This actually raises another interesting point that we're going to have to start thinking about, in a few years time.

Recruiting for the St Kilda VFL side.

Ooh, ooh... now I'm starting to think about all those potential NZ scholarship players... Get them playing for our VFL affiliate while they're still on scholarship, so it has no bearing on our salary cap - but they're still playing alongside our AFL players and learning our AFL game-plan. And when they perform well enough to come onto the AFL list, we draft them immediately, with absolutely no risk of another team snaffling them first.

If the Cats want to recruit a player from their VFL team, they have to chuck them into the draft or rookie draft, and hope that no other team takes them first. But that is not a problem with international scholarships.

Pelchen, that is flipping brilliant. :thumbsu:
He's a sneaky pr*ck, but he's our sneaky pr*ck. ;)

BREAKING NEWS

St. Kilda Sign former Wallabies and Waratahs Prop

Dunning in his prime for the Waratahs

In a move that shocked all codes in Australia today, the AFL club, St. Kilda, announced the signing of former Wallaby prop Matt Dunning. The 35 year old, Dunning, who made 45 Appearances at international level, and a further 110 for the Waratahs and the Western Force, was enthralled as he spoke to us today.

"It's gonna be a great experience for me, and my family. I felt I gave the game away too early, but I improved my fitness so much they kicked me out of the Front Rowers Union. It's not fair. Look at Max Lahiff at the Rebels, he's a ball of muscle instead of a fattie. But I digress. I've got the drive and the talent to make it."

The negotiations began when top recruiter, Tony "Trout" Elshaug was channel surfing one thursday night and saw Dunning's Segment, "Next Prop Model" on Fox Sport's "Rugby HQ".

Dunning Today with Reds prop Jono Owen

"We always knew Matt could kick goals, and be a really good player at AFL, like Plugger Lockett. We were just never sure of his fitness levels. But look at him now. I'm don't swing that way, but damn...."

The St. Kilda Fans we spoke to today were pleased with the 3-year deal, but worried for the welfare of well known arseh*le defenders, among them Nick Maxwell.

"Looks like a really good signing for us, holding down that Full forward spot. But I'm afraid that he's literally gonna kill some C*nt who ends up playing on him. I mean, I hate Maxwell's guts, but death is too far."

Dunning will join his new team-mates for preseason 2014, upon the conclusion of his Fox Sports contract.

That's what people were saying about melbourne and Carlton 5 years ago...

"We can't win a flag from 2015 onwards because Melbourne and Carlton got all the top picks!"

Top picks don't mean shit. We, of all clubs, should know that your top 5 players aren't the difference on Grand Final Day. It's what you get out of your later picks and rookies (as well as free agents now) that can make a world of difference to a team.
Melbourne were a basket case because they had little to no guidance, not an issue with Hayes, Riewoldt etc. Carlton killed their rebuild with a poor system and a lack of KPP talent, especially up forward. Judd trade worked wonders for them short term, but in the long term they sold themselves to a lot of average football. As for depth, GWS could have 15 first round picks + Shiel, Cameron and the like who were pre-selections. Gold Coast might not have as many guns, but have Jaeger and Jack Martin. Do I disagree with the theory on bottom 5? No. But if your top tier isn't up to it, you won't win the flag. In fact, the worst case scenario is Carlton, IMO. Hope every year, without any success. Years full of being middle of the table.

But Carlton did bottom out as you suggest we do and they have Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer and Judd to show for it.

They are stuck in teh middle of the pack because they haven't developed any kind of depth under their top end outside of Robinson, Henderson and McLean. Everyone else is either too old, too young or not good enough.

I would prefer we follow the lead of Hawthorn and Richmond.

Step 1 - Accept internally that we aren't good enough and that we need to rebuild. :thumbsu:

Step 2 - Identify the in house leaders required to steady the ship. :thumbsu:

Step 3 - Trade out excess senior players for youth/picks. :thumbsu:

Step 4 - Publically acknowledge the rebuild and let the fans become part of the journey. :thumbsu:

Step 5 - Back the senior coach in, regardless of on field results early. Wait and see.

Step 6 - Publically encourage improvement and set goals. :thumbsu:

Step 7 - Handle the ****ing media when shit doesn't go to plan. Wait and see.

Step 8 - Build the team from the midfield out. Wait and see.

Step 9 - Enjoy the ride :thumbsu:

Not quite, most definitely not yet. That being said, I didn't really rate Daniher as the KPF saviour like some Dons fans did. Boyd didn't stand out as the clear best-since-Riewoldt (to me) until his final year as well, so it is hard to judge these guys. Goddard has had his name up there for a while, since U16 really (like Jake Lever). His name remains up there, but in the second half of last season I felt his stock declined slightly. Wright is one who I think could break out this year, he's finally healthy and has some games under his belt from last season. Paddy is one to watch, after all he said he worked on his goal-kicking, so he could blossom nicely this season.

The casual observer seems to think that Hugh Goddard will be a star forward in the AFL but I can only see him as a CHB. Reminds me a lot of Michael Hurley, looks great forward but just doesn't do enough. We will have a pick in top 3 so we won't even consider Goddard that high. I'm really not his biggest fan at the minute but keep in mind all these kids still have a full year of school/TAC/Championships footy ahead of them so anything can happen between now and November.

Right now Goddard over Durdin, just forgot to mention Hugh in the group. Hugh's very talented (Paddy was very happy with his work as a team-mate) and Durdin has injury issues to start off the year. As for "nit picking", mate I'll always love to discuss the draft! Don't think you could lock down anything, but in that set up Goddard could be more handy. He'd be able to play both ends well (Hurley type, except he'd play well more than just once) and would be a handy utility. Paddy Mccartin also hinted at playing in defence for the Falcs this year.

In fairness to Durdin, he is very capable in the ruck and might just be able to make a bigger move up forward in the future. I'm not sold on him up front. Again, injury will badly effect his year.

Ah, I see you've compared Goddard to Hurley here too Rahul!

At no point over our 'rebuilding stage' should be trade away our first round draft pick!!!
I think it's wise to be open to all offers. Look at Melbourne last year effectively getting Dom Tyson and Salem for pick 2, after Tyson was himself taken at pick 3 just a couple of years ago. By the sounds of how well Tyson has gone so far I think Melbourne would be thrilled with that deal at this early stage.

But I guess you'll never know till years down the track, to see how they become.
They had there chance to get Kelly or even billings, and we shall see how they turn out!
But yes, open to 'offers'.

While Tyson seems to be going good so far in the pre-season, whether he was an early pick is irrelevant every day after draft day. Farren was an early pick, but that doesn't make him a better player.

I agree. To say priority picks guarantees a premiership would be wrong, but I don't think we can start to aim to climb the ladder this year or next.

To be honest players should have a say in where they are heading, why should they be going to a club where they don't want to be? not a fan of this idea. But i guess it would get the teams compensated better.

I'm a fan of the No Trade Clause, think that could be brought into footy. A team could pay more for a player to drop the clause, or less and he opts to keep it. Makes contract negotiations a whole lot more interesting. Not to mention, players will have more to think about. This is being considered for a good reason, the fact that players can demand trades after two years is ridiculous.

As for St Kilda, don't see us ever getting behind the idea due to Matt Finnis. It would throw everything into disarray almost immediately, but in the long term it could benefit the game. Consequence is that some young, dumb player won't have a clause and will be traded away from somewhere he has his life set up. Agree with ARR, something like this would take a LONG time to set up.

As long as we don't go the NRL path!

Don't mind the NRL but round 1 just started and already players are signing with other clubs for 2015 and beyond!!

The only way that works is if you get rid of the FA cap and let uncontracted players sign where they want, regardless of years in the league.

Or worse; Abolishment of the draft as a restriction of trade.

No way the AFLPA gives the clubs and the league that much power.

****ing stupid idea for our game.
