It's been a long, long, long thread, and it appears Joffaboy is the first to crack after pages and pages of posting. Just a question, Joffaboy, how many times have you seen these guys play? How many times have you interviewed them, or visited their families? How many times have you viewed their medical reports or spoken to their coaches, teachers, doctors, talent managers etc? No, I'm not saying you don't have a right to an opinion, that would be silly and unfair, but would you not accept that the opinion of the team of full-time, professional, well-paid recruiters would be more informed than your own? Also, I'd much, much rather we lose a few hundred members than make a decision that we don't believe in. The recruiters have earned the right the back themselves in.

On the Petracca vs McCartin argument, I have nothing more to say than everything that has been said in this thread, IMO if we are confident Petracca's hips are fine he is the best player in the draft, if not, it's a line-ball call. McCartin has played some exceptional football and is far and away the best pure forward in this draft at this point in time. He has shown real ability in his bottom-age year but his body didn't let him string it all together this year.

The real comment I want to make, is on McLure's point, that we were disappointed in Petracca's testing. Personally, yes, I was slightly disappointed, but CP was dealing with a hip injury and performed admirably considering the circumstances. The argument in itself is flawed, we could ask Nat Fyfe to take a clean hands test right now, of course he would perform poorly, he can barely move his shoulder! His testing in the AIS was very, very good, not Angus Brayshaw level but impressive nonetheless. How could you possibly judge a player on his injury-hit testing numbers?

OK, so in your opinion, nobody can comment on anything until they have seen everything the recruiters have seen?

Answer me this then Rahaul, considering you must think you are some type of guru

Why did we trade out a forward we had invested five years in?

Why did we sign Lee for another two years?

Why do we need a KP when we just signed Riewoldt for two years?

It is generally known that a midfield will win you first games and then flags.

We have lost bj, dal, and Lenny from the midfield. How will our mids even get it to McCartin next year?

To me it is incomprehensible with all of the above moves.

But hey according to some, I should just **** off and support another club because I think it is a terrible move.

The only thing that would change my view is if Petracca has a permanetly crook hip, but then again McCaaaaartin has an incurable condition and is also injury prone.

So i will just fall into line and just from now on wax lyrical about the wonderful choices the recruiters have made and are going to make.

One reason I can see for them doing this is the potential for gun mids at low picks next year and the chance as well that we might lose Jack or Armo to FA giving us 2 picks under 4 most likely and building a midfield from there if McCartin comes good.

On pure football ability, I'd take him over Petracca, but he doesn't have the same athleticism. Darcy Tucker will be better than Darcy Parish IMHO, he's just waiting to explode, terrific athlete and footballer.

If picking the best forward in the draft is enough to have you questioning your status as a member beyond 2015 then I dont think your 50 years of support are worth all that much.

We may still go with Petracca and we should all be fine with that.

Those who think McCartin would be a terrible pick should do this: Come up with a forward 6 for 2020 that you think can win a flag.

2 rules though - You cant use players from other clubs and you can't assume we get Reece McKenzie at 21.

Just our current list with Petracca.

Sure you can point to the midfield as being weaker but here is where drafting McCartin has a benefit - We still get 2 very good mids at 21 and 22.

You cant use McKenzie in scenario A because he is the only other KPF being talked about. We have to assume he wont make it to our pick.

We can use all sorts of mids though. Any 2 of Garlett, Lamb, Ahern, Weller, Cockatoo, Duggan, ANB, Blakley...

While not as good as Petracca outright, they can provide enough to get the ball going into our forward line where McCartin waits.

So try it. Build a forward line and midfield around Petracca plus 2 mids vs McCartin plus 2 mids.

Unless we can get say with 100% certainty that we will get one of McKenzie or Cameron then there is a logical reason to lean towards McCartin in what most people seem to think is a 50/50 choice.

Billings rotating through the midfield with Petracca and others. Still not shabby, I think we need to realise KPFs are not always the be all end all, Geelong won the '07 grand final with Mooney and N.Ablett as KPFs, far from star forwards, but with midsizers such as Stevie J and Paul Chapman who were absolutely crucial, if we can try to replicate the impact of those guys with Petracca and Billings rotating on a half forward line and through the talented midfield we look to be building (Dunstan, Acres, Billings, Petracca (?), Steven, Newnes, pick 21 or 22, Parish/Tucker/Mathieson (?) and even Armo if he's around). I don't think we NEED a star forward, but I think we truly need (at least more so) a matchwinner who you can build your midfield around like Petracca. I think we lacked a watchwinner of Petracca's calibre in '09 and '10 with our midfield of Hayes, Ball, Dal Santo, Montagna, Ray etc.

But of course, best case scenario for me, I can't help myself but fantasise about something that most likely will not happen haha.

Hypothetically if we do favour Petracca then that's against the grain, and that's my concern. I'm YET to read or hear a club or media person say McCartin is the best kid in the draft. That honour has consistently gone to CP.

I don't think I'm some sort of guru at all, the clubs would have watched these boys since U12 rep footy, which is why they make the big decisions.

Do you know that CP's hip is completely fine? It's been noted that his issues have been there for some time, unlike McCartin's niggles, CP has had consistent issues in one area of his body.

Again, I never said you couldn't question their choices. I've certainly wondered why Pelchen 'resigned' for a while, and why so many applaud Bains' handling of the contracts, Richo's coaching and Finnis in general, that doesn't mean I slam the club. It's one thing to ask a question, quite another to suggest that the recruiters would be making a huge mistake because you think so personally, off limited, bias samples.

I tried to stay on the bandwagon but Petracca just kept dominating and made it impossible not to want him. Paddy still the next guy I would take but after CP.

Good points and all can be used to better effect for midfielders.

There is only one Jeremy Cameron so getting him may prove impossible. But one of Sheil, Treloar, WHE could be shaken from the tree alot easier.

Ill say it again - I would pick Petracca. I think he is the best player in the draft.

Think like a recruiter though. We cant bank on getting an elite KPF through trading or FA. On the other hand mids are more common and would come cheaper.

We expect to finish low again next year in a draft with elite midfield talent at the top end. We can get our 'Petracca' next year.

We have holes all through our list and this is may well be a 50/50 choice. Given the abilty to get mids is significantly easier (through drafting, yrades and FA) it makes logical sense to pick McCartin and stock up on mids as we go.

So I ask again - Given we cant rely on hypothetical trades or FA signings, what do you think our forward setup looks like come 2020 if we take Petracca?
