As long as we don't go the NRL path!

Don't mind the NRL but round 1 just started and already players are signing with other clubs for 2015 and beyond!!
Players signing with other teams for a future season during the current one annoys me more than anything. Lewandowski to Bayern Munich for example, don't know how his teammates feel now. Or Vidic to Inter Milan. Openly saying you will leave your club at the conclusion of the season would just be mentally draining, would suck a lot of future hope from a club.

I think that has a lot to do with the mentality as well. Doesn't that happen in the NRL?

I agree. To say priority picks guarantees a premiership would be wrong, but I don't think we can start to aim to climb the ladder this year or next.

I think any bounce back is mostly in response to two things; some good recruiting* and a realisation that some things were going badly and need tinkering or wholesale change.

On changes first; sometimes it's major like dumping the coach, other times it might just be a change in tactics a little, hiring new S&C coaches, or maybe you had a run of injuries so you start catering more to that (ideally without needles!).

Recruiting just means getting good players in. You still get good players lower down, occasionally you get a guy overlooked by everyone two or three times and they turn into a gun. But on the whole, higher the draft pick = more likelihood of sustained performance at AFL level. I don't think it needs to be pick 1 or 2. You would expect the player to have less weaknesses or be a more skillful, dynamic and/or well-rounded player if they were top-6. But you'll need a handful. Think of the 'wins' we had picking Lenny, Goddard, Dal, Roo and Kosi. We'll need similar decisions to find key players; I have faith that the staff are finding serviceable players with their later picks.

The casual observer seems to think that Hugh Goddard will be a star forward in the AFL but I can only see him as a CHB. Reminds me a lot of Michael Hurley, looks great forward but just doesn't do enough. We will have a pick in top 3 so we won't even consider Goddard that high. I'm really not his biggest fan at the minute but keep in mind all these kids still have a full year of school/TAC/Championships footy ahead of them so anything can happen between now and November.
Ah, I see you've compared Goddard to Hurley here too Rahul!
Very important point there. This year the top end seems quite even, I'm just waiting for someone to destroy the Champs or their state U18 comp. He could work up forward, he seems like the type that grabs opportunities by the throat up forward, but competes well down back. Paddy could be something is his goal kicking has actually improved.

They are leaving on a free transfer via the bosman ruling and that is different to what we have in the afl.

I'm not quoting any similarities, just saying that I dislike players announcing they will leave a team during a season of play.
dals a perfect example of this. he was appoached early in the year by north. because of the tribal nature of afl there was no way he could possibly announce that he was moving on or even entertaining the thought.

I would prefer we follow the lead of ... Richmond.

That's the first time in my football supporting life that I've heard that.

My initial reaction was the same! But then I considered, there must have been a serious change of thought at that club. They started loading on high-worth Mids in the draft, got a bit more professional throughout. I still think they're a bit soft so doubt they'll be in a GF soon, but they're much better strategically than they were.

Give me two picks inside the first round and I'd take one of Sam Durdin or Jesse Watchman (SA) or Hugh Goddard or Peter Wright (Vic) - McCartin if he grows two more inches - and Angus Brayshaw.

Boo. Yah.

Angus Brayshaw would be good slipping to our second pick. Fine young man. And can play.....

Can never have too many bull-at-a-gate mids IMO. Armo's a good solid soldier, but will never be an A-grader IMO; Ross needs a rocket and Dunstan is only 18!

Did you see he got over 20 tackles in a game last year, and did all the other stuff as well. Kicks, clearances, handballs, goals..usual stuff! Over 20 tackles is going some.

Jim Brayshaw got voted in for his 3rd and final 3 year term at North.

He won't be president when Angus comes out of his first contract so the pull won't really be there.

Has to be in the mix. He would fit Richos mantra perfectly. Imagine Hickey and Longer feeding Dunstan, Eli and Brayshaw?

Maybe even try to downgrade ala West Coast?? As long as we stay in front of North we could grab Gus and another top 20 pick...

I think we should really be looking to poach the GWS youngsters, especially if they do not improve much this year. A lot of talented players that aren't going to fit into their 22, I might go and make a wish list of GWS youngsters to poach :D

Cameron, Boyd, Patton... :p

Realistically though; Jaksch, Bugg, Frost, Kennedy, Townsend, Tomlinson and Whiley all have ability, Hoskin-Elliot doesn't seem to be getting a whole lot of games, and James Stewart may be a decent KPP depth figure if he could put some damn weight on!

Passes my threshold at 198cm, but 88kgs (and he doesn't look a whole lot bigger than that) is still very slight for a bloke who's been in the system 2 years.

Definitely want Adam Tomlinson. Good kid, had a chat with him at the Grand Final Week Events down at Fed Square. Seems to play his footy in a similar vein to Roo. He talked about Roo being a guy he emulates his game on. Probably won't get a continued run at GWS, given the depth of talls.

Definitely worth targeting. Will have 3 years of development in him as well!

Isn't that Stephan gihlam?
Tomlinson I thought, but in retrospect you might be right.

I'm crook and not wearing my glasses. STOP PICKING ON MEEEEE!
