Are key forwards what they used to be in the modern congested game?

Would you rather Ablett or Hawkins?

Fyfe or Tippett?

Dangerfield or Roughhead?

You can win flags without monster forwards dominating, but you can't without an epic deep midfield.

I could be way off but I can't see Boyd & Patton dominating like Dunstall & Plugger did. Gun key forwards are obviously still going to help win games, but I just wonder whether I'd rather spend the big picks on gun mids. I'd rather 10 dangerous avenues to goals like port than a champion forward that gets swamped on every entry.
They obviously help but an elite midfield is far more important. Nathan Ablett and Quinten Lynch being premiership players proves that more than anything.

Good comment.

To be honest, I think Melbourne's problem lies more in their player development rather than their recruiting. No doubt their recruiting has been substandard, but I think their player development has been pretty terrible.

Spot on, my thoughts exactly. Watts, Scully, Trengove, Toumpas (2nd year player - give some time). They were rated by most teams/experts as top of theire respective classes. How did they all underachieve?

With the Age reporting that the Dogs offered Boyd more than $1m/pa on at least 6 years I think I'd be happy if we pass on that. That is more money than I'd be comfortable with and I don't see how it couldn't hurt our FA ambitions in 2016. I'd prefer to take the chance with McKenzie or just back our development of Lee, White and Stanley than put that much money plus whatever picks and players it would take to get the deal done.

I'm kinda hoping that our interest is just a ploy to weaken two teams we will be competing with in a few years. If the Dogs pay too much for Boyd it can put serious pressure on their list later on and GWS will be significantly weakened by losing Boyd. In the meantime we can just keep making deals on our terms for the right price and not do anything that could seriously risk derailing the whole rebuild.

Yep, 100% agree. I don't mind us knocking on the door, to keep pushing that wage up and up and up. Then we get to shake one of their young guns loose in a few years, gimme Stringer/Bontempelli in a couple years.

It's a question worth asking. You wonder how a player such as Ollie Wines, or Luke Dunstan would have tracked at Melbourne.

I think the Hunt rumour might have some substance... We have to fill our rookie list somehow.

Sidenote: How about we let the Dogs run themselves into the ground by throwing a multi-million dollar contract at a 19 y.o, then in a few years time, when their salary cap is tight, we grab a Macrae or a Bontempelli and run off like bandits ;)

Crap thing about st.bedes is they never claimed him as a beda boy, I was at st.bedes when he moved across and was on the saints list in his year 12 year and they never made a big deal out of it.

Went to their Open Day last month for my boy's enrollment and his pic is up in their sports hall of fame. Surprisingly, Joe Blake isn't.

Then we would be stuck paying bonts or macrae 1mill a year.

Would rather just pay Boyd tbh

Thankgod they got their s/// together.

So, it seems like all the dominoes will fall into place once someone blinks. So my question is- who should I be blaming for all this time wasting?
Collingwood for being pig headed and wanting too much?
Brisbane for not offering enough?
Bulldogs for thinking Griffen = Boyd?
Gws for not realising griffen=Boyd?
Or Essendon for, well, just because!

Thats crazy money. Better offf waiting 6 years then offering more.

I'd rather build our own gun. I don't want boyd now. 1 million and pick 1 + steak knives is to much. Stick to the plan that was just in the paper today. Work on keeping players at the club as this is going to be the biggest challenge for every club in the near future as this trend sorts itself out.
