Okay, let's trade for two more shorter guys who may be very good players.

Next year we will still be howling from the rooftops (like we have been since SOS & Sticks retired) about our inability or reluctance to find quality key position players.

Get the goddam spine right first & foremost and the rest will fall into place very easily around them.

It's incredibly ignorant to think that sorting out our spine is both the beginning and the end of the list management process.

It's also completely misguided to believe that teams who have won a premiership have done so because they have a 196cm player or two in their forward half. Talls are important, no doubt about it - but certainly not at the expense of elsewhere on the field.

Quite clearly sides at the top of the tree have immense levels of talent across the park and to be able to match it with them we need to place ourselves in a position where that becomes a reality. We are not in a position to turn down a player, let alone a young gun, because they aren't a key position player. In fact I'd be quite comfortable in saying that no club across the competition would turn down the chance to recruit Shiel or Tomlinson - let alone both - because they can't necessarily play as a key forward or defender.

You'd be fired quicker than you can say "Serhat Temel" if you were a list manager with that line of thinking. You don't turn away top shelf talent because they aren't at least 196cm in height. It doesn't matter how many times you choose to spruik that it should happen, it doesn't and for very good reason.

Let's rewind to the 2011 National Draft and hypothetically give ourselves pick 9, knowing what we do now. I guess you'd be in favour of overlooking Tomlinson for one of Todd Elton or Fraser McInnes because they are listed at 197cm.

The spine is important but not at the expense of other positions on the field. Remember how cocky Essendon supporters became when they had their spine 'sorted' with Pears, Hooker, Hurley & Gumbleton?

A whole lot of good that did them, right?

I guess they're down the shitter because Pears is only 191cm.

We have a number of areas on the field that needs to have the microscope put over it, I certainly agree with you there and have stated that many many times over the past 5-6 years. However, where we differ is the methodology used to cover it all.

The reason I say let's get the spine right is because we have struggled year on year to get it right and it is the one area that is holding us back from being able to genuinely challenge the top end of the ladder.

Having some big lugs in the forward 50m arc that our players can kick to in confidence knowing that they can and will take a pack mark is something we have been bereft of for years. It was embarrassing watching our guys bomb long to Eddie Betts in the goal square expecting him to continually outmark someone he was giving away 6-8inches on.

We didn't want to offload Kennedy to the Eagles but unfortunately had to in the Judd deal, he was an up & coming key forward who stands 196cm. Watching him do well in Perth is part frustrating & part 'good on him'.

There are always the smaller to mid-sized players up for trade or draft every year, they will never ever run out of supply plus we do have some decent options already at the club even though we could do with some more.

Don't misunderstand my view here, I'm not saying we should embargo the bringing in of more talented players, quite the opposite in fact, but let's plug the glaring deficiencies first and then work down the pecking order.

I wouldn't mind reading that Gibbs has re-signed in the next few days. Cmon Gibbsy put pen to paper. I think he will but the longer it drags on the worse it gets.

Spanger and Shoenmaker r way better than Waston IMO.
Were Spangher and Schoenmakers on Casboult and Robinson?

I liked Schoenmakers' clanger that missed Rioli and rebounded for Levi's hanger.

The Hawk was on Jamison when he kicked his first goal.

Lol do people realise how little 3 or 4 cms is, its less than the length of your finger

Strength and jump matter more for a kpf

Tomlinson is a gun

Correct. There are so many other factors that make a player that it isn't even funny.

Power.
Speed.
Strength.
Leap.
Kicking accuracy.
Length they can kick it.
Aggression.
Footy smarts.
Knowing how to use your body in a 1 on 1
Knowing when\ how to lead.
Contested marking ability.
The list just goes on

Would hardly say Jamo is tall enough to be a KPD but he is smart enough to play the role.

Not going to make a list of KPF who have been shorter than 194 because everyone else has covered it already. But gee wizz a few cm means bugger all.

How tall was SOS? FB of the century and he wasn't a giant.

SOS was 194cm & around 95kg.

It does all go around in eras & trends in the game. Remember, Big Nick was a dominant ruckman in his day but he was only 6ft.

When SOS was braining them at FB, he was against some of the best FF's in the game yet none of them were Casboult's size.

Sticks was the prototype CHF for many a year, at 196cm he was beacon in our forwardline.

Kreuzer to CHB.

Jamison isn't tall enough.

And where would your man Rowe play then ??

Besides, just imagine if we were in the luxury position of having Jammo pick up the opposition's third forward (eg. Gunston) instead of the No 1 or 2.

I realise that you are taking the piss but Malthouse has flirted with the idea of playing Kreuzer at CHF but we all know that he is a ruckman by trade and that is where he must be played.

Flip a coin between Bell and Robinson then.

I'm fine keeping both of them however if MM rates them.
I think we can keep them both.
Mi like adobo forward and Bell is more a pure mid but has been known to drift forward.

It's more of the McLean carrots etc type we need to cull in terms of too many of same type.
