Scharenburg but with Jack Billings, St Kilda will still have to be very careful and make sure the conservative route is taken, at least until he is ~24. He's had his share of injuries, so it should be a concern. His ability to play through these issues (3rd quarter vs SA, 1st half vs Country, whole games with Oakleigh) should be taken as a huge positive, but we aren't out of the woods yet.

Schazza is going to be a gun. I don't care how long it takes if the quality is there. Collingwood and hawthorn probably were the most likely to have done well out of the draft still. I'm still concerned with the fragility of Billings ATM anyway. I'm not expecting much for three years or so but I think he should at least be a Schnieder type but maybe with more upside if his body holds up.

I played and now coach American Football, which has many similarities in preparation.
Our S&C coach always tells us he wants a year to work with youngsters with knee, ankle or calf injuries. Vast majority of these are a result of muscular imbalance - most of the population have this but it never affects them as they don't put their bodies under strain on a daily basis, and over half the population even have one leg slightly longer than the other! Elite athletes develop their physical abilities around or despite this, usually building so much muscle that the body makes up for the imbalance. This can result in joints being pulled a few mm and that's enough to cause something like a cartilage issue or recurring calf issues near the ankle. Often it results in back problems, as the back and neck muscles actually absorb the strain.
Our kids team is u16 to u19 but kids start working with adult strength coach from 17, he wants to iron out their issues then and the kids rarely play in the year 18-19 as they're just as likely to get injured as achieve anything else.

Therefore on the assumption all AFL players get great treatment, I would be less concerned by someone with niggling joint issues. Bursitis would be more concerning as it would come and go, flare up etc and can be hard to treat long-term. Any stress issues or load-bearing, also a concern. And once a shoulder has been out it will never be the same. Those are the ones I'd worry about.

Serious suggestion but what about Cam Delaney?

Is a very nice hbf in the mould of Roberton (CD is listed at 194cms and 91kgs) who will only be 22 at the end of the year.

If we are looking at trading out the likes of Gilbert and Gwilt to improve our draft position, there is every chance we could get Delaney Jnr on the cheap as he is a long way behind the likes of Hansen, Firrito, Dal, McDonald, Wright, Atley, MacMillan and Mullet in North's back flank rotation due to his awkward size.

They want him to play key post but he is much better used as the Sam Fisher type 3rd tall. He would get that chance with us if we are looking at trading our older 3rd tall/half backs out.

Thoughts?

Cam Delaney is a genuine CHB/FB, he's a big kid, taller than his brother.

i'm starting to think this might be rhys stanleys year where he really breaks out and plays some consistent footy. think he might silence some of his critics that have called him over-hyped

akin to gwilts 2010/gearys 2011.
God I hope you're right. I'd love to see him played in his right role and supported through a number of games to build his confidence.

I'm inclined to agree, he just needs 15+ games in that forward/2nd ruck role and I think we will be in a good position to point out how wrong people were.

If he performs like he did at the start of 2012 then I will be happy but I think he could easily do better than that due to his body being more mature now. It wouldn't surprise me if he kicks 30-40 goals this year while also doing well in the ruck.

Always been a supporter of Rhys but if he doesn't "Break out" or have a very good year this season i'm not sure he ever will.

Rhys is still relatively young (especially "for his height") and hasn't played a lot of games at any level in the past 4 or so years, so we just need him to continue progressing steadily. If he kicks 25 goals this year and 3 in at least one or two games and starts playing really good halves, instead of really good quarters, we're doing well.

He will have had a very good year if he can kick 25 goals and take a % of the ruck duels as the rotations drop down. We might need to mark him against Leigh Brown more than Nick Riewoldt if I'm seeing the proposed role right. He still looks like he doesn't settle in front of goals but is laser like when field kicking. If he gets his confidence up the sky is the limit.

I still think he is a better prospect than Shaun Hampson, who apparently is still a useful player.

Helllll no. So top 5 pick (likely our 1st rounder) and a first round draftee in Acres for Fyfe? Fyfe is elite in a lot of areas, but his kicking is a liability.
Your gotta have the ball first get it off to someone like Billings who can use it

I like Fyfe but wouldn't give up what it would take to get him over to St Kilda.

Especially when the suggested (Acres) could be a very good player himself, if it wasn't for injury could have went Top 10 and first round pick well that could a very low pick where we could pick up another elite youngster likely KPP.

I reckon if you took that trade to Freo they would say go away and come back when your serious

Exactly. I'd prefer to throw a good offer at Paddy Dangerfield next year as a FA (Although not sure he'd come here).
