14 and 15 for Armo and 22 is something I could see happening.

14 and 15 for Steven - no thanks.

I wouldn't do either. I would probably consider pick 11 straight. I would like to think 11 would reap a better option than two mid teens picks. Armo probably the more expendable as we have a lot of in and under mids coming through but not much run and speed. I think it's not a very smart move though my self.

Injuries permitting, Steven's best footy is ahead of him, would hate to trade him out now. Armo, not so bothered. Definitely prefer Armo to be traded of the two. Would feel really hollow if Jack got traded as I am not sure we would win in the long run.

I reckon Geelong might become interested in one of Steven or Armo with Varcoe and Christensen leaving… not sure if they'll have the currency though…

Would 14 get Armo done?

or 14 & 15 for Jack?

I'd take 14 for Armo.

Jack worth a top 2 pick, 14 and 15 won't get it done. He was an absolute gun mid next year, he's our best young player, is at the right age and already a BnF winner of our club, I'd take pick 2 from Melbourne, maybe pick 3 but personally I'd want to squeeze out 23 too... But I'd rather keep.[/QUOTE]

The only thing that worries me about Steven is if he decides to move on at the end of 2015, Stkilda might see that and choose to cash in now. I'm just speculating of course!
I hate this free agency shit and how it has changed the way we think.
You shouldnt be frightend of getting married cos your worried you might get divorced one day.

Bit late to the party but this is what I'm hoping for (captions provided).

For the life of me I dont see the slightest bit of sense in trading Jack Steven.
When fit he is our best mid by a country mile at the moment.
Get rid of a very good player to get a draft pick that should ( but maybe wont) develope into a very good player.
No thanks. I'll stick with Jack.

You answered your own question with the bolded part.

Yes, Steven may be our best player at the moment, but *at the moment*, the side is absolutely terrible. What we need, is a player that could be our best (or, at least very good) *later*, when we're challenging and will actually benefit from their talent.

In a previous post I outlined why I believe that Steven will not be as good when our side is at its peak (the nuts and bolts is that, given his lack of skills, he is largely a physical player, and such qualities drop off with age, which will be 28+ when we're in our window). Combine that with the fact that we'd get VERY good compensation for him (otherwise he wouldn't be traded, of course), and we currently have a very solid recruiting team, I'm of the belief that if we were to trade Steven, the player we end up drafting and developing will be more influential to our success than Steven when we're challenging.

I think that's why they like him more as a forward. IMO Richo wants defenders that can rebound as well and that's why most of the time we saw Delaney/Gwilt/Gilbert or Delaney/Gwilt/Fisher with Bruce playing either forward or VFL. I really like that plan.
I certainly hope to be proven wrong, if he makes it as a forward I would be as wrapped as anybody. I just feel we didn't give him much of a run at it this year, I felt he was reasonably impressive in the backline early then he was dropped. Given Fisher only has 1 more years, Dempster 2-3 and Gilbert's future uncertain I was really hoping Bruce could make the CHB role his own. We are still seriously lacking key position depth in the backline.

I'm sorry, I know this is a little crap to say but imho Farrey Ray and a Late pick is worth...... an even later pick

Be nice guys, Farren probably had his best season this year. His value to the team was very high despite the added attention on the senior players that were left. Melbourne were keen last year for a reason. He's a quiet reliable type who does his job in a professional manner and has enough skill to get by.

I'd be fine with Armitage leaving, but I feel it would be a dumb move to trade Steven, his value in the eyes of other clubs would be a lot lower after the injury ravaged season he just had.
Look at Jack in 2013, he was one of the best young midfielders in the competition, I'd be extremely disappointed to see him go.
Young and Jack don't go in the same sentence in terms of AFL careers. He is 25 in March and entering his 7th season. IMO he has a maximum of 80 games left considering his injury history. The same for Armo, turning 27 in June, has a limited playing time with us ahead of him.

lets just agree to totally disagree on that :-)

In this draft it looks like the mid teens might have some real value for mids since the top end is so tall. In my completely uneducated opinion I'd take 14 and 15 over 12 and 22.

E: But we are much more likely to get 12 from the Tigers than the picks from the Cats.

Can't see us parting ways with Steven, but if we did, picks 4 and 6 from the dogs would be a good deal for us. Melbourne might want to give up pick 2, could you imagine going into the draft with picks one and two again? That would solve any headaches about who to take at 1.

I'd trade Armitage for pick 12 but I can't see the Tigers giving that up.

If we did trade Steven, I'm just glad we have plenty of more Jacks in the team meaning my name on here would still make sense!

With all of our inside mids, and the chance we might turn Membrey into an inside beast - then Armo might be the one. Maybe he was the 'other' deal that Richo let out of the bag. I personally think Dave was our best mid this year when fit, so I wouldn't be all that keen to trade him out, perhaps for a top 7 pick but who would honestly do that? Dees? Pies? Dogs?

Perhaps someone could help me with this one but it's considered that Armo is a pretty slow mid these days, but isn't he in the top ten over 20m in the combine records? What happened to the pace? Did he bulk up too much or is it injuries taking their toll?

I love the grunt armo brings, but I reckon he's pretty much hit his ceiling performance wise. We have to decide if that is what we want / need for our future. I don't think he has another level in him. Jack, on the other hand, has HUGE upside. If (and only if) we have to trade one, it's a no brainer for me.

I'd trade Armitage for pick 12 but I can't see the Tigers giving that up.

Why not? A kid wont help them win a flag any time soon and if they think they need more inside grunt to help free up Cotchin etc along with more leadership then 12 should be on the table.

I wouldn't trade Steven unless it was for a top 5 pick and even then I think it would be a pr disaster. Roo and Steven are the only genuinely good players that we have to watch. I think people saying Stevens disposal is poor are fairly shortsighted, he can miss a few because he goes for very damaging kicks a la Stevie j. Give me that over rockliffs nothing kicks any day.

We don't really have a genuine swingman that can play back so I don't mind the idea of developing Bruce into a bit of a wild card we can move around. I'm getting the feeling his number 27 will suit him well.

Why are both been mooted?

Why trade players who are not requesting trades and have plenty to offer.
An unnecessary risk IMO

Jack is no star (just not a good kick)

Armo either... Just doesn't win enough footy

But both have had 3 very good seasons

Happy to trade Armo this year, Jack next year. Neither are stars and neither are taking this current team to the holy land.
Armo has maximum value given this season so out he goes first.
