Yeah Clem Smith, it's not that I don't think he's a great player, I just don't think he's up there with Wright/McCartin/Durdin. His draft stock is right up there, but I don't think he's the best or second best player in the draft.

Sorry to keep nit picking but Durdin over Goddard then?

Would he be our lock in CHB while we develop Lee, White and Longer/Hickey/Stanley up forward AR (after Riewoldt)

FB - Bruce + Delaney
HB - Durdin
Foll - Hickey
CHF - White
FF - Lee + Longer/Stanley

?

Then why wait at all? Why not do it all in one night?

It's a great experience for those youngsters who aren't taken in the draft as well as the mature age state candidates to get a run at an AFL club, even if it is for only a week or a few weeks. Also gives clubs a chance to put them through their paces and see if there's anything they might have missed.

Often there are question marks in front of players who don't get picked up in the draft.
Example: Garlett - not taken after training with Essendon (clever Essendon ), Nathan Carrol -not taken after training with the Saints ( Clever Saints), or on the other hand Mav Weller taken after training with the Saints.
It could be harder for these guys to get their second/last chance if the opportunity to train with the clubs for a few weeks wasn't there.

Was being rhetorical, I'm in favour of time to train at the clubs. Just making the point that the four day wait is a no-man's land, either get the drafts all out of the way or leave time for a proper trial period.

Right now Goddard over Durdin, just forgot to mention Hugh in the group. Hugh's very talented (Paddy was very happy with his work as a team-mate) and Durdin has injury issues to start off the year. As for "nit picking", mate I'll always love to discuss the draft! Don't think you could lock down anything, but in that set up Goddard could be more handy. He'd be able to play both ends well (Hurley type, except he'd play well more than just once) and would be a handy utility. Paddy Mccartin also hinted at playing in defence for the Falcs this year.

In fairness to Durdin, he is very capable in the ruck and might just be able to make a bigger move up forward in the future. I'm not sold on him up front. Again, injury will badly effect his year.

It'll be interesting to see how the big guys are ranked come the end of the season. Often we see a number of tall's rated top 10 only to see them drift from ranking calculations towards the end of the season. I guess theres more risk selecting a tall with a high pick given they take a lot longer to develop.

That and people get swept up in all the kids getting 25 touches and a goal a game in the TAC Cup thinking they will be walk up stars at AFL level. These same people tend to forget that outside of 1 or 2 special occasions, nobody tags or plays serious two way defence in the U18's comp.

For those wanting to trade Stanley - Would you take Shaun McKernan in a straight swap?

Probably not, I'd much rather a draft pick.

That being said, I'm still hoping we get a Priority Pick this year! Just grab two of McCartin, Goddard, Durdin, Wright. Done deal, maybe pick up Lever with our 3rd pick.

Ah yes, that would be grand. The priority pick - and then we can take Riewoldt and Kositchke and we'll be sorted...

Just a shame it ain't the 00s any more. Absolutely no chance of a priority pick... we were in 2 GFs within the last five years for christ sake! The league are more likely to give Brisbane help than anyone else right now.

I think that priority pick is wishful thinking. It would also be end of rd 1 selection, but who knows who will be there at this stage. As to picking Kosi at pick 2 there wasn't much after didak at 3 and I think GT ruined him as mentioned in another thread.

Would be nice if Joey and Lenny could stay out for 1 extra round, lose the GWS game and we're well on our way. That being said, I really, really don't want to lose both of those matches.
That's pathetic and stupid. tbh

Fantastic idea, let's leave out our best available players and do a Melbourne so we can get a priority pick.

Realistically there is no way we are going to compete with GWS and Gold Coast without a LOT of high picks. That means either sustained, long-term poor play or a few years of seriously bad football.

Unless we have video of Vlad in a compromising position with a farm animal I really don't think there is any chance of us getting a priority pick this year.

I'm kinda surprised the AFL hasn't already decided to get rid of them.

This.
We would certainly have to get the spoon for more than one year to get one, at the AFL discretion. But then again there is a general consensus that StKilda are pathetic.

That's what people were saying about melbourne and Carlton 5 years ago...

"We can't win a flag from 2015 onwards because Melbourne and Carlton got all the top picks!"

Top picks don't mean shit. We, of all clubs, should know that your top 5 players aren't the difference on Grand Final Day. It's what you get out of your later picks and rookies (as well as free agents now) that can make a world of difference to a team.

If Port didn't get one a couple of years ago then I don't think it's possible to get one.

I know the club have said they plan on getting a few more top 20 picks but I'd prefer it didn't take things like not winning any games this year to get them. That has Melbourne written all over it.

Scrapping the COLA is a big step in the right direction but I'd like it to go even further and get rid of that little bit extra that teams in NSW and QLD get just because they're in those states, then we'd have a truly level playing field. Say what you want about Eddie but he's been massive in getting rid of it.

They're essentially gone. I think they've just left them in, totally up to the AFL as a kind of 'break in case of emergency' when a team goes winless through a season.

Just sad that we even joke about it, how quickly we got to this position once again just shows how badly our club has been managed
This. I'm still finding it hard to get my head around the idea that we might be at worst the worst team in the comp this year. That would just be just mind-boggling after 10 years of not having a single season where we didn't win more games than we lost and from making the prelim stage at least 5 times during that time. If we've fallen all the way to bottom that fast then it will reek of a whole load of incompetence in our football department over the past 5 or so years.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if we are a lot more competitive this year than so many expect us to be. I think there is life in the old dog yet and all the pressure and expectations of recent years is off, so they will be able to go out with a "nothing to lose" attitude and play with some real freedom of mind. Also, we are about a million times better when we play with manic defensive pressure, so if we bring that to the table on a regular basis this year and do in fact have a much greater level of fitness this year, we will win our share of games, provided of course our run with crucial injuries doesn't continue.
