I went to the Nepean football league gf on Saturday. There would have been 2k there. They allowed the crowd out onto the ground at qtr time 3/4 time and for the presentation for all 3 grades. Aflq are towing some line

But I think it would have to come back to when craig obrien a dad went and abused the umpires at qtr of the 2011 pic gf
But there's no consistency, some GFs you could go out onto the ground (eg QFA GF) but some you were't (eg QAFL) so what's going on there? Is it a ground thing? ie Yeronga not wanting people on the ground but Coorparoo not minding? I would bet every GF down south has an open ground policy, it's what makes the day.

What's that got to do with afl in qld. They've always had strong crowds at sanfl gfs

It has to do with them focusing on developing a sport that is in its infancy still compared to other states, and stop coming up with stupid rules and bogus ideas about what our sport needs !!

Agree with all points above. AFLQ embarrassed themselves. $10 entry fee but the outer wing opposite coaches area, plus back oval was not fenced off. Park up the road and enter for free.
To not let anyone on the field. Please. Look at NEAFL GF and see Aspleys players be swamped with supporters, family, volunteers etc is the way it should be.

QFA nth conf GF also had supporters on the turf at caboolture Bunyip - it just adds to the day. People will pay $7 or more to come thru the gates for the total experience, the footy is just a part of this, not the whole thing.

Smy and all above recent posters. All your points are correct in all subject matter raised..... if it wasn't so serious it would be funny!!! What a disgrace !!

There has been noise on the Gold Coast for a while about going back to the Gold Coast Football League, I have previously dismissed this as fanciful but over recent days I am beginning to rethink the whole concept.Firstly the AFL across Australia with seemingly good intentions has taken over leagues for what they thought was the betterment of the game unfortunately they have taken a democratic system and replaced it with a communist one.In the process taking away the rights of the grass roots stakeholders to have a say in their game. They are not only administering the game they are putting their own strategies in place to drive change.

This has seen people being appointed to positions without the skill sets to perform them to a reasonable standard and enable them to control their own agendas without any seeming accountability.I hoped that when Conlan took over we were to see a big broom put through Yeronga and some talent put into the place but all we have seen is changes in the competitions structures, womens footy forced down everybodies throats and more of the boys club decision making.

I saw a post earlier which spoke about the QAFL fees being $35000 per club well 10 clubs equals $350000, actually sell some SEO and click throughs on your website and there is another few thousand depending on traffic. I reckon you could run a league with $370,000 and the league board could have some say in the direction of the game.

AFLQ handed Southport the keys to Gold Coast footy but they just drove in to the surf and left it there to rust, a whole thread could be dedicated to the Sharks and heading south, eighth with a bullet but that will be for another time.

The Suns also are not allocating money for NEAFL full time players so they have yet to get it as well, in the end the game is poorer for a lack of empathy for the grass roots passion.Change is needed somewhere.

LAB,

Spot on here above, AFL Footy and it's governance is very well protected by the boys club - All decisions are made from In House and who do the decision makers answer too ???? Know one.

Without the Grass Root support there is no game - Again some from within think without the cooperates support there is no game, but if kids don't play the game then there is no future for the game.

The current Governance has a "now" mentality rather than a "future" mentality - The people who make the now decisions are only caretakers of our game - If we don't look after the now, we may not have much to look forward to in the future.

Aspley winning the NEAFL Comp this year gives me a little bit of hope for Qld Footy in general - But what did this win cost us at a state level???
A split in the AFLQ footy ranks as we knew it - where by most posts = A them and us attitude. A footy side (Morningside) as a fall out of the re-vamped NEAFL Competition which is light years ahead of the game at this state's level and a lot of people shaking their heads saying how do we compete against this??????

Level playing fields (pardon the pun) are the only way to increase support of any game, but in this case especially our game - The numbers attending at the games here in Qld are telling the AFL that they have got it wrong, this is from the Lions and Suns to the minor competitions. Changes are needed and Conlan is the man to achieve this, but time is running out - I agree a new broom is required for Qld AFL Footy, but the changes need to come from the top down not the bottom up, these changes need to be accountable to us the supporters, not to the whims of the current ruling body, as currently this governance has no one to answer too except themselves!!!!!!!

Reckon it has something to do with games post these ones. No games post the QFA GF's although saying this you were allowed out for the 2's matches as well. It does seem really strange.

And I think I read somewhere SMY that you could go onto the ground in the NEAFL final, someone feel free to correct me there if I'm wrong, so if that is the case then that's not quite right either. All up though agree it's very strange

There was no problem to go on to the ground at the NEAFL grand final. Plenty of guys and girls out there having a kick during the breaks, and the huddle around the teams at 3 quarter time was massive !!

LAB has many salient points.

The real problem is that EVERY major competition under AFL is compromised...and its a fact that doesn't seem to be hidden.

Box Hill lost a VFL Grand Final on the weekend when Hawthorn called enough time on Cyril Rioli and made him sit out the last quarter, even though Box Hill were decimated due to injury. Went into 3/4 time up and got rolled, with injured players forced to go on to the ground. How would you feel if you were a Box Hill volunteer, sponsor or non AFL contracted player...gutted. But who cares, its all about nurturing AFL players...isn't it?

NEAFL get it as well. GWS, because of the imbalance of the competition, easily make finals, push a club out, and then show contempt for the competition by going out in straight sets, just after mad monday....you reckon they wanted to be there? Suns have treated the competition with similar disrespect.

Congratulations to Morningside. They were clearly the best team of the year and to Labrador who lifted from an average mid season to make the finals. I reckon though that the Panthers player payments were significant less than the Tigers, so the winning culture is clearly not about money. There's a couple of clubs bragging about who they are recruiting and how much they are spending for next year. Good on them, but lets hope they dot go broke or stuff up the competition with cheque book ambition. Want a sustainable competition and develop football in Queensland? Invest in it and develop it yourself, don't steal it from others.

Looking forward to 2015! No footy next week and I'm bored already!

Think you just have to accept the NEAFL is a compromised comp Yester. Follow the QAFL for community based footy or a QFA side. These comps are far far less affected by AFL level.

Disagree Lensen - no more than the 2's comp is compromised by the A grade and the Colts comp is by them both. As long as the qualifying rules are in place then this is the same Aust over for how guys get to play at finals time. Something like a 5-3 rule with State 18's games etc taken into account.
At NEAFL level, games are compromised, not just selection of teams, as higher grades make calls on a players game time etc.

All been said already, but as a family member of a Morningside player, VERY disappointing that family and friends couldn't go out onto the ground to congratulate the players and take photos of the presentation etc. Even the remainder of the playing squad had to argue with security to get out onto the ground. Then even worse, players ushered off the ground by security before they could go over to fence and catch up with family and friends - in our case parents and grandparents etc. Those who could stay had to walk around to other side of ground and wait until players came out of the rooms - still enjoyable but that initial moment post siren was gone by then...
Some of the most memorable moments and grand final photos can be in the first 5-10 mins post game...
There was an official photographer - where are the photos of each player receiving their medal for us to download, given that we couldn't get onto ground to take ourselves, and from a distance impossible to get an unobstructed view with others standing straight in front of the stage.
Still a great day for all Morningside players and supporters, but this aspect was a great disappointment to the volunteers and supporters of the club.

The guys I know who played for Morningside have photos up on Facebook that were taken by their girlfriends/parents out on the field after the game... I wasn't over that side of the field so I don't know what happened, did they let some fans on but not everyone?

Yeah, a bunch of guys jumped the fence, ignored security and ran on the field. They were able to get away with it for a few minutes before they started being escorted off. The whole time, there was announcements over the P.A "not to enter the playing arena". QAFL's biggest day and for the players who had just won a grand final, they were not given the chance to really celebrate the win cos the women's game had to start.

Same announcements were made during the women's game too, the same rules applied so I don't think it was "because the women's game had to start". They kicked off about 15-20 minutes after the scheduled start time anyway, so I don't think AFLQ were too worried about pushing the scheduling a bit out. AFLQ protecting the ground maybe? They were the last games of the year though, so I'm not sure why you would need to go to those extremes to keep it pristine when there won't be football on there for months after.
