He drank an over the counter energy drink on match day. On a Wednesday, all OK. On a Saturday, 18 month ban. And ASADA thought it too soft!!!

2 years?? I can only hope, but this will never happen. I guarantee it will be a watered down off-season-only ban and AFC will have to pay a fine for being in the same city as Ryder and Wantfrees.

ASADA successfully appealed a 9 month ban for a VFL player and got it increased to 2 years. The AFL are not going to get away with a slap on the wrist now.

I can honeatly see Ryder being banned 2 of his 3 contracted years the way it is going.

I don't really get why the Essendon players are being held accountable. Weren't they acting from the advice of the club?. Hird and Essendon should be held accountable but unless there's proof that the players knew they were taking banned subdtances, aren't they innocent of any wrong doing.

Of course not. Plenty of Olympians and pro-cyclists out there competing on advice from the coach/team doctors taking 'supplements'.

Yes as per the training they get from the draft combine on. A 17yo draftee knows the rules as well as a 30yo veteran.

So many Power supporters are all of a sudden keen on the Essendon debacle being finished quickly and not being too unfair on the players as it is obvious that the club not the players were the problem - understandable I guess

I know that Port would have factored in the chance of this going bad, but gee it's a massive risk to take on.

No, not at all - in fact if you check - I've said all along that all of the players should get a full whack, and so should the Essendon coaches / admin.

Not how it works Mike ... athletes are responsible. That is how is has to be otherwise you'd have a line up of "support" people taking the penalties.

This idea that professional footballers (yes even 17 year old ones) don't understand this principle is laughable.

When you're a professional athlete, yes, you should. Ignorance is not a defence.

Either that, or they get definitive proof that what they're being given is well within the rules, which should include thorough product information, dose and records, as well as how it fits within the rules.

Players are responsible for their own career, they're not children.

Players/athletes are held accountable because, if they are not, every drug cheat on the planets has an easy excuse: oh, it wasn't me, it was my coach/fitness adviser/doctor/manager/mum etc.

Players know this. They are advised of their responsibilities from day one. You can't plead ignorance. If you've been deceived into thinking something is benign, then I'd guess you'd have a case to sue the person who did the deceiving.

There's a famous story about Melinda Gainsford who once opted to have her wisdom tooth extracted without painkillers because she was in competition at the time and didn't want to risk a positive test.

Yeah, legally the players are to be held accountable for what goes into their body, and that's probably fair enough.

However, the players should then be able to seek legal recourse against the club that gave them such terrible advice - and I hope they all take Essendon to the cleaners.

The scenario I keep coming back to is the players being told to take the supplements. They're concerned because it's their body, etc, so they ask, what are we taking? They're told it's for recovery and yes, it's all above board, we checked it by the WADA code, etc.

Legally they're still responsible, but surely the club then has to be held liable for any punishment they receive?

There should be a lot of cases coming up where the phrases "emotional distress" and "loss of potential income" will be used.

No, I've always thought all 34 players should get a 2 year ban and Hird and Dank should receive life-time AFL bans. I don't care what team they play for. Tex could test positive tomorrow and I would be saying the same thing.

All with a SCN have had a chance to step up and possibly take a lower punishment, although not guaranteed, and none of them, even those no longer at Essendon (who should have no loyalty) have not done so. So they should all get 2 years.

What's astonishing about this mess is how the hell did we get harsher draft penalties than Essendon. Has anyone, other than Caro, ever asked this question.
