Now it seems that finals are gone, and draft chatter has begun. I thought that this would be a good time/place for a thread to discuss what possible players will be available with our picks and who we should look at taking come November.

Haven't been such an avid watcher of the champs as previsous years due to lack of time, so if I've missed any of the big ones let me know/ feel free to do a bio for them!

But here are the names that might be around our pic that i can think of off the top of my head, should've done this when I've got more time but i'm too keen for this discussion (in June i know :( )(in no order)

  • Aaron Francis -SA Utility
  • Callum Ah Chee WA Rover/small forward (yes the relation of Brendon)
  • Ryan Clarke - Vic- Midfielder (personally reminds me a bit of a better skilled Luke Parker at the same age, bit more outside game too
  • Luke Partington - SA Midfielder
  • James Parsons - Vic Midfielder
  • Darcy Parish - Vic Country
  • Riley Bonner - SA Utility
  • Ryan Burton - SA Key Forward

To me we go the best avaialable midfielder, unless by some crazy reason Joshua Schache is there, but i doubt it -

Its the type of draft that i wouldn't mind having a pck in the 17-22 area tbh, maybe thats just de to the lack of games to prove the true pecking order yet, i am looking forward to watching the champs more now that ports hopes have been dashed

what we need with our first round pick imo, someone that can come in 2016 and play 14+ games as we hopefully propel back into the top half of the ladder

A top notch small forward that is a natural at crumbing and scoring goals is something we are missing and should be a priority. Strong contested mark optional but not necessary.

After that another strong big bodied midfielder that can get the ball and is a good kick. Strong contested mark preferable. Bit of a dream here but hey why not.

Should add Charlie Curnow in there as a tall utility who can play as a key forward. But utilities that don't quite have a set position can be risky.

For big forwards, Sam Weideman and Harry McKay. I prefer McKay of the two, but he's very very raw and doesn't throw his weight around enough yet. Weideman just seems a bit... average to me.

I'm all aboard the Ryan Burton train as a lot of my other posts would attest to. The main risk is he broke his leg, compound fracture, much like Jake Stringer, although he's taking longer to recover. 192cm / 90kg (listed on the North Adelaide website) mobile tall forward who is damaging on the lead, has good recovery, natural forward instincts and great skills. Dominated as an under-ager before suffering the leg break.

Another is Josh Schache, whose father Laurence played in the SANFL in 1988 and 1989 and then was drafted to the Brisbane Bears.

He kicked 8.4 for Vic Country against WA.

An eight-goal haul to highly touted key forward Josh Schache has helped Vic Country U18s record a dominant 105-point win over Western Australia at Medibank Stadium in Perth on Sunday.

The 199cm Murray Bushranger – the son of former Sturt, West Torrens, Brisbane and Woodville-West Torrens forward Laurence Schache - finished the match with 8.4 from his seven marks and 24 possessions in his side's 21.18 (144) to 5.9 (39) victory.

Some other draft prospects are also included in this page from the AFL website :

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-11-28/the-next-crop-who-are-2015s-top-draft-prospects

Some were already stated in the post above, Callum Mills is a Sydney academy player so likely to be off-limits, and the height of Josh Schache is given as 196 cm, not 199. 199 cm is probably correct as the AFL article is from November 2014 and the info at the top is from a recent article.

Previously I would not have entertained this possibility but things can change considerably on draft night. I don't really see Wingard coming to us as all that odd as GWS had an agenda and were always going to pick a certain type of player. Wines fell through about 4 or 5 gaps before we got him, although both Western Bulldogs players have proven worthy. Grundy was initially touted as a possible no. 1 till he fell to 18. We could have a top 10 pick this year which would put us into a place where we could catch any good players who might fall down the draft.

What bet Collingwood will appeal to the AFL for a "grandfather and grandson" rule as he is Murray Weideman's grandson but his father only played 28 games for Collingwood?

Is there any chance we'll package a player with either our 1st or 2nd pick and trade to move up a few spots in the order to potentially get a Schache or Ah Chee? Given we're currently looking at a pick in the 6 - 10 range and 25 range, is there anyone who would have the currency worth trading that would bump us to a 2 - 4 pick/2 top 20 picks?

I like this strategy as we all know that Schache is the player we're craving. But not sure if we have a player with that kind of currency worth packaging with a pick

I don't think any of the bottom 3 teams will trade a chance at Weitering/Schache/Francis.

And we definitely wouldn't need to trade up to get Ah Chee!

Fully agree. A natural forward who uses the ball well is one of the most obvious holes in the list right now.

I'm not sure how prolific he is around goals (because WA were smashed) but Kade Stewart looked good to me in the WA vs Vic metro game, which encouragingly was his first game back from injury, he seems superbly balanced and hit targets either foot.

He looked a lot better than Ah Chee that day.

2nd round pick + Andrew Moore/Aaron Young for a late first rounder?

Maybe even trade Mason Shaw if he wants out to return to Perth.
Couple of problems with that and the biggest one is that on current form they would struggle to break into the teams that end up getting late first round picks, and if their forms were to improve to those levels then we would want to keep both of them as they have different skilsets and both could easily play in the same team.

Wouldn't think shaw would warrant a late first rounder even if freo have pick 18/17. Moore + second round sounds more realistic.

I can realistically see us netting ah chee not only due to his brothers influence but our history with indigenous players and development. Could be in our draft range aswell. Though I am firmly on the burton bandwagon. Aguis is also one who hasn't been mentioned as much as the other prospects

Schache , weitering Francis and parish will go before our pick

So on a draft board roughly I would have

Partington
Clarke / burton
Curnow

Mathieson
Ah chee

2nd round
Any of the above if they slide
Tahana
Bonner
Collins
Tom cole

I like your taste. Only been to 2 colts games this season but off last season viewing these would be my two most wanted from WA for port. I am looking forward to getting time to have a read of draft and trading board to see how a few others have progressed.

Was staggered to recently learn Laurence had died at just 34 way back in 2002. Life sometimes.

Collins will go well before our second rounder, has Burton played league footy yet?

In the late 90's he'd come and train with my under 17's team when he was playing ammos with my local club. Was a great bloke and very generous with his time.

I really like Stewart in particular and reckon he'll be the pick of the bunch out of all the WA colts. Got a lot of Wingard about him - similar appearance, very slight and has knobbly knees, yet he is more than adept aerially and has a knack for rising to the occasion. Not as prolific as Chad was as a junior, but think there is a hell of a lot to like about him.

Ah Chee I have a couple of concerns on. Talent is pretty remarkable when let run free, but I just find he's been shut down a little too easily this year. Also suffers a little from the lack of a definitive role - kind of switches between deep forward and the midfield and I think it detracts from his game. Maybe stick him on a wing, or give him a full time responsibility and he'll flourish but at the moment they're trying to get him to do everything and it's not really working all that well.

For mine I think you take Ah Chee on the scope alone. I'm probably on my own there given apparently he has gone backward in his draft year(big warning signs) whereas I have only seen him in round 1. Can agree with the stuck between positions bit but seems a moral for HFF in the AFL. I'm never against high risk high reward picks. He was probably looking that way even last year unless he did a Petracca this year.

Considering we need a KPF who is ready to play now and that there are few KPF draftees who can step in to an AFL side in there first year, should we focus on trading for this position and draft a crumber/gun mid who we will get an earlier return on?

Obviously if Schache, Weitering, Francis and, maybe, Weideman are still around at our pick, then we should certainly look at them.

1: Lions - need KPPs - Schache or Weitering
2: GCS - probably take a mid considering their KPP stocks - likely bid on Mills/Hooper, which Sydney and GWS would match
3: Blues - need everything but can't see Schache or Weitering slipping past them. May look at a Weideman or Francis
4: St Kilda - as above
5: Demons - probably look at KPPs
6: Bombers - need mids - likely bid on Mills/Hooper if haven't already, which Sydney and GWS would match

On current form Schache, Weitering, Mills, Hooper, Parish and Francis should all be gone by our pick.

Vic Metro are shit at the moment - suggests draft will only have average depth. No fluke the 3 super drafts of 2001, 2006 and 2008 Vic Metro was a very dominate winner of the carnival.

Is this the first time Div 1 teams have played 6 games against other Div 1 teams and play everyone home and away?? I know previously Div 1 teams have played the other 3 teams and a couple of the Div 2 teams.
