New-look VFL Cats aim to build on success of the past
While the Cats in the past invited up to 70 players for the early stages of training, they have narrowed their focus to a small squad of about 40. Delisted St Kilda ruckman Jay Lever is training with the squad, along with Geelong Falcon Fraser Fort, who was overlooked in both drafts last month. But under VFL rules, due to the Geelong Falcons' alignment with Werribee, the Cats must pay the Tigers $3000 for any Falcons player they put on their final VFL list. Gun Colac midfielder James Linton is committed for next season in a bid to accelerate his draft currency after a breakout year at local level.

Yep, when a club embraces it's VFL side, more home games should be fixtured as curtain raisers.

Aside from our one home game curtain raiser v The Pups (once again taking on their rightful name 'Footscray'), Footscray will also play 2 of their home games at Skilled. Great to see The Pups embrace Simonds... Now to get the Doggies playing home games down the highway :)

*Just chatting to myself!... thanks Catgirl :p

Why the tag HTR? :) hehe

Oops!...
Cat(?) left a post, which I answered. Next day their post was deleted.
Conjured up the wrong Cat! "Me vewy sowwy" :(
Just so you don't appear to be going mad ( :D ), it was me! My posts vanish from time to time lol!

I mentioned it was a shame that only one true curtain raiser was scheduled in our vfl game against the doggies.

Don't mind the idea of playing the tigers vfl side at punt rd oval before we meet the seniors at the MCG though :thumbsu:

WTF?

Why do the "Geelong" Falcons align themselves with Werribbe while we are aligned with "Murray". Haven't we had Falcons trial with our VFL side? Don't quite grasp that. But as for the $$$ , I have no real problem with it. The bottom clubs need dollars.
Made me laugh.

Yes and some have trained at other clubs.
Why they're aligned to Werribee is odd,but that's the VFL or AFL for you.

We've had some Bushrangers play as part of the alignment scheme. I think it's a win-win for both: I doubt either our VFL or the recruiters lack for exposure to the ability of individual Falcons, but it'd be good for them and us to give some Bushrangers exposure at senior level. Probably also good for the VFL as a whole to align one of the stronger TAC sides with one of the smaller VFL ones. Credit to Werribee, they've churned out some good prospects the last couple of years.

Who have we got from Murray? I'm pretty sure that ruckman, Howe, is from the Bushrangers, but it seems like most of our VFL players (well the regular ones anyway) are from Geelong, or are from other VFL clubs. Still, I suppose we probably only need a handful of players out of the U18s every year to top our team up, as any more would probably find themselves back in their local side anyway.

No issue with the money; it's important to keep the traditional clubs afloat, particularly as more and more clubs are becoming stand-alones.

Sorry I wasn't clear - as part of the alignment VFL teams can play a current TAC player for a couple of games during the season as the 23d man. So Jake Stringer played for Bendigo against us in his draft year, for example. We've done it with a couple of Bushrangers though struggling to remember their names.

All good points , seeing bushies etc. But having to pay WTigers for FatherSons playing for the Falcons seems a little odd.

Oh...that's fair enough then, I suppose. Still seems a little weird that Falcons wouldn't play for our VFL team as top-up players, but not a big deal, I guess.

It's a little off-topic (hopefully not too far), but I've often wondered if more 'sure thing' AFL draft picks from Victoria shouldn't just bypass the TAC Cup and go straight to the VFL for their last year before being drafted. The absolute top talent in the league wouldn't be as high, but overall the standard would be better. And obviously the Tom Boyd types would be expected to get a lot more out of competing with grown men for a full season (like Jesse Hogan did) than by bullying smaller opponents. Would it rule them out of being selected for the U18 national championships?

I've always thought that that the SA and WA juniors have an inherent advantage, as they start out in the AFL, by getting to play in one of the top four senior leagues in the country, if they're physically up to it. But I'm not sure if there is actually anything to stop a Victorian U18 to play for, say, Port Melbourne instead of the Chargers...is there?
