Given Bock was in the media for all the wrong reasons im not surprised he left.

Davis, well money talks.

The problem are people are taking the easy option and simplifying 3 distinct and seperate events into 1 overarching conclusion.

How many players resigned during that period? A shitload.

Sure other clubs didn't lose 2 players to the expansion teams but they did lose them to other teams.

Perhaps we should be taking solace that it took extraordinary offering to move Davis and Bock?

And well Gunston, he is the same as blokes like Ebert. Mentally soft.

It might be a coincidence that we have lost three young 10 year key position players while other clubs haven't.

Tippett I can stomach losing. I don't mean the fall out but obviously we did all we could there to keep him, and then some...

With Davis and Gunston though, I think at key times when these players should have been falling in love with the club, becoming part of the furniture and deciding that they wanted to be Adelaide footballers for life they were instead yoyo-ing in and out of a losing team

The downside of having a pitiful year is, clearly, the pitiful year. The upside is that you get to invest games in the future more heavily. Because obviously the present doesn't matter. Instead we worried ONLY about the present. Obsessed by it. Fixated only on the next weekend. Davis dropped after a rising star nomination so that Scott Stevens could play in a season where we were out of the top eight... If you deliberately tried to come up with the stupidest, most club destroying, backwards, blatant sabotage of a club you'd be hard pressed to come up with something better than that.

The list of names we had playing ahead of Davis and Gunston in 2010/2011 makes for some embarrassing reading. I know Davis ended up getting injured but that only highlights the missed opportunity. Oh... and you were just about to become a regular player too. Just typical Adelaide speak - when we don't have to back it up with actions we're fine. Next season they'll get plenty of games. All he knew was that when he was available he didn't play.
But otger clubs have lost players, you are trying fit you argument by highlighting the set players we have lost (have we "lost" any important mids?)

I can actually handle the losses, I think to a degree it has taught the club that in doubt trade, which I think other clubs do.

The funny thing, Gunston wouldnt have won us more games and wouldn't solve any of our problems anyway so I'm not sure why people keep banging on about it.

Every time I watch Gunston play I vomit a little bit. Why this kid spent so long in the SANFL I will never know.

Sick of hearing this myth trotted out all the time. Barring Sam Reid I don't think there was a single other tall forward from his draft who played more games than Gunston had by the end of 2011. He was given games very early and wasn't mistreated in the slightest.

Even though I disagree with it, I can see the argument for Davis having been "mistreated". Gunston? Not even slightly.

Watching tonight makes me realise how far away we are from a flag. Really like both teams but Geelong more so. Still think they will be around the mark for a few more years

God I hate Geelong now, they are not the team they once were ... full of acting for frees and complaining about the decisions and sniping. Can't stand them - was great to see a side brimming with skilled footballers hand them a finals spanking.

Sydney were playing finals football, we were not. Should have given us ample opportunities.

I just don't understand the apples/oranges stuff. We'd found ourselves an absolute gem with a 2nd round pick (thanks Rendell, your reward is you're fired) with 10x the ability of the draftees taken around him.

We were deplorable with a forward line that had lost/was losing Hentschel, Burton, Porplyzia for various reasons.

Playing him was an absolute no brainer. Unfortunately we have no brain.

No good clubs lose important players. Well, not before they've received multiple premierships anyway.

We lost those players because we were and are a bad club. Not because we unluckily had drafted flight risk certainties.

Brisbane have also lost key young players, because they are a bad club.

What?!

Fwiw my opinion is that with Bock, Davis, Tippett and Gunston you lot would have been a totally different team and one capable of competing at the highest level.

A Tippett, Gunston, Tex and Betts forward line would be very scary, as would having Talia, Bock and Davis as KPDs with a couple of more than capable small defenders.

Bock was the only "important" player. The others were unproven rookies.

If you really think keeping Gunston would equalled anything more than the same results we have, well you are more deluded than I thought.

Probably one of the most bizarre comments I have read on this board.

Tex to Port will be good for the Crows as it will free up the salary cap or whatever other excuse one could come up with would be worse. Yet to hear it but it would be worse. :D

Spot on PAF. I would thrown in John Griffin as well. He would have been a handy backup ruckman. I remember back in 2009, before the mass exodus, more than one commentator said that Adelaide had one of the best young lists in the comp. Fast forward 5 years later and thanks to a deplorable administration and shitty culture, most of that young talent has walked out the door.

Sad but true. Was this a Neil Craig thing, and hopefully in our past, or an AFC thing and the status quo?

Right after hearing that Gunston wouldn't have made a difference, you managed to top it by making the even more bizarre statement that Griffin would have? This thread has gone off the rails.

BS I didn't say Griffin would have mad a difference I said he would have been handy backup ruckman NOW. Much better option than anything we have now.

I agree with MS.
You had your talls sorted out and all of high quality plus there is a difference between back up and main ruckman.
Not to mention that Tippett was a more than handy part time ruckman whilst still having 2 quality talls in Tex and Gunston up front whenever he would spend a few minutes in the ruck.

Anyway it's all mustaches aunts and uncles stuff now but still true.

We lost Davis because of the money and the position offered to him. Irrefutable. Same with Bock except for the position thing.

The money was available to all the young key position players in the AFL. Irrefutable.

Heritier Lumumba shouldn't be called weak or soft headed for not wanting homophobic stuff to be part of his club's culture.

I would love him to join the Crows, great line breaker that can tackle and gives 100% - and he would be a great person for young guys to be around ... more of a leader than many are insinuating. Would welcome him, his ability to stand up for what he believes in, and his strong mindedness into the organisation.

Oh, and finally - the name change - was more of a change back to his real name wasn't it? I thought he shortened his first name to Harry and took on his step-father's surname of O'Brien.

"Going to the Mardi Gras, boys?" graffitied on a poster of a couple of their players. Tacky and unprofessional? Absolutely. Homophobic? Not even close.

The issue is that he kicked up a fuss about something very small. At most, someone in the club should have identified the culprit and told them to pull their heads in. The Messiah Heritier decided it was a heinous crime and demanded punishment. He walks the hallways of the club with a god complex and I think he'd be way too much of a handful. No matter how he plays on the field.

"Homophobic" is a bit of an over-used term, but it was clearly a remark with is implicitly derogatory towards homosexuals. As far as I'm aware, Heretier didn't "demand punishment", he asked the club to do something about it. That "something" could take many forms - most usefully would be some kind of education to help his teammates understand how harmful this kind of casually derogatory attitude towards homosexuality can be to homosexuals.

I can't really speak about whether Heretier thinks his shit stinks or not (and neither can anyone else on here), but in this case he was well within his rights to act as he has and I think it's disgraceful how the footy community at large has reacted to it.
