It's not whose the best player now, it's about in 5 years. I'm in the McCartin camp purely based in the fact that we need the next Reiwoldt, but will he just as happy if we pick CP.
Our list rebuild will take another 3-4 years, there are no decent KPP next year and a plethora of elite on ballers who I'd take as 17 year olds over CP even today.
You all need to chill, our recruiters have been watching these kids since they were 12 years old, Paddy is a beast as is CP, just a pity we can't have both.

Hasn't the club been telling its SUPPORTERS that they will pick the best player available, now there not doing that FFS

FWIW I am firmly in petracca's camp. I reckon if we pass on him Melbourne would be doing cartwheels.
However- I cant help but to wonder if it would be more responsible to grab PM. As things stand we have Roo for 2 more years, and in that time we have to HOPE that at least one of white, lee etc come on AND we can lure a KPF via DFA. Grabbing PM guarantees one of those spots is filled
I rate petracca higher, and like I say I'm in his camp, but just wonder......

I posted this earlier, before the poo hit the fan. I wonder if I may have inadvertently hit on something here. Maybe trout thinks the same way?
Either way, I still want CP. But I'm not gonna hate on PM either as I can see merit in grabbing him.

We may still go with Petracca and we should all be fine with that.

Those who think McCartin would be a terrible pick should do this: Come up with a forward 6 for 2020 that you think can win a flag.

2 rules though - You cant use players from other clubs and you can't assume we get Reece McKenzie at 21.

Just our current list with Petracca.

Sure you can point to the midfield as being weaker but here is where drafting McCartin has a benefit - We still get 2 very good mids at 21 and 22.

You cant use McKenzie in scenario A because he is the only other KPF being talked about. We have to assume he wont make it to our pick.

We can use all sorts of mids though. Any 2 of Garlett, Lamb, Ahern, Weller, Cockatoo, Duggan, ANB, Blakley...

While not as good as Petracca outright, they can provide enough to get the ball going into our forward line where McCartin waits.

So try it. Build a forward line and midfield around Petracca plus 2 mids vs McCartin plus 2 mids.

Unless we can get say with 100% certainty that we will get one of McKenzie or Cameron then there is a logical reason to lean towards McCartin in what most people seem to think is a 50/50 choice.

That's a blatantly ridiculous scenario though; you can't use McKenzie, but you can include two theoretical midfield selections?

I will be supporting McCartin if we are dumb enough to select him over Petracca and I hope he proves me completely wrong.

I really love it when a Saints player whom I dont think isn't going to make it does (not saying that McCartin wont make it).

I just feel we will regret not taking Petracca for the next ten years. Shaping up as a huge disappointment to allow Melbourne pick up both Brayshaw and Petracca.

Melbourne supporters will be delirious, Saints supporters totally split.

i think this is the draft where everyone would have changed seats probably a dozen times. i know i went from:
wright -> mccartin -> wright -> pickett -> durdin -> petracca and thats where i am now. only to be questioning it now

PM with two mids who are potentially equal top 10 picks because of the depth of the draft makes sense to me, but that just my opinion.

Sure McCartin plus 2 mids makes sense, but so does Petracca, a mid and a KPF... And (sorry D) what if we picked McDonald?!!

We do still need another KPD... I just think it's unfair to say McCartin and two mids makes more sense than Petracca and two mids when you won't allow for Petracca and something other than two mids...

Yeah thats right because mids @21 and 22 are rated the same as mids @ 2 or 3.

Makes total sense. Just grab any two mids that have been overlooked by every club and well be right hey?

Might even make the finals in five or so years

Paige uploaded a new podcast - Basic spiel for us.

- Great year to have multiple picks where we have them

- Pick number one some people think Petracca, Petracca, Petracca. Discusses Sam McLure this afternoon regarding Paddy McCartin. She said that we can't complain with taking either and we will get a quality player with either. Paige said she would take McCartin due to the face that their is no key position talent in the next few years equal to McCartin. Said she is not Elshaug or Bains and it wouldn't be an easy decision. It gives the Saints a gun 10-15 year forward meaning we can load up on midfielders with picks 21 & 22. McCartin has had a really bad run of luck more than anything else with getting his foot stepped on etc. If McCartin had a full bill of health the entire year he could have produced a lot. Ridculous ability to take big contested grabs and its something that the Saints could build a team around, someone you want to add to that is a McCartin type. This would be looking at the bigger picture. Says the more she thinks about it the more she likes it with Paddy going to the Saints.

- Discusses Nick Riewoldt and if McCartin lands at St Kilda he will be able to learn off the best key forward of the modern era. Someone like McCartin would be able to develop under Nick Riewoldt closely.

- Pick 21/22 is good picks to have, Corey Ellis could be one that slides through. Ability around the stoppages first class, good contested ball and tackling, nothing flashy about him and doesn't have much X-Factor, just gives complete service.

- Another one is Tom Lamb, talk he will go to Essendon at pick 17, has a lot of upside. Bottom age year sensational, was a little bit overwhelmed with the pressure that has come over him this year and as a result he has struggled this year. Similar to Pat Vezpremi in 2007 draft with the reading in his body language etc. Lots of internal pressure with Tom Lamb on himself. Woeful field kicking. She would back the Saints and their development to get him right and he would fight into the forward line/midfield well. Blue print of the modern midfielder.

- Other options, Dan McKenzie, has a knack for finding another gear in big games. Doesn't get much possession but dominated qualifying final. Great athleticism. Physically and mentally put his opponents to the sword. The Saints would be good to mould him.

- Alex Neal Bullen been around this range for most of the year. Played a lot at Glenelg, similar to Dane Swan type. Deceptively quick and slots in nicely amongst bigger bodies. Takes hits and dishes them out. One of the best inside midfielders available at this years draft and is good at using the ball on the outside. Neal Bullen is a poor mans Petracca as they share similar attributes. Able to hit the score board as well. They might think if they get McCartin at one he would play well next to Dunstan. Massive beep test and sub 10 3k time trial. Really rare for a player to go to another level to go to another level after National Championships, ANB stats tell the story, averaging 15 disposals pre Championships, up to 24-25 post championships.

- Pick 41 will be a really interesting option. Trying to find gems in the 40s and there on. Good opportunity to find someone late who could come good. Would the Saints look at Ahmed Saad. Paige suggests Jack Lonie, she likes him cos she is taller than him. He would also be able to bring excitement to the Saints and can create opportunities to. Good avenue to goal and masters the ability to play front and centre. It would be good to have McCartin playing forward and Lonie crumbing at his feet, they had great chemistry in the championships.

- Jayden McGrath, injury concerns this year.

- Lots of talk on the Petracca/McCartin issue. Could be a massive beat up and that the Saints have got the journos to take the heat off Petracca over the next couple of days. AFL have requested the Saints to keep it a secret and she feels the Saints would have done this so doesn't understand the leak. Either way this is going to memorable draft.

If you had paid attention to the draft you'd know that most 'experts' rate the mids/flankers as pretty well even from picks 10-20.

Given the likes of Marchbank, McKenzie, Lamb, McDonald etc who could all go higher, there is a significant chance of getting 2 quality midfielders this year.

Opposite to that - Therd arent any elite KPF options outside of McCartin, Wright or McKenzie.

Most people see Wright playing in the ruck given his athletic ability and size. Some people dont rate McKenzie in the first 2 rounds.

The only constant is that McCartin is the best KPF available.

So I ask - IF we dont draft McCartin, who is playing FF come 2018-2020 when we are planning on pushing into the top 4?

Roo wont be there and you've lambasted the club for resigning Tommy Lee. So who?

Putting alot of faith in Spencer White and Josh Bruce as KPF prospects. Or will you back our recruiters (who you have also had a go at in this thread) to draft one later?

Maybe we can cross our fingers that Cameron picks us?
